    PhD Position - Well Clogging

The National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training (NCGRT) is looking for a PhD student to quantify clogging and its management during Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) operations. The position will be based in Adelaide, and enrolled through Flinders University.
Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) is the process of adding a water source such as treated wastewater to aquifers under controlled conditions for withdrawal at a later date. It may also be used as a barrier to prevent saltwater or other contaminants from entering the aquifer or to prevent or reverse of water table drawdown. Water can be recharged by a number of methods including infiltration via basins or galleries or by the use of injection wells. The single most important cause for operational failures of MAR systems is the decrease of permeability that results from clogging of pores in porous media. Causes of clogging include rearrangement and entrapment of particulates in pore throats, biofilm growth, geochemical reactions, gas entrainment, and combinations of these processes.
This PhD project aims to obtain fundamental insights into the underlying mechanisms that control clogging and to design diagnostics and operational procedures for broad application of MAR. The research will involve new theory developments and modelling studies, lab experiments, and field studies over a range of environmental conditions. The aim is to achieve a reliable characterisation of aquifer material, recharge water and native groundwater quality to predict and minimise the potential for clogging. This research is embedded in a larger project studying the impacts of injection of water into aquifers.
Applications are encouraged from Australian and international students. NCGRT scholarships may be offered as stand-alone scholarships or as supplements to APA or Endeavour Scholarships. NCGRT will supplement APA or Endeavour scholarships to a level of up to $39,375 per year. Stand-alone scholarships of up to $30,000 per year are also available.
For further information, please contact Saeed.Torkzaban@csiro.au. To apply, please send a cover letter, CV and the names and addresses of three referees to Anna Bonnes (anna.bonnes@flinders.edu.au).
Applications should be received by 27 April 2012.

    Institute for Applied Ecology

    PhD position - Paleotemperature Changes
    Across Eastern Australia

One of the challenges of using historical data sets to make future predictions is that of predicting outside the range of historical observations. It is generally assumed that instrumental records of climate and hydrology within the Murray Darling Basin are sufficient to enable assessment of the sensitivity of climate models, and thus gauge the accuracy of their projections for future rainfall and temperature. However, such an assumption has not been verified and is an important area of uncertainty.
Water temperature is one of the key drivers of biological communities; recent work in Canada is showing as little as a 1oC change in temperature can restructure the biological communities. Thus, developing an understanding of the plausible range of temperature changes is important for understanding ecological responses. Paleoclimate records are a key resource for understanding how global climate forcings such as CO2 concentrations are translated into regional climates, and for testing process-based climate models. Thus, accurate past climate records also allow us to both improve and constrain the accuracy of the future projections of climate models.
A PhD project is offered to investigate paleotemperature changes across eastern Australia since the last ice age from borehole thermometry. A raft of newly drilled boreholes and a new thermal conductivity scanning technique are expected to provide substantially improve temporal and spatial resolution of existing records. This information will improve our understanding of regional differences in past climate change, and the accuracy of future climate projections in Australia.
This PhD project is linked to studies using climate projections to predict the response of aquatic ecosystems to future conditions. The successful candidate will be supervised by staff from the Institute for Applied Ecology (http://appliedecology.edu.au/) at the University of Canberra
This project area would suit a candidate with demonstrated interest and qualifications in sedimentary petrology, basin and/or thermal modeling or paleoclimate studies. The selection criteria are:
    • Degree with first class Honours, or equivalent, in a suitable area of study
    • Qualifications in environmental science, geology, environmental chemistry
    • Demonstrated interest in sedimentary petrology, basin and/or thermal modeling or paleoclimate studies
    • Strong background in study design, and data analysis
    • Evidence of successful engagement in research activities
    • Well-developed verbal and written skills
    • A demonstrated ability to work in teams
    • An Australian driving licence
