PhD position on lower limb prosthetics at University of Southampton, U.K.

We look for a suitable PhD candidate to work in the area of lower limb prosthetics at the University of Southampton, starting September/October 2016. Quality of prosthetic socket fit is of highest important for lower limb amputees because the residual limb is subject to intensive and prolonged mechanical load during walking and daily activities. An ill-fitted socket could not only affect the usage and overall outcome of the prosthesis but also affect tissue health of the stump. This could be particularly prominent for amputees who often suffer fromcomorbidities including diabetes, peripheral vascular disease and peripheral neuropathy etc. Thus, their stump health is often vulnerable. This multidisciplinary project aims to address various challenges faced at the critical interface between residuum limb and prosthetic socket.Suitable candidates should have background/ knowledge/interest in one of the following areas including solid mechanics, mechatronics, control, computational design and modelling, programming, or embedded systems, sensors, biomechanics etc. No previous experience in lower limb prosthetics (or other biomedical areas) is required albeit interest in this area is desirable. You will generally need a 2:1 or first-class degree or equivalent in a related discipline to be eligible to apply. To express interest and/or for further information, please provide your CV and contact Prof. Liudi Jiang (L.Jiang@soton.ac.uk).

The engineering researcher will have responsibilities that include: (1) Determine experimentally and model computationally the mechanical and failure properties of the round window membrane in animal models as well as in human cadaveric tissue; (2) Perform and interpret micro-CT scans of the temporal bone including the cochlea; (3) Develop a detailed Finite Element Method (FEM) model of the deformation and perforation of the round window membrane via microscale needles; (4) Determine experimentally and model computationally the fluid flow and/or diffusion of various chemical and molecular species across both an intact and a perforated round window membrane. The successful candidate will extensively perform nanoindentation, tensile testing, bulge testing, computer-aided design, 3D printing, FEM modeling, optical and scanning electron microscopy, among many other methods.
The biological/medical researcher will have responsibilities that include: evaluate the safety of application of tools developed on hearing and the inner earusing in vitro and in vivo animal models as well as cadaveric human temporal bones; techniques used to assess safety will require survival animal surgery and include histology (light & electron microscopy), electrophysiology (e.g. ABR, OAE), and immunological methods. He/she will be collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team and will work with otolaryngologists, hearing scientists, and medical students to bring the academic studies to clinical trials.
