This research is part of a collaboration between the Paul Scherrer Institute, the Max Planck Institute in Düsseldorf and the University of Erlangen. The main objective is to develop knowledge on the interplay between the deformation mechanisms in nanocrystalline metals. Therefore you will perform transient experiments in the laboratory and in-situ mechanical testing during X-ray diffraction at the Swiss Light Source. You will also use basic microscopy methods to characterize the microstructure of the materials under investigation. The outcome of this research will be used in constitutive models.
Your profile

You hold a Master degree in physics or materials science
Experience in mechanical testing and/or diffraction techniques is of advantage
Excellent communication skills in English, knowledge of German is welcome
You enjoy working in an international team
You will be registered as a PhD Student at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology EPFL in Lausanne, while the practical work will be carried out at PSI.

The Chair of Engineering Geology at ETH Zurich invites applications for a PhD position in the field of Mine Drainage and Hydromechanical Properties of Crystalline Basement Rocks. The successful candidate must have an MSc in earth sciences, mining or geothermal engineering, or related field. Knowledge and experience in structural geology, rock mechanics and groundwater hydraulics are of prime importance. Interest in field and desk studies in historical and on-going subsurface mining, knowledge of geographical information systems and good communication skills (preferably in German) are strongly desired.

This position is part of a scientific investigation for the geological survey of Sachsen. The study area for the project covers the crystalline basement rocks of Sachsen (Eastern Germany), a world-famous mining region including the Erzgebirge of the Bohemian Massif. The study area offers a unique opportunity to investigate deep groundwater circulations in crystalline basements rocks and relate current stress conditions and past tectonic activity to preferential groundwater pathways at depth.

The primary focus of this PhD position is to understand controls on the regional groundwater flow in crystalline basement rocks, properties which are of prime importance for mining activities, deep geothermal energy and nuclear waste disposal. This PhD project will be strongly based on data sets generated by more than 100 years of surface and subsurface mining, deep drillings and selected new field observations. The duration of the position is approximately 3-4 years and can be filled by the successful candidate in fall 2012.

The Engineering Geology group consists of approximately 20 multidisciplinary scientists involved in a leading research and teaching program in quantitative engineering geology.
