    Fracture processes in rock material

    50000403v1360
    Promoter: Andre Vervoort

Description: During the failure process of rock material numerous micro-cracks are formed. These micro-cracks evolve towards macro-fractures and failure of the rock material. Different aspects of this complex process have been investigated within the research unit Mining, e.g. effect of stress gradients, effect of the presence of planar heterogeneities, cyclic loading and unloading, and the study of transversal isotropic rock. In a next step, the spatial distribution of weak elements (e.g. micro-fractures, soft material, cavities) within the rock on the failure process will be studied and quantified. The research will be a combination of specifically designed laboratory experiments and numerical simulations using discontinuous models.

Key words: Rock mechanics, fracture mechanics

    Latest application date: 2009-12-15

    Financing: available

Type of Position: scholarship or salary

Source of Funding: K.U.Leuven, Dept of Civil Eng.

Duration of the Project : 4 years

Research group: Department of Civil Engineering

Remarks: 1) Depending on earlier qualifications, the candidate has first to do a pre-doc of 6 to 12 mionths, after which an evaluation takes place.

PhD student in Aging of Cementitious Materials, positioned at Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology

    Reference number 2009/161
    Apply for this job
    Application deadline 2009-11-15
Building Technology, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
    Job description
Deposition of low and intermediate level radioactive waste (LILW) involves processes with duration of up to 100 000 years due to long half-life of various radioactive ions that may easily contaminate the groundwater if leached from the repository. The repository for nuclear waste involves an extensive use of concrete in building structures and containers. The longevity of these structures and containers is of high importance for the performance analysis of the repository.
This doctoral project intends to improve the knowledge and understanding of the aging of cementitious materials used in the concrete structures for storage of nuclear wastes. The primary objective of the project is to investigate the mechanical and chemical properties of the aged cementitious materials by experimental methods and to predict the aging process in a perspective of 100 000 years. The overall goal is to establish a mechanism-based (chemo-mechanical coupled) model for safer prediction of longevity of concrete in storage facilities for nuclear waste. The project work involves thermodynamic modelling, development of accelerated aging tests, physical, chemical characterization of young and aged cementitious materials, including mechanical, transport (diffusivity) properties, binding (adsorption) capacities and surface complexation (charging) behaviour.

Water & Earth System Science Research Institute (WESS)

The Universities of Tübingen, Hohenheim, Stuttgart and the Helmholtz-Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ Leipzig have recently founded the Water & Earth System Science Research Institute (WESS), located in Tübingen, Baden-Württemberg. The joint research center focuses on the impact of changing environmental conditions on the water cycle as well as on the fate of pollutants and nutrients in water, soil and aquifers at the catchment scale.

A particular focus of WESS lies in the assessment of river-groundwater exchange processes which are important for the hydrological functioning of catchments and have strong implications on biogeochemical cycling, the fate and behavior of water-borne pollutants, and the net export of groundwater pollutants to rivers.

To address these questions, WESS is building up an interdisciplinary working group of six doctoral students headed by a senior scientist. Researchers will have their major work place at WESS or one of the WESS partner institutions, but will be required to work part time at the other partner institutions and at field sites in the Upper Neckar (Baden-Württemberg) and Bode (Saxonia-Anhalt) catchments. In particular we are searching for:

Senior scientist (hydrologist, environmental scientist or engineer, geo-ecologist) [W2.0] as head of the interdisciplinary workgroup and coordinator of activities of the river-groundwater group with other WESS activities. The successful candidate is expected to have developed his/her own research profile. Focus on scale effects of river-groundwater exchange is preferred. Work experience including publications in peer-reviewed journals in the field of river-groundwater exchange is requested. Main workplace is Tübingen. Salary: E-14.

    Netherland; PhD Student (ECOSHAPE/BWN project)
As part of the “Ecoshape/Building with Nature” project “Budget modelling of fines in the Dutch coastal zone”, measurements will be carried out in the Dutch coastal zone (North Holland) with the aim of determining the variations in concentration of suspended particulate matter (SPM) on seasonal as well as tidal time scales; moreover, spatial variations will be determined both in the vertical and cross-slope directions. In these measurements, newly developed calibration techniques will be used. This program has been inspired by recent measurements showing hot spots of high SPM concentrations, the presence of which could radically change the budget estimates that are in use to date. The PhD-project involves the active participation in the four measurement campaigns, the analysis and interpretation of the data, and the development of conceptual physical models for understanding the dominant features. Numerical work will be carried out jointly with linked projects. An important part of this project is also the communication and exchange of results with participants from other Ecoshape/BwN projects.

    Functie-eisen

We are looking for an enthusiastic and creative person with a MSc degree in Physical Oceanography, Civil Engineering or Physics, preferably with experience in coastal hydrodynamics and affinity with observational work.
