Postdoctoral Position (or PhD Student Position) in Computational Rheology
    TU München, Germany
    Deadline: November 2015

    Area of research
The research of Professor Germann’s fluid dynamics group focuses on the rheology of viscoelastic fluids that are of industrial relevance (e.g. wormlike micelles, polymeric solutions). The reason for the unusual rheological properties of viscoelastic fluids is their microstructural dynamics. To establish a more fundamental understanding of viscoelastic fluids, her research group investigates the relationship between their rheology and their microstructure. The research approach combines thermodynamic modeling and numerical simulation with laboratory experiments. More information about Professor Germann’s fluid dynamics group can be found at http://germann.wzw.tum.de/.

    Your project
The collaborative project “Teigrheologie und Oberflächeneigenschaften” (AiF 6474/15 N) between the groups of Profs. N. Germann and Th. Becker is on the relationship between the bulk and surface rheology of dough. The aim is to build a CFD toolbox that can predict the quality of dough already during dough processing. For the validation of the CFD toolbox, experimental data will be provided by the project partner.

    Your profile
We are looking for a talented individual who is excited about research and interested in pursuing an academic career. He/she should be able to work independently as well as to cooperate in an interdisciplinary team of researchers. Applicants should hold a PhD degree (postdoctoral position) or a Master degree (graduate student position) in computational engineering, applied mathematics, or a related field. The project will involve the numerical solution and analysis of viscoelastic fluid models using the software package OpenFoam. He/she should have a solid background in fluid mechanics and computational rheology. Previous experience with OpenFoam and is required. Good communication skills and fluency in both written and spoken English are required. German language skills are desirable.

    Your application
Please send your application by email and preferably in one single pdf-document to natalie.germann@tum.de.For full consideration, the application should include a cover letter, a detailed CV, a list of publications, copies of all educational certificates and transcripts of records, a summary of past research activities, evidence of teaching interest and abilities, and three letters of recommendation. The deadline for application is October 31, 2015. Early applications are encouraged; applications may be processed as soon as they are received.TUM is an equal opportunity employer. Qualified women are therefore particularly encouraged to apply. Applicants with disabilities are treated with preference given comparable qualification.

PhD position in CFD of supersonic two-phase flows
    Université de Sherbrooke, Canada
    Deadline: Thursday, September 10, 2015

    Methodology
Two-phase ejectors (the primary fluid is liquid and the secondary one is vapor) may be used in many industrial applications to replace, for example, the relaxation valve in refrigeration cycles while increasing the COP up to 11%. There is no CFD investigation reported in the literature. A particular attention will be paid to the choice of the turbulence modelling. Measurements at Hydro-Québec (Shawinigan) using a ejector refrigeration cycle working with CO2 will give important informations about the void fraction of the secondary fluid among other things. It will enable to validate the right multiphase model and the corresponding CFD tool. A parametric study will be then performed by varying the geometry of the ejector, the pressures and the temperatures of the generator and the evaporator, the compression ratio… One will investigate also the influence of the primary and secondary fluid properties on the ejector performances.

    Required skills
Master in fluid mechanics or thermal engineering. Good knowledge in numerical methods and wish to perform a combined numerical and experimental work. Knowledges in compressible and/or multiphase flows would be appreciated as well as a first experience with one of the following software: ANSYS or OpenFOAM.
