PhD Vacancy: Controlling Polymorphism with Microfluidics-Engineered Soft Materials
    Delft University of Technology, Netherlands
    Closing date: 01-10-2015

    Job description
The aim of this position is to develop novel materials capable of controlling a fundamental physiochemical phenomenon including polymorphism and crystallisation. Soft materials (complex fluids) such as colloids, hydrogels, and (nano)emulsions can be engineered to function beyond the capabilities of standard process engineering equipment. Evoking fundamental concepts in soft materials, fluid mechanics and recently developed microfluidic techniques, we will design soft materials that carry the widely used physiochemical processes beyond the state of the art.
Within this project, the IRS group will focus on developing not only the soft material capable of controlling the desired process but also the processes to synthesise the soft material at the desired industrial scale.

    Requirements
Excellent MSc in the area of mechnical engineering, chemical enginering, physics, or chemistry, preferably with exposure to crystallisation, fluid mechanics (particularly microfluidics) or soft materials
Strong interest in scientific research on the interface between physics, chemistry and chemical engineering
    Fluency in English

    Information and application
For more information about this position, please contact H. B. Eral, phone: +31 (0)15-2786678, e-mail: h.b.eral@tudelft.nl. To apply, please e-mail a detailed CV, references, publication list and abstract of your MSc thesis along with a letter of application by 1 October 2015 to Hilma Bleeker, application-3mE@tudelft.nl.

PhD Student Mechanics of Penetration of High-Performance Composites
    Eindhoven University of Technology, Netherlands
    Deadline: 31 Aug 2015

UHMWPE composites are highly anisotropic materials (ratio of tensile to shear strengths on the order of 1000) with complex multi-scale micro-structures that interact across their length scales. This has made the development of a robust understanding for these materials elusive. We thus aim to develop multi-scale models that can then be translated to robust constitutive models for these composites with applicability to model penetration in both the low and high velocity regimes. Specifically the objectives will include:
Developing a detailed finite element model of the composite at the level of individual fibers, accounting for the composite’s microstructure and its dominant failure mechanisms in an explicit fashion.
Studying the response of the detailed model under impact conditions in order to establish the dominant failure mechanisms as a function of the parameters of the system.
Translating the key physical insights gained from the detailed model into a simpler, homogeneous continuum damage model, which is to be implemented in a commercial finite element code.
Validating the continuum model against experimental data from the literature.

    Tasks
    Study the relevant literature.
Formulate three-dimensional constitutive models at both scales considered, taking into account the large strains and extreme degree of anisotropy of the material, as well as relevant failure mechanisms.
Develop the finite element discretization of the models and implement them in a nonlinear finite element code.
Run large-scale simulations and interpret results.
Report results in journal publications and PhD thesis.
Assist industrial partners of the project in adopting the code developed.

PhD Thesis: Numerical and experimental methods development for the investigation of mechanical stress and fails induced in advanced microelectronic devices
    STMicroelectronics, France
    Deadline: 30 Sep 2015

The proposed thesis aims to define and develop dedicated methodologies to prevent and to forecast these mechanical fails. Both experimental and numerical investigations will be performed. Experimentally, various methods and tools will be developed and investigated: improvement of crack detector structures, assessment of methods to measure the fracture toughness of a complex structure and use of in-situ stress sensors. Numerically, the aim is to provide finite element models enabling to get a deeper understanding of the phenomena involved and to correlate simulation with experiments. The final objective is to be able to determine the failure hazard of a given product and forecast its lifespan priori to any true manufacturing.
