PhD Position: Process Simulation of Laser Assisted Additive Manufacturing
    University of Twente (UT), Netherlands
    Deadline: 15 Sep 2015

Residual stresses and distortions can be predicted using numerical simulations but the calculation time for a straightforward finite element calculation is enormous, even for the simplest test geometries. The challenge in this project is to develop reliable and computationally tractable process models that can predict distortions and residual stresses in full scale components.
This project, which goes by the acronym TopAM, is a collaboration between University of Twente (UT), TU Delft and industrial research institutes TNO and NLR. You will develop efficient simulation methods for the prediction of residual stresses and product geometry in laser assisted additive manufacturing. A second PhD student at TU Delft will use your methods as a basis for
topological optimization of parts manufactured by AM.

You will be part of the Mechanics of Solids, Surfaces and Systems (MS3) department, a team of approximately 75 academics and PhD’s which deal with the topics solid mechanics, tribology, production and system engineering. Prof. van den Boogaard holds the chair of Nonlinear Solid Mechanics within MS3.

PhD scholarship in Design and Modelling of Concentrated Solar Power Plants focusing on Dynamic Performances
    TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF DENMARK
    Deadline: 6 September 2015

Due to the intermittent nature of solar radiation it is of crucial importance that concentrated solar power plants have excellent transient performances in order to maximize the profit of the plants. That is, the plants should be able to adapt quickly to sudden changes in solar radiation or load demand, and have highly flexible start-up and shut-down responses

In the PhD project, new steam generator designs based on a design derived by Aalborg CSP will be investigated, targeting faster ramp rates and reduced start-up and shut-down times. Detailed numerical models will be derived and validated using data provided by manufacturers. By the use of these models, improved designs and control strategies will be derived. Moreover, detailed thermo-economic analyses will be conducted combining the solar field, the power block and the storage systems in order to develop novel control strategies to maximize the revenue, thereby reducing the overall cost of electricity production

    Qualifications
Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering
Strong skills and a great interest in engineering thermodynamics are essential. Previous experience with numerical simulation work and programming is a great advantage. Moreover, previous experiences with thermodynamic modelling of concentrated solar power plants and dynamic performance modelling are considered additional qualifications. Applicants must have great analytical skills and the ability to work independently towards the research goals. Furthermore, fluency in speaking, reading and writing English is important

PhD Studentship: Recovery of inclusion aggregates in metallurgical processes,i
role of the local turbulence at the free surface and at the walls
    Université de Lorraine, France
    Deadline: Thursday, December 31, 2015

The behavior of inclusions in metallurgical processes has already been studied with a good level of details by people involved in this project, essentially via numerical simulations at the process scale where computational fluid dynamics (CFD) were coupled with population balances. At such a scale, inclusion transport and agglomeration phenomena have to be modeled, which circumscribes the conclusions drawn from such simulations to the domain of accuracy of the underlying models. However, the dynamics and interactions of aggregates in the vicinity of free surfaces and walls are difficult to capture properly in models, due to the impact of aggregate morphologies and to the potential interactions with small turbulent length scales. This project aims at specifically studying the deposition and capture of metallurgical inclusion aggregates on walls and free surfaces, in conditions commonly found in metallurgical processes. Such mesoscopic simulations, in which particles and flow at particle scale are fully resolved, will provide a better understanding and identification of the significant deposition and capture mechanisms, depending on the morphology physic-chemical properties of the inclusions. In a second time, this knowledge will serve to determine statistical macroscopic capture models, specific to the case of the inclusions in metallurgical processes, that can be used in larger scale simulations, as a way to improve the control of inclusion recovery, and as a consequence inclusion cleanliness, in industrial processes.

For this work, the simulations will be performed using a computation software that is being developed in the hosting team and that already serves to simulate primary inclusion interaction and aggregation in a liquid metal. It is based on a lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) to solve the flow dynamics (CFD) and on a discrete element method (DEM) to track solid inclusions. The coupling between the two methods uses immersed boundaries (IBM) in order to fully resolve the geometry of the considered inclusions.

    Desired applicant profile
Applicants to this PhD position must have an education of good quality in fluid mechanics and must be interested in numerical simulations. General knowledge of numerical methods and common simulation techniques will be very appreciated but no former experience with lattice Boltzmann or discrete element methods is required.
This work to be done falls in a long term research theme of the Process Metallurgy team that the applicant would join. However, mesoscopic simulations at inclusion scale is a recent development. Applicants must thus prove curious, eager to learn new simulation tools, and able to draw physical interpretations from simulation results based on their knowledge in fluid mechanics. They must also be comfortable with mathematical modeling since models will have to be written in statistically consistent form to be suitable for integration in a population balance equation.
