    Temple University

The Department of Earth and Environmental Science at Temple University
seeks motivated students interested in pursing MS or PhD
    (Geosciences).
Environmental impacts of renewable energy: The research project
will evaluate opportunities to lower the environmental impacts (on land and
water resources) of large-scale solar development by providing foundational
data and analysis on cost reduction opportunities. A major option that will
be evaluated in the proposed research will be the colocation of solar
installations and agriculture. The research project, funded by the
Department of Energy, will identify crops suitable for colocation for
different agroclimatic regions, collect data on the energy inputs, water
and emissions from solar infrastructures and crops/biofuels, and conduct
comprehensive life cycle analyses to understand the tradeoffs and synergies
of colocation. The student will be advised by Sujith Ravi (Temple
University, PA https://sites.temple.edu/ravi/home/) and will work in close
collaboration with Jordan Macknick (National Renewable Energy Laboratory,
    CO).

Applicants for the PhD program must hold a Master degree in geology, earth
science or environmental engineering, with strong oral and written
communication skills. Experience or interest in quantitative data analysis
is preferred. The graduate students will be fully funded by research and
    teaching assistantships.
Temple University is a comprehensive public research university located in
Philadelphia, PA. Temple University is a dynamic urban university with
around 38,000 students and provides one of the nations most comprehensive
and diverse learning environments. Temple is ranked by the National Science
Foundation as among the top 100 universities in the country for research
expenditures and is classified as a very high research university (RU- VHR) by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. More information about our department is available at http://www.temple.edu/geology/ .

    Graduate Student

    University of Maryland, College Park

The Department of Environmental Science and Technology at University of Maryland invites applications for two PhD-level graduate research assistantships in the areas of sustainable water management and water reuse.
The project motivation: Population growth and ongoing climate variability have posed severe stress on limited sources of freshwater. As a result, water reuse and the exploration of nontraditional irrigation water sources (e.g., reclaimed and brackish waters) have become national priorities with regard to agricultural water security and the sustainable food production. While using nontraditional sources of water for irrigation has shown promising results, there are still significant knowledge gaps concerning the availability (quantity and quality) of nontraditional irrigation water sources. More research is needed in terms of identification and classification of nontraditional water sources, and making the data available via user friendly geospatial databases and decision support tools.
Qualifications: Prospective applicants should have BS/MS degrees in environmental science/engineering, natural resources management, biological resources engineering or a closely related field. Applicants are expected to have solid background in geospatial analysis and ArcGIS; along with demonstrated success in previous academic research. Experience in data analysis, hydrological models and decision support systems is very desirable.
Timeline: Preferred start date is Summer or Fall 2016.
Interested applicants should send an email, including their CV, unofficial transcripts, a writing sample, and contact information of three references as a single PDF file to Dr. Masoud Negahban-Azar (mnazar@umd.edu). The review process will begin immediately and will continue until the positions are filled.
