PhD Position in Computational Multiscale Modelling of Bone Fracture Healing Mechanobiology

The aim of the research is to develop and formalise a theoretical foundation for modelling the mechanobiology of biological systems at the molecular, cellular, and organ level with a first implementation elucidating the mechanobiological regulation of bone fracture healing. A possible approach envisioned is to propose a new kind of computing machine similar to or based on Cellular Automata that mimics biological information processing for each of these different scales, links them together and is capable of integrating established computational models and numerical methods. This is a formidable challenge in terms of understanding and synthesising current knowledge of mechanobiological functioning across scales and based on this developing and formalising appropriate computing machines. The motivation is to make more use of the ever growing amount of data available from biomedical measurements to better understand complex mechanobiological mechanisms and ultimately improve pre-clinical testing and clinical diagnosis and prognosis. Experimental and clinical data including time-lapse in vivo high-resolution CT image data and biomarker measurements of patients with fractures will be available to verify the newly developed multiscale modelling theory in its first application. The purpose of this application is to unravel the local mechanoregulation of bone fracture healing in healthy, aged and osteoporotic humans guiding the development of future therapies, which is particularly difficult and needed in the latter two cases.
The successful candidate holds or will soon receive a master’s degree in Computational Science and Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or Applied Mathematics, preferably with some background in computational modelling. It is essential that the candidate is willing and motivated to work on the foundations of biological multiscale modelling and theory. Additionally, excellent communication skills in English (oral and written) are required.
For further information please contact Dr. Patrik Christen at patrik.christen@hest.ethz.ch (no application documents) or visit our group website www.bone.ethz.ch.
We are looking forward to receive your online application. It should include a motivation letter, CV, university transcripts and names and contact details of two references. Please send
it to: ETH Zurich, Human Resources, Mrs. Nadja Lang, CH-8092 Zurich.

PhD or PostDoc Position: 3D Printing of Biomaterials for Tissue Engineering Applications
    KU Leuven, Belgium
    Deadline: September 15, 2015

    Project
Additive Manufacturing (AM) is currently regarded as the manufacturing technology of the future, being able to produce complex 3D objects directly from a digital model and addressing optimized use of resources and material, reduced time to market, and possibilities for part-to-part customization. The main objective of this project is to develop a technological platform for the 3D printing of biomaterials, such as hydrogel formulations, for tissue engineering applications. Within the category of direct writing technologies, flow (extrusion) and droplet based techniques will be compared. To be able to have an efficient use of expensive biomaterials, hardware changes may need to be made to existing 3D printing platforms. Special care will also be taken to extend temperature control throughout the process flow for the optimal use of temperature-sensitive biomatierials. The project will also involve the characterization of the mechanical and morphological properties of the printed scaffolds. Finally, biological assays, such as culturing of cells and evaluating cell attachment, viability, and proliferation, will be performed to test the biocompatibility of the materials after processing. The main activities of the project will focus on the deliverables of a national project in collaboration with the University Hospital of Antwerp to develop a bio-artificial cornea.

    Profile
We are looking for an enthusiastic, creative and independent Ph.D. student researcher (4 year position) with:
i* a master's degree in mechanical engineering, materials engineering, biomedical engineering, engineering technology, or a related domain. * good communication skills (oral and written) in English. * a collaborative attitude and interest in multidisciplinary research. * experience with additive manufacturing/3D printing and/or biomaterials development and characterization.

We will also consider candidates at the postdoctoral level for a 2 year position who meets the above criteria and further has a PhD in mechanical engineering, materials engineering, biomedical engineering, engineering technology, or a related domain and specific expertise in the field of additive manufacturing/3D printing for biomedical applications.

PhD Vacancy: Durability of Composite-to-Metal Bonded Joints
    Delft University of Technology, Netherlands
    Deadline: 1/10/2015

    Job description
The PhD student will be working on the durability of composite-to-metal bonded joints under extreme environmental conditions.
The aim of the research is to investigate the mechanical degradation phenomena taking place due to aging and to accurately predict the long-term performance of composite-to-steel adhesively-bonded joints.
The research will be carried out in cooperation with industrial partners of the offshore and shipbuilding industries. The increasing demand for higher load capacity in heavily loaded structures, such as ships, offshore constructions and bridges, opens a generous opportunity for the next generation of heavily loaded hybrid structures. The main challenge addressed by the project is how to join composites to metals in a durable and reliable way, so that they can resist extreme environmental conditions.
The candidate will collaborate with another PhD student who will focus on the chemical degradation phenomena.

    Requirements
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated candidate with:
    • A Master degree (or the equivalent) in Mechanical/Civil/Aerospace Engineering and a background in structures and/or materials. • Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English • Demonstrable affinity for industry-related research.
