MID-FREQUENCY - CAE Methodologies for Mid-Frequency Analysis in Vibration and Acoustics

    50000403v1346
    Promoter: Bert Pluymers

    details
Description: EU FP7 Marie Curie Fellowship:

Effective and efficient vibration and acoustic analysis, modelling and design methods are required to produce world-leading products with good noise and vibration performance. Noise and vibration levels must remain within safe limits, there are issues regarding human comfort and a need for robust, optimal, efficient designs. There is also an increasing trend towards virtual design and prototyping, to reduce costs and development times. For all these reasons good analysis and modeling tools are essential.

Ideally such tools would be applicable over the whole frequency range of interest, which is the audio-frequency range for automotive and aerospace structures, for instance. In practice, specific methods are applicable in a limited frequency region. Finite element analysis (FEA) is a “low frequency” method which is both well developed and well established. At “high frequencies” statistical energy analysis (SEA) is a valuable, but less well-established, tool. There is however a “mid-frequency” gap in our modelling capabilities: too high for FEA, too low for SEA. This is important, since it strongly affects product performance and competitiveness, and forms the target for this ITN. Substantial challenges exist in this “mid-frequency” range. New analysis approaches are essential to produce world-leading products.

This ITN brings together academic and industrial beneficiaries who will together host researchers, drawing together skills and expertise in a range of different technical approaches. The industrial beneficiaries bring specific applications, behind which are generic difficulties associated with the mid-frequency region. The academic beneficiaries bring a diverse range of potential research approaches and the capability of research training, provision of courses and dissemination to the wider community. Together they can develop and promote research, knowledge and application of mid-frequency vibration and acoustics analysis techniques within EU industry.

Determine problem characteristics relevant for choosing the appropriate solution technique for a real-life problem.

    50000403v1767

    Promoter: Dirk Cattrysse, Pieter Vansteenwegen

    details
Description: Three types of solution strategies can be distinguished in the operations research field: exact methods, heuristics and metaheuristics. With exact methods an optimal solution is guaranteed. Heuristics are more straightforward and much faster methods capable of solving big and complex problems. However, the solution quality is significantly reduced. Metaheuristics are the most recent solution strategy. Metaheuristics apply a meta-strategy to considerably improve the quality of the results of one or more simple heuristics. The most important metaheuristics are (Glover & Kochenberger, 2003) tabu search, iterated local search, guided local search, genetic and evolutionary algorithms, ant colony optimisation and variable neighbourhood search. Metaheuristics are capable of reaching a high quality solution within reasonable calculation time.

When a new type of problem comes up, a researcher will often try to solve this problem with the solution strategy he is familiar with. At this moment, not enough scientific insight is developed about strong and weak points of algorithms to make a well-considered choice for a certain procedure. Sometimes the quality of (specific implementations of) algorithms is compared for a given problem, but this comparison is almost always based on the obtained results and not on the question why one method obtained better results than the other method.

The goal of this project is to determine problem characteristics relevant in the choice of a well performing solution strategy. When a new problem arises, in logistics or production, it will be possible to select the most promising technique for this new problem, based on its characteristics. More specifically, this means that when a new problem has characteristic A (or B), algorithm X (or Y) will be a proper framework to start with. It is not the idea to determine which algorithm is “somewhat better”, but to determine which algorithm is the most promising one for a class of problems with a specific characteristic.

Since the research field of metaheuristics and optimisation problems is quite large, we limit this project to the following optimisation problems and their variants:
    - the orienteering problem,
    - the travelling salesperson problem,
    - the knapsack problem.
We limit this research to the following metaheuristics:
    - tabu search,
    - variable neighbourhood search,
    - guided local search,
    - ant colony optimisation.

Key words: metaheuristics - optimization techniques - operations research

The potential role of the gas distribution network (and gas supplies) in the framework of smart grids for urban areas

    50000403v1654

    Promoter: William Dhaeseleer

    details
Description: Smartgrids are considered to be the next step in the efficient use and distribution of energy (mainly electricity). This project looks at the role of the gas distribution network in the framework of smart grids. What are the effects of smart metering on gas consumption? What is the impact of distributed generation (chp) on the gas grid? What investments are required? An intelligent approach to (electricity) smart grids requires that these questions are dealt with.

Efficient parallel optimization algorithms for DNS and LES of turbulent mixing

    50000403v1833

    Promoter: Johan Meyers

    details
Description: OPTEC (K.U.Leuven Optimization in Engineering Center), and the department of Mechanical Engineering (division TME) offer a grant for candidates who want to pursue a PhD in engineering, and gain teaching experience as a member of the didactic team of the mechanical engineering department.

The candidate aims at a PhD in engineering with research topic: efficient parallel optimization algorithms for transient three-dimensional turbulent-flow simulations (DNS and LES) with applications towards turbulent mixing.

The PhD research focuses on the development of efficient optimization algorithms for parallel computing of complex three-dimensional transient flow simulations, with applications oriented towards turbulent mixing in the presence of passive scalars with and without buoyancy effects. For the flow simulations direct numerical simulations (DNS) and large-eddy simulations (LES) are considered. First of all, the use of algorithms such as BFGS, multiple shooting, multigrid, and various continuation methods are elaborated for large-scale flow optimization on high-performance computing systems. Next to that, the research will concentrate on algorithms which may improve on local optima found using gradient-based optimization techniques (e.g. using a combination with simulated annealing). Finally, the effect of uncertainty, and the presence of background turbulence, on optimization algorithms is investigated.

The research is funded by OPTEC (an excellence center on optimization at K.U.Leuven - www.kuleuven.be/optec/), and is well integrated in OPTEC's research structure, in particular in Working Group 6 on PDE-constrained optimization. The research further closely relates to the fluid-mechanics research at the Mechanical Engineering Department (supervised by Prof. J. Meyers), and the algorithmic research on PDE-optimization at the Computer Science Department (Prof. S. Vandewalle).

    Requirements and competencies:

-Master Degree in engineering, applied physics or applied mathematics
-basic knowledge in fluid mechanics and CFD
-good programming skills: knowledge of Fortran, C++
-good English redaction skills for scientific reporting
-good command of the English language in general

    Salary and benefits:
The phd grant is for four years. The monthly remuneration is about 1730 € after taxes, social security included.

    Application deadline: August 1, 2010
Decision: when a suitable candidate applies
    Earliest starting date:July 1, 2010

    Research environment:

The Mechanical Engineering department of the K.U.Leuven has an excellent research track in both fluid mechanics in general
and turbulent flow optimization. The K.U.Leuven, situated in Leuven near Brussels, is one of the oldest universities in Europe. Its rich history
and patrimony provides an inspiring research environment, and this is combined with very high standard accommodation. For its computational research,
the K.U.Leuven has a state-of-the-art cluster, 20 TFlops system with 1500 Intel Xeon cores, which is part of the Flemish Super Computing Center.

The role of an optimal mix of distributed generation in the context of future smart grids in urban areas

    50000403v1736

    Promoter: William Dhaeseleer

    details
Description: Future energy-provision systems will be characterized by both large centralized and small decentralized systems, for the production of end-energy carriers such as electricity, heat and cold. The integration of the distributed production means remains a challenge, especially the timely delivery of the right energy carrier, and this in the most efficient way. Clearly, an optimal distributed generation portfolio will depend on the types of customers' energy services desired and on the distribution grids available and on the degree of controllability of the whole system. Furthermore, the degree of intelligence of the so-called smart grids will be important in this respect. The emphasis of this project will be on the thermal side, the simultaneous production of electricity and the interaction with the gas grid and heat and cold distribution networks.
