The University of Luxemburg within its multi-disciplinary and –cultural environment offers a PhD-position in mechanical engineering in close cooperation with WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research in Switzerland that conducts experimental work. In this project a discrete particle snow model for high strain rate deformations is developed. Such a model has several advantages to the traditional continuum snow models. First, a discrete model can directly include microstructural information. Second, it includes a priori contacts and bonding between the particles. Third, it can explicitly account for the large displacements and rearrangement of the ice grains during deformation that is the transformation of the continuous network of bonded ice grains into a granular medium. Hence, a discrete particle model explicitly includes all the relevant physical micro-scale processes. Work is to be started and continued from an
already available XDEM software-platform.
Expectations:
The successful candidate is expected:
• To carry out predictions using the Discrete Element Method
• To derive model approaches for the formation and destruction of bonds between ice grains
• To post-process predicted results in conjunction with a physically-based analysis
• To validate model approaches
• To compare experimental measurements and predictions to extract relevant features
• To document results and findings in English
Requirements:
Candidates should have a Master/Diploma degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or equivalent to pursue a PhD-study. This should ideally be complemented by the following skills:
• Knowledge of the Discrete Element Method
• Mathematics and numerical methods
• Object-oriented programming in particular C++
• One of the working languages: English, German or French
• Willingness to work in an inter-cultural environment
Benefits:
• The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the heart of Europe, a multilingual country, and headquarters of many European institutions and businesses, offers a particularly interesting setting.
• The University of Luxembourg offers students the opportunity to pursue doctoral studies under the supervision of academic staff or in cooperation with other host institutions.
• Fixed-term contract 3 years, full-time (40 hrs/week) with a possible extension to a 4th year.
• Employee status
The University of Luxembourg is an equal opportunity employer.
Additional information:
Applications (in English) should contain the following documents:
• A detailed curriculum vitae
• Cover letter mentioning the reference number
• Certificates
• List of publications and research projects
