PhD Fellowship: Salts, Advanced development of inorganic salt mixtures and nano-fluids as thermal energy storage (TES) materials for concentrated solar power (CSP) application
    CIC ENERGIGUNE, Spain
The selection process ends once a candidate is selected

    Ph.D project description
The development of thermal energy storage (TES) systems has become an interesting way to upgrade the concentrated solar power (CSP) technologies. TES systems help to extend the power generation during low irradiance periods or at night allowing the decoupling of the solar radiation and electricity production times. Currently, the TES technologies are mainly based on sensible heat storage in the double tank concept using inorganic salts as storage media. These inorganic salts are not only the most used materials for sensible heat storage (Solar Slat) in commercial CSP plants but also the most promising materials for latent heat storage applications. Enhancing their thermophysical properties can largely improve the thermodynamic cycle efficiency of the TES system and consequently achieving a significant electricity cost reduction.
The aim of this Ph.D work is to develop new inorganic salt mixtures with low melting, high decomposition temperature and improved thermophysical properties such as specific heat, latent heat and thermal conductivity, etc.

Postdoc Position in Mesoscopic Modeling of Dendritic Solidification
    Institut Jean Lamour, France
    Deadline: 28 Sep 2015

    THE PROJECT
You will be working on the development of a novel model that will enable us to study the solidification of a large population of dendritic grains in metal alloys. This new mesoscopic approach overcomes the limitations of established microscopic phase-field methods. It can be applied at larger scales and can include the flow of the liquid phase. The physics includes convective and diffusive transport of heat and chemical species, fluid flow, liquid-solid phase change in multicomponent mixtures, and the growth kinetics of the dendrite tips. You will build upon the existing first version of the model, which we implemented as a new in-house OpenFOAM® solver—CrystalFOAM. You will perform research on theoretical and numerical aspects, develop applications and interact with experimental researchers. While focusing on fundamental research, the project has an important impact on our applied research, where we collaborate with several industrial partners.

    DURATION

Postdoctoral Research Assistant: Mathematical Modelling of the Atmosphere to Ocean Momentum Transfer by Sea Ice
    University of Reading, United Kingdom
    Deadline: 07 Sep 2015

    Job description
The reduction of the Arctic sea ice cover is a prominent indication of climate change and has excited considerable scientific and general interest. The inability of climate models to adequately represent the rate of Arctic sea ice loss or the small increase in Southern Ocean sea ice has stimulated interest in the physical basis of the model representation of sea ice and ocean processes in the polar regions.
This project will focus on the atmosphere to sea ice to ocean momentum transfer in the Arctic and Southern Oceans. The model of air-sea ice and sea ice-ocean drag forces will be examined and modified to account for form drag and stability using theory and observations. The representation of these drag laws will be explored in climate sea ice models, coupled sea ice-ocean models, and atmosphere-sea ice-ocean models. The simulations will be compared to observations and analysed for their implications.
The successful applicant will have aptitude for, and previous experience of, numerical modelling of physical environmental systems and will join a research team investigating related aspects of the polar oceans.

    Damage monitoring using vibroacoustic analysis
    KU Leuven, Belgium
Apply no later than: October 11, 2015

    Project
Complex mechanical systems, such as aircraft, surfaceship, submarines, wind turbines and power plants often have widely varying usage patterns. Due to their cost and importance, their usage is generally reported by measuring quantities such as flight hours for aircraft, years for bridges and roads and number of starts for diesel engines. As faults and anomalies are experienced over time, premature replacements of parts and periodic maintenance become more frequent to assure safety of the most heavily used structures. A solution to this problem is the online condition monitoring and failure diagnosis/prognosis by analyzing the vibroacoustic signature of the complex mechanical structure which contains pivotal information about the state of the machinery and its critical structural components.
The PhD research will focus on the development and application of methodologies in order to perform damage identification and monitoring in mechanical systems. The main objectives will be the development of novel and effective methods and techniques for feature extraction, feature selection and feature quality assessment in order to estimate online the degradation of the mechanical structure under steady and variable operating conditions. The uncertainty propagation in the degradation process will be investigated ina probabilistic framework. Different type of sensors will be used and as trategy allowing the identification of the best positions and the number of sensors to be mounted will be developed. The performance and the effectiveness of the damage diagnostic techniques will be evaluated, demonstrated and validated through numerical simulation and experimental studies.

    Profile
We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic, communicative and eager to learn researcher with a Master of Science in Engineering(preferably in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering). The candidate should have a strong background and interest in signal processing, measurements and particularly in vibroacoustic condition monitoring/fault detection/diagnosis in complex mechanical systems

You can apply for this job no later than October 11, 2015 via the online application tool

PhD Studentship: High-fidelity simulations of high-pressure turbines
    University of Melbourne, Australia
    Deadline: Monday, August 31, 2015

In the current project, we will conduct high-fidelity simulations of HPT flows using a well-established high-performance DNS/LES code. The data resulting from the massively parallel simulations will be used in order to shed light on the detailed loss and heat transfer mechanisms and to assess current modelling strategies, and if possible, improve those.

You should have a first-class Honours degree or international equivalent in Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related subject. Prior experience with conducting large-scale parallel simulations and with turbomachinery flows is desirable but not required.

PhD Studentship: High-accuracy simulations of high Re and complex-geometry flows
    University of Melbourne, Australia
    Deadline: Monday, August 31, 2015

The aim of this project is to continue developing a RANS/LES framework that relies on applying gene-expression programming algorithms to high-fidelity experimental or numerical data. Preliminary work on simple canonical flow configurations has shown good performance. However, it is now of key importance to adapt and refine the approach for considerably more complex flow configurations and for higher Reynolds numbers
