Post-Doc Position: Computational Scientist in Computational Fluid Dynamics and HPC
Science and Technology Facilities Council, UK
    Deadline: Friday, August 07, 2015

    About The Role
We currently have a vacancy for a talented post-doctoral researcher to become a Knowledge Transfer Partnership Associate. This project is supported through Innovate UK and has a strong industrial research focus and the Associate will be working closely with Waters, a world-leading developer of mass spectrometry instrumentation, and the Computational Engineering Group at Daresbury Laboratory. The work will involve advanced software development combining computational fluid dynamics and high performance computing. Ideally the person
will be familiar with kinetic theory and rarefied gas dynamics and knowledge of direct simulation Monte Carlo methods would be an advantage. The successful candidate will primarily be based at Waters (Wilmslow) with periods spent at Daresbury Laboratory developing and implementing software on massively parallel computers. The work will initially take place within a 3-year fixed-term project and the Associate will lead the development of an in-house capability to simulate rarefied multi-scale flow and ion/droplet transport in a mass-spectrometry device to enhance the understanding of the multi-physics processes in the different stages of the device.

    About You
You must hold, or be about to finish, a Doctorate degree (or equivalent). Candidates with a good knowledge of fluid dynamics, kinetic theory, or droplet transport are welcome to apply and the post may be particularly suitable to researchers with appropriate experience in cognate fields such as Physics, Numerical Analysis, Applied Mathematics or Mechanical Engineering.

Ability to work on their own initiative and within a team on a range of projects will be expected.

NEW PhD and MEng Positions on Liquid Repellent Surface Research

Memorial University of Newfoundland, NL, Canada
For more information please see the link below
    http://www.engr.mun.ca/~xduan

PhD and Master Student Positions to Develop Liquid Repellent Surface in Harsh Marine Environments
The objective of this project is to use low cost fabrication (mechanical, chemical, or electrochemical) methods to develop super-hydrophobic and icephobic surfaces on engineering metals (high grade carbon steel, aluminum) that are durable in harsh marine environments (cold temperature, high salinity, repeated friction, cyclic icing and melting).
Detailed electrochemical and thermal hydraulic experiments will be conducted on the developed surfaces to test their corrosion and icing behaviors. Microscale fluid dynamics and heat transfer between liquid droplets and the surfaces will be investigated both experimentally and numerically.
We look for someone with strong background in fluid mechanics and heat transfer, especially with good understandings of liquid-metal interface, corrosion or icing phenomena. Candidates from mechanical, physics or chemical disciplines are welcomed.

PhD Studentship: Simulation and analysis of interacting flows
    University of Southampton, UK
    Deadline: Monday, August 31, 2015

Internal flows, for example in gas turbine blade passages, contain interacting flow features, including separation, laminar and turbulent boundary layers, wake flows, end-wall effects and tip leakage flows that are a challenge for traditional computational fluid dynamics approaches. Recent advances in computer performance and algorithms mean that such flows are now amenable to direct numerical simulation (DNS), providing reference solutions that allow the flow physics to be investigated in detail. In addition, the performance of less computationally demanding approaches can be validated against the results of DNS. The aim of the present project is to extend the capabilities of DNS and then to analyse in detail the mechanisms of loss generation and how these can be reduced by careful attention to details of the flow path.

Post-Doc Position: CFD simulation of the performance of catch basin inserts for storm water treatment
Università degli Studi di Genova, Italy
    Deadline: 24 Aug 2015

Catch basin inserts for storm water treatment are an alternative to traditional treatment plants located at the outlet of urban drainage systems. Among the advantages the possibility of handling reduced flow rates and treating specific pollutants that are typical of the urban wash-off. The limited size of such systems requires specific technical solutions to facilitate the flow of the initial runoff portion towards the filtering device and the separation (bypass) of the eventual flow. This project aims at performing CFD simulations of the performance of a specific catch basin insert device with the objective to optimize its dimensions and shape as a function of the different physical-chemical characteristics of the storm water runoff.
