Composites / Numerical FE-based Fatigue Analysis

    50000403v1836
    Promoter: Stepan Lomov

    Description: Objectives of industrial research:
RFRC parts in an automobile are subject for time-dependent loads, originating from dynamic loading due to interaction with the adjoining parts and variable temperature loads. The design loads are normally much less then the strength of the material, hence the most important design drivers are stiffness and durability – fatigue. The latter, on one hand, plays the paramount role in reliability and safety of the part, on the other hand, is much more difficult to assess. As for metal structures the use of simulation tools could drastically decrease the development time by at the same time taking into account more design variants, the ability to use similar methods for the RFRC parts is crucial for the applicability and the usage for lighter and less CO2 emitting vehicles.

Industrial aims of the project are:
    • Numerical fatigue life prediction results with a similar quality for RFRC as for metals and based on a small amount of material testing.
    • For durability simulation, the first goal always lies in predicting the correct critical areas, which using today’s methods this is not reached for RFRC parts.
    • Secondly for durability simulation, the prediction accuracy for metal sheets today lies within the scattering of the tests (i.e. a range of a factor 3 in lifetime), similar the prediction quality for durability of RFRC should be in the scattering of the tests. This scattering is not known and needs to be detected in this project.
    • Validation on industrial prototypes is a main goal to achieve reliable and sustainable results.

    Researchers Objective:
The Baekeland program supports industry relevant research. The applicant will be employed at LMS International as the industrial partner. The main goal will be to establish and validate methodologies to describe local fatigue behavior based on local material properties that can be estimated from the fiber distribution, like the local stiffness behavior. In a further step the influence of composites matrix degradation (like fibre debonding) on global fatigue behavior needs to be analysed.

The industrial part of the work includes:
    • method development
    • method implementation as prototype software
    • method validation
Ultimately, exploring how to extend the newly developed methods for numerical fatigue life prediction of RFRC composites to other types of composites such as multi-layer UD composites and even textile/fabric based composites also belongs to the targeted research PhD program.

    Candidate profile:
All candidates must be fluent in spoken and written English. An ideal candidate has a degree in engineering (mechanical, etc. ) or physics and an adequate mathematical background or has a degree in mathematics with adequate mechanical background.
    • Specific experience with fatigue simulation methodology is an advantage.
    • Specific experience with molding simulation (MoldFlow) is an advantage
    • Specific experience with CAE simulation software (ABAQUS, LMS Virtual.Lab, other ...) is an advantage
    • Knowledge of programming languages (preferably C/C++) and knowledge of Matlab are an advantage.
The research activities will mainly be carried out at LMS International in Leuven, Belgium, but a close collaboration with the LMS Durability Expert Centre in Kaiserslautern, Germany is mandatory.

Development of innovative modelling tools for mechanical behavior of fiber-reinforced composites modified with carbon nanotubes

    50000403v1855
    Promoter: Larissa Gorbatikh

Description: Existing state-of-the-art epoxy-based carbon fibre reinforced composites possess excellent stiffness and strength, but their toughness is limited by early damage initiation. It is commonly manifested in the form of multiple microcracks that originate at high stress concentration sites at (or close to) matrix/fibre interfaces, then coalesce and develop into matrix cracks. The threshold for the first appearance of these matrix cracks seems to be linked to the fatigue life of a composite and hence puts tremendous design restrictions in applications involving cyclic loading. This leads to overdesign of composite parts.

The damage resistance can be improved with the use of a material hierarchy. The advantage of a hierarchical material design lies in its multi-level organization that provides opportunities to achieve multiple properties simultaneously, if a specific property is linked to a specific level. For example, in the existing state-of-the-art polymer composites (see figure to the right), stiffness requirement is met by reinforcement architecture on meso and micro levels (see woven fabric), whilst toughness is controlled by matrix structure on micro and nano levels (for instance, through addition of toughening components, carbon nano-tubes), and by interface properties. In the scope of this project a true potential of a hierarchy will be explored to create synergetic effects on material mechanical properties. Preliminary studies indicate that this synergy can be achieved in materials with well controlled hierarchical structures.

This PhD project is part of the large European FP-7 project “Innovative Material Synergies & Composite Processing Strategies“ that brings together 17 academic and industrial partners.
