    RESEARCH SUBJECT

    Aerodynamics of passively reconfiguring structures

    DIRECTOR/CODIRECTOR

Director: Frederick Gosselin Codirector: Njuki W. Mureithi
    POSTING

    End of posting : 28 April 2012
    UNITS AND DEPARTMENTS

Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering, BWC/AECL/NSERC Industrial Chair of Fluid-Structure Interaction
    DETAILED DESCRIPTION

In this project, we seek to combine wind tunnel experiments as well as analytical and numerical simulations to study passive drag reduction mechanisms of flexible structures. This research field is inspired by the reconfiguration of plants and trees that deform with great amplitude when exposed to wind and thus reduce the drag forces they suffer.
The study of reconfiguration mechanisms allows to understand the adaptation of plants to their environment and thus better predict wind dammages to crops and forests. Moreover, through biomimetism, we can design better towed sonar systems as well as develop flexible aircraft wings or wind turbine blades that can adapt passively to the fluid flows they are subjected to.
    POSSIBLE FUNDING

    Funding available.

    Assalamualaikum and Good Day,

    Dear all,
Appreciate if you could pass the words around. i'm looking for proactive, hardworking and independant individuals to be my full-time postgraduate students for the following projects:

    1) Thermal shrinkage and gas void formation study (MSc)
Continuation of my currently completing MSc student's work
Funding available for monthly allowance payment, conference, etc after Mar 2013 upon satisfying progress after initial 3 mths GA (graduate assistantship) payment
All equipments and test rigs are readily available
For further details on the project, you may contact Ms Jaspreet Kaur: jessipreeti88@gmail.com

    Executive summary of project :
Predicting a restart pressure for gelled waxy crude has always been a challenge due to the thixotropic nature of the crude apart from the thermal shrinkage and presence of gas voids within the gelled crude. Current industrial practice assumes single phase crude (incompressible) and uses a conventional relation to predict the restart pressure. This results in overprediction and subsequently overdesigning of the pipelines. To accurately predict the restart pressure, it is then essential to study the formation of the gelled crude which in real situation is statically cooled after shutdown, dynamically cooled or cooled in mixed scenarios. This study is aimed to analyze the formation of the gelled crude under different cooling scenarios and different cooling shear rate (for dynamic cooling). The thermal shrinkage and subsequently the amount of gas voids will be analyzed as these parameters affect the compressibility of the gelled crude. The outcome of the study could then be used to fully understand the nature of the gelled crude and its compressibility in order to accurately predict the restart pressure. The anticipated pressure required to flush the gelled crude out of the pipeline would then be significantly lower than the conventional prediction for a more compressible gelled crude.

2)DEVELOPMENT OF A NOVEL METHOD FOR DRAG REDUCTION ASSESSMENT (PhD)
Proposal for funding submitted and is in final stage of deliberation end of 2012
Funding (upon success of the above proposal) is available for monthly allowance payment, conference, etc upon satisfying progress after initial 3 mths GA payment
Else, another proposal will be submitted upon success completion of preliminary work
All equipments and test rigs are readily available

    Executive summary of the project:
Drag reduction is observed as reduced frictional pressure losses under turbulent flow conditions and hence, substantially increase the flowrate of the fluid. Practical application includes water flooding system, pipeline transport and drainage system. In cases of heavy rain, for instance, existing drainage system may not be able to cope with the amount of water introduced into the system and is further worsen with the accumulation of mud, leaves and other debris. Drag reducing agents (DRA), such as polymers, can be introduced to increase the flowrate of water flowing, reducing the water accumulation in the system and subsequently lesser possibility of heavy flooding. One of the famous applications of DRA is within the Trans Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) where first DRA was injected on July 1st 1979. Now, the throughput within TAPS exceeds 1.5 mill. barrel per day with 11 pumping stations across more than 1000 km length pipelines. Currently-used polymers as drag reduction agent are polyacrylamide and carboxymethylcellulose, to name a few. Current method of assessment of the effectiveness of DRAs prior to being introduced commercially is via flow loop studies where pressure drops and the flow rates of the fluid transport is monitored upon injection of the DRA [Jaafar and Poole, 2011, Japper-Jaafar et. al., 2009, amongst others). Such method is very expensive especially if the DRA is to be tested with crude oils which are highly valuable. The method also requires time as the pressure drop will be monitored each time upon increase of pump speed with greater risk of leakages. Hence, a more practical method of assessment is required to address these limitations. In this proposed research study, a rheometer will be explored to simulate the turbulent flow condition required for drag reduction. DRA will be introduced into the sample and upon shear, any reduction in torque produced is perceived as a reduction of drag. However, to achieve high turbulent flow regimes, several modifications to the geometry will be explored as current available geometries allow limited range of Reynolds number to be achieved due to the flow orientation (Darbouret et. al, 2009). The proposed method upon success could produce quick results in an inexpensive manner with small sample volume requirement (<~10mL per measurement).
