    Description of the job

    A PhD opportunity “Additive manufacturing – Process Simulation and Design Optimization” has arisen within Airbus to be based on the Toulouse site in France.
    The PhD will be managed in collaboration with the LAMPA research laboratory in Angers (France).

    Tasks & accountabilities

    The main objective of the PhD is to develop:
    (i) Numerical tools for chained simulation of the different steps of the industrial processes, to predict defects such as residual stress and distortion;
    (ii) In collaboration with aeronautical design engineers, a prototype software that allows them to anticipate manufacturing problems, such as residual stress and distortion.

    The research works are focused on the manufacturing of titanium alloy parts (Ti6Al4V) using SLM (Selective Laser Melting) and EBAM (Electron Beam Additive Manufacturing) processes.
    The main tasks are the following:
    (i) Development of a predictive tool adapted to preliminary design of aeronautical parts obtained by additive manufacturing;
    (ii) Experimental analysis and modelling of each stages of the industrial process;
    (iii) Numerical simulation of the manufacturing process to predict the distortions at each stage.

    The PhD student must also contribute to:

    • Project management;
    • Application of new knowledge to industrial use-cases and transmission of new knowledge to AIRBUS engineers;
    • Communication and publications: patents, technology transfers, scientific articles and international conferences.

    Required skills

    As the successful candidate you are able to demonstrate the following skills and competences:

    • A Master 2 in research is mandatory (aerospace, materials, structural mechanics, numerical analysis),
    • An experience in Structure and in Material and processes is mandatory,
    • An experience in programming would be highly appreciated,
    • Knowledge of Fortran and/or Python and or C would be highly appreciated,
    • Knowledge of ABAQUS is mandatory,
    • Team spirit,
    • Good communication skills,
    • Autonomy, agility and perseverance,
    • Self-taught,
    • Advanced level in English,
    • Advanced level in French or willingness to learn.

    Built Environment Science and Technology (BEST) Lab is found by Dr. Bing Dong in Spring 2013. Since then, BEST lab has hosted 4 PhD students, 10 Master students, 4 undergraduate students and 1 exchange student. The mission of BEST lab is to advance the fundamental knowledge of built environment through an integration of artificial intelligence, multi-physics modeling and behavior science. The research topics of BEST lab includes but not limited to

    Smart Building Systems (HVAC, Lighting, etc.), Occupancy Behavior Modeling, Building Energy Simulation, HVAC Modeling, Fault Detection and Diagnostics, Building to Grid Integration and Big Data Analytics for Buildings.     A PhD position is open for summer or fall 2017 in Advanced Hierarchical Materials by Design Lab at Louisiana Tech University on multiscale modeling of materials for energy applications with emphasis on ferroic materials. The candidates must have earned a M.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering or related fields and have a solid background in theoretical and computational mechanics, specifically continuum mechanics and finite element modeling, and need to be familiar with a programming language (preferably C/C++). Familiarity with atomistic simulations using molecular dynamics and software packages COMSOL, LAMMPS, and ParaView is a plus.
