Postdoctoral Position at UPenn : Finite Element Simulations of Cell-Matrix Interactions in Micro-tissues

A postdoctoral position with primary focus on tissue mechanics is available immediately in the Shenoy Research Group at the University of Pennsylvania. We are looking for a strongly motivated candidate to work on an NIH supported project on the interactions of cells in 3D micro tissues mediated by extracellular matrices using analytical and finite element methods (for example, H. Wang et. al, PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES, 110(52): 20 923-20928 NOVEMBER 2013).
The ideal candidate will have a background in solid mechanics with expertise in finite element simulations, in particular numerical implementation of non-linear material models. This individual will have the opportunity to be directly involved in complimentary experimental investigations in the medical school at UPenn and our collaborators elsewhere.

Postdoc Fellow Position about Energy Design at Virginia Tech

A postdoc position is available immediately for an externally funded project on ocean wave energy in the department of Mechanical Engineering, Virginia Tech. The objective is to develop and test a novel mechanical solution for converting ocean wave energy into electricity. Prototypes of 5kW - 30KW will be designed, tested, and demonstrated in both labs and in oceans. The machine/mechatronics design skills are essential and the knowledge in vibration/dynamics, fluid, control and power electronics will be a plus. The postdoctoral fellow will also have opportunity to participate in scholarly research in the NSF IUCRC Center of Energy Harvesting and to gain broad training including graduate student mentoring. The position’s primary area of research will focus on characterizing additively manufactured metallic components. The initial appointment is for one year with potential to extend, subject to the availability of funds. A background in metals-based additive manufacturing is required. Expertise is particularly desired in powder bed-based 3D printing of Ti alloys, metrology of the resulting components and Finite Element Analysis. PhD Positions in Advanced Virtual Prototyping at the University of Manchester

I am currently recruiting new PhD students to join my research group at The School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering at the University of Manchester. The core focus of the group is advanced computing for engineering simulation. My research interests centre on extreme scale parallel computing, cloud computing and virtual reality simulation platforms, applied to scientific and engineering problems involving complex processes. The PhD projects I supervise involve adapting the open source software ParaFEM to solve challenging research problems of interest to the PhD student and sponsor (where applicable). Recent projects include:

• Novel design of components for fusion reactors
  
• Structural integrity assessment of nuclear reactor cores
  
• Simulation of surgical procedures
  
• Fluid-structure interaction for wind energy
  
• Multiscale modelling using cellular automata
  
• The study of dinosaurs

A postdoctoral position is available in the area of computational and experimental analysis of biological materials. The primary objective of this project is to use numerical and experimental
methods to investigate the mechanical response of (bio-)composite structures. We are interested in applicants with expertise in the area of mechanics of materials and previous experience with computer programming (e.g. FORTRAN/C++), FEM, and multiscale modelling. The ideal candidate should also have a background in experimental studies.
