PhD Position Process Simulation of Laser Assisted Additive Manufacturing
    University of Twente, Netherlands
    Deadline: September 15, 2015

Residual stresses and distortions can be predicted using numerical simulations but the calculation time for a straightforward finite element calculation is enormous, even for the simplest test geometries. The challenge in this project is to develop reliable and computationally tractable process models that can predict distortions and residual stresses in full scale components. This project, which goes by the acronym TopAM, is a collaboration between University of Twente (UT), TU Delft and industrial research institutes TNO and NLR. You will develop efficient simulation methods for the prediction of residual stresses and product geometry in laser assisted additive manufacturing. A second PhD student at TU Delft will use your methods as a basis for topological optimization of parts manufactured by AM.

    Your profile
You have obtained a MSc. degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline with a specialization in non-linear solid mechanics. A strong background in mathematics and computational modelling is required. You have experience with programming languages like Fortran or C++ and scripting languages like Python.

For more information on the research at the Nonlinear Solid Mechanics chair of the MS3 department, please visit http://www.utwente.nl/ctw/tm/. Additional information about this specific vacancy may be obtained from Dr. Bert Geijselaers, h.j.m.geijselaers@utwente.nl

PhD position Thermomechanical simulation of inhomogeneous deformations during sheet metal forming
    University of Twente, Netherlands
    Deadline: September 15, 2015

The main goal in this project is to develop a physically based thermomechanical constitutive model that can predict formation of inhomogeneous strains and inhomogeneous microstructures as a consequence of the material behavior associated with the yield point phenomenon.
An insight on the microstructural aspects of the yield point phenomenon will be sought which will lead to the development of a physically based material model to be implemented in existing non-linear Finite Element software. The developed model will incorporate thermal as well as mechanical aspects of the phenomenon. Use of a material model that inherits softening will cause physical (i.e. Lüders bands) and numerical localization (i.e. mesh dependency) during simulation of the deformation process. Therefore for the simulation the mesh dependency has to be solved using non-local formulations or regularization approaches, meanwhile obtaining inhomogeneous patterns with certain length-scale.
This project, which goes by the acronym ‘SIMdisq’, is a collaboration between University of Twente (UT) and industrial partner Tata Steel Europe. You will report on your research during bi-weekly meetings of your research group and regular meetings of the SIMdisq project. You are expected to present your results at international scientific conferences and publish them in academic literature.

    Your profile
You have obtained a MSc. degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline with special interest in solid mechanics and materials science. Prior knowledge in nonlinear solid mechanics and computational methods is required.
We welcome candidates with strong communication skills who like to present their work at conferences and (project) meetings. Fluency in English is required, both spoken and written. You need to provide IELTS test results (minimum score 6.5), TOEFL-iBT (minimum score 90) or Cambridge CAE or CPE. Some comprehension of the Dutch language and some teaching experience are beneficial.

PhD student on the physics of adhesion to wet and icy surfaces
    Eindhoven University of Technology, Netherlands
    Deadline: Wed, 14 Oct 2015

It is well known that gecko lizards can walk upside down on a ceiling. An elegant way of catching them is to spray them and the ceiling with water, which significantly reduces the effective adhesive forces. While this may be an elegant solution for zoologists, it provides a problem in a different context: conventional adhesive labels hardly stick on wet or icy surfaces. This is mainly because of two reasons: 1) the presence of water reduces the Van der Waals interaction between the adhesive and the target surface by approximately a factor of 10 and 2) water is effectively incompressible and prevents the surfaces to get in contact with each other. Existing commercial strategies for applying adhesive labels on moist targets focus on the removal of the water by means of porous layers or by means of hydrophilic, water-soluble additives that absorb the water. However, no commercial solution is available/known for improving adhesion on ice-covered objects, such as bloodbags and frozen goods removed from a refrigerator.
Due to the complexity of the problem, no quantitative physical models for optimizing adhesion to wet and icy surfaces have been developed, yet, and detailed understanding of the microscopic processes and underlying mechanisms remains elusive. For this reason, we propose to conduct a systematic and quantitative investigation, based on experiments and numerical simulations, of the use of micropatterned adhesive layers, which comprise a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) with a low glass-transition temperature as well as hydrogels. The latter represent a well-studied and mature material system, that can absorb multiples of their dry volume of water and for which material properties can be adjusted predictably over a large range by varying the polymeric constituents and the cross-link density. For proper adhesion, the water/ice layer needs to be thinned far below 10 nm, which renders this project a true nanofluidic and multidisciplinary challenge.

    Job requirements
Candidates with a background in physics, chemical or mechanical engineering or physical chemistry are encouraged to apply. The position is part of the Horizon-2020 Marie Sk³odowska-Curie Initial Training Network BioSmart Trainee (full title: Training in Bio-Inspired Design of Smart Adhesive Materials) and is open to candidates who have obtained their MSc degree no more than 4 years ago and who did not reside within the Netherlands for more than 12 months in the past 3 years. Applicants must not hold a PhD degree.

PhD Scholarship – Temporary Corrosion Protection of New Generation Magnesium Alloys
    The University of Queensland, Australia
    Deadline: Sun, 20 Sep 2015

    The role
The UQ Rail Mechanics group lead by A/Prof Paul Meehan are working with Bombardier Transportation Australia on a challenging project to design, develop and test a new optimised predictive maintenance system for axle bearings using mechanics based modelling. The algorithms will incorporate state of the art tribological mechanics for bearing wear and grease degradation that will be tested and tuned using UQ's unique two disk rolling testrig. The validated algorithms will then be used to determine the optimum conditions for the bearings to enable a potential 20% increase in overhaul periodicity leading to several tens of millions of dollars in saved maintenance costs.

Applicants should have a degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent in Mathematics or Science, with an interest in modelling and/or optimisation. The candidate must have excellent communication skills in terms of both written and spoken English language expression.

    Enquiries
Enquiries related to this position should be directed to Associate Professor Paul Meehan: meehan@uq.edu.au
