    smart metering
    50000403v959
    Promoter: Geert Deconinck

    details

Description: Smart metering will allow to transfer measurement data from electricity meters to a database, as well as to send commands to such meters. Smart metering is required to allow for advanced, distributed control applications with dispersed energy resources, as well as to enable smart grids. Commercial offerings only provide a first step towards advanced metering, as future-proof designs need to combine dependability and real-time requirements with a large bandwidth and low latency. The goal of this study is to analyse these requirements and design and evaluate well suited solutions.

    high-speed wireline communication circuits
    50000403v1289
    Promoter: Patrick Reynaert

    details

Description: Improvement in CMOS technology has allowed extremely high processing power and data-rates. This also requires improvement in I/O interface circuits for board and back-plane communication.

This research will investigate the use of high-frequency analog circuit techniques to develop high-speed (>100Gbps) and low power consumption wireline transceivers. Several high-speed wireline interfaces will be developed in CMOS and measured under real-life conditions.

    Antenna-PA and Antenna-LNA co-design
    50000403v1290
    Promoter: Patrick Reynaert

    details

Description: Designing integrated circuits at very high frequencies (>200GHz) has recently become possible thanks to the improvement in IC technology speed. The physical dimensions of an antenna at these frequencies become small enough to integrate the antenna with the circuitry. This allows the co-design of the PA and the antenna, as well as the LNA and the antenna. Such co-design should bring another degree of freedom in the PA/LNA design, leading to an improved performance.

This research will evaluate and optimize the design of antennas on Silicon, specifically for frequencies above 200GHz. Furthermore, the co-design of the antenna with the analog front-end circuitry will be investigated for a CMOS technology.

Open Position :: Postdoc in Machine Learning for Computational Biology

The genetics lab of Prof. Sir Bruce Ponder and the computational biology lab
of Dr. Florian Markowetz at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Research
Institute offer a joint position for a postdoctoral researcher interested in
statistical and computational approaches to systems genetics in cancer.

The recent whole-genome scan for breast cancer [1] has identified five novel
susceptibility loci. In follow-up work the strongest locus has been narrowed
down to two SNPs in the intronic region of the FGFR2 gene [2]. However, a
detailed understanding of the disease mechanism is still missing. This
project will use a systems biology approach to elucidate the functional
roles of FGFR2 and other cancer susceptibility genes. We will integrate
diverse genomic data sources (including gene expression, SNPs, copy number
variants and others) using statistical network methods [3]. The resulting
networks will be used to identify key drivers of disease and their
functional mechanisms. The methods developed in breast cancer will also be
applied to other cancer types, e.g. lung cancer.

The position bridges between an experimental and a computational lab and is
ideal if you are interested in data analysis and method development
motivated by close collaborations with experimentalists.

The ideal applicant has a strong background in data analysis and statistical
modelling (including knowledge of R or Matlab). Experience in medical or
    biological research is desireable.

If you are highly motivated to work in an interdisciplinary and very
collaborative environment at an internationally recognized research
institute, apply by sending your CV to Florian Markowetz at
    florian.markowetz @ cancer.org.uk.

PhD position within the area of Ultrafast and THz Optics at the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, Norway. IME-052-2009. (publisert 26.8 2009, sist endret 27.8 2009)
NTNUPhD position within the area of Ultrafast and THz Optics at the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, Norway. IME-052-2009. (publisert 26.8 2009, sist endret 27.8 2009) (Fjernes fra Innsida 11.9 2009)
Lagt inn av: Anne Kristin Bratseth

    Melding til: IME Fakultetsadministrasjon
    Nettopp: Ledige stillinger

The position involves both theoretical and experimental work in the field of femtosecond and THz nonlinear pulse propagation in waveguides and in water.

The theoretical work takes advantage of finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations of the Maxwell-Bloch equations for multi-level material systems and Fourier methods for solving the nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

The experimental work uses femtosecond solid state lasers for characterization of femtosecond and THz pulses propagating through pure water and different types of waveguides using frequency-resolved optical gating methods.

Depending on the interests of the candidate the position can be tailored more towards either theory or experiment. The purpose of this project is to understand how to shape pulses in amplitude and phase such that they absorb and scatter less than traditional pulses when propagating through dielectric materials. The work relates to communications and imaging for medical and remote sensing applications.
