Numerical modeling of near-bottom sediment transport

    50000403v1810

    Promoter: Erik Toorman

    details
    Description: GENERAL

Three research positions are available within the scope of 2 new European FP7 research projects (THESEUS and FIELD_AC). The THESEUS project focuses on the application of combined innovative mitigation and adaptation technologies with the aim of delivering a low-risk coast for human use/development and healthy coastal habitats and this in a changing climate and growing European economy. The FIELD_AC project aims at providing a new GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security “downstream” service at harbour/river-mouth scales complementing the current simulations from Marine Core Services (MCS) and will support the development and use of space imagery for the always difficult land-ocean boundary. The three research topics available in the Hydraulics Division are:
    • Numerical modeling of near-bottom sediment transport;
    • Study of river flows and pollution in coastal areas;
    • Coastal technologies and coastal problems, including investigation of the impact of climate change on storm surges.
The three research positions offer an opportunity to be involved in high profile EU flagship projects, which will provide the experience of working with leading researchers from across Europe. The projects consider several European case-studies, including for expamle the Catalan Coast, Wadden Sea and the Northern Adriadic. Short local stays at some of these study site locations might be needed.

    SPECIFIC

The Sediment Mechanics research unit of the K.U.Leuven Hydraulics Laboratory has a vacancy for a research position, starting January 2010 (or as soon as possible thereafter). The candidate is expected to carry on her/his research for the duration of 4 years in order to obtain the degree of PhD.

It has been hypothesized for more than a decade that currently used sediment transport models for morphodynamic studies (e.g., harbor siltation, system response to dredging or structures, …) can improve considerably in their predicting capacity when the near-bottom high-concentration effects in the last few centimeters above the bed can be accounted for with a physics-based model. Indeed, experimental observations and theoretical considerations (partially based on two-phase micro-scale models) show that the flow and suspension capacity of the water column are strongly affected by the processes of particle-fluid interactions in the benthic layer. From previous work it has been concluded that a low-Reynolds near-bottom sediment transport model is necessary to make the necessary advancement in understanding and accurate prediction of sediment transport. Such a model is currently under development and has been tested successfully with data from a few flume studies.

The candidate’s task is to focus on the efficient modeling of near-bottom sediment transport in 3D morphodynamic modeling codes through an innovative methodology based on this new low-Reynolds transport model. This turbulence model is currently implemented in the FENST-2D research code of the KULeuven. The aim of the research is first to fine-tune this new methodology to be applied for a variety of conditions, especially bed load transport and fluid mud layer dynamics over flat bottoms and bed forms. Finally, the modeling strategy needs to be made applicable to large scale 3D problems on relatively coarse grids.

This work is part of our contributions to the European FP7 Programme projects THESEUS and FIELD_AC and to the development of a new 3D morphodynamic model for the Flemish Government. The research should lead to a generic methodology which the other project partners can implement and test in their own models, applied to selected case studies.

    details
Description: The Urban and River Hydrology and Hydraulics research unit of the K.U.Leuven Hydraulics Laboratory has a vacancy for a research position, starting January 2010 (or as soon as possible thereafter). The candidate is expected to carry on her/his research for the duration of 4 years in order to obtain the degree of PhD.

The candidate’s task is to focus on the efficient quantification of continental (river basin) run-off, both quantitatively (discharges, volumes) and qualitatively (nutrients, sediments). Numerical modelling and data analysis will be combined, with specific focus on European coastal areas as case-studies. The research involves identification of the processes expected to be dominant for coastal impact prediction, quantification of the run-off fluxes and pollutants by combining numerical (river and sewer) catchment modelling with data analysis, and statistical time series processing. Both detailed physically-based models and simplified data-driven models will be considered. Good modelling practice also involves quantification of uncertainties in the model predictions.

This work is part of our contributions to the European FP7 Programme projects FIELD_AC (“Fluxes, interactions and environment at the land-ocean boundary, downscaling, assimilation and coupling”) and THESEUS (“Innovative technologies for safer European coasts in a changing climate”). The Hydraulics Laboratory of K.U.Leuven is Work Package leader for FIELD_AC, for research activities that should provide best possible boundary conditions for coastal water quality modelling. The candidate’s research will be mainly linked to these activities. The successful candidate will be based at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven as part of the Hydraulics Laboratory research group. They will have the advantage of working in an international group with a wide range of expertise.

    Two Open Graduate Research Assistantships
Usama El Shamy (Environmental and Civil Engineering Department) and Paul Krueger (Mechanical Engineering Department) at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, USA announce two open Graduate Research Assistantships for their project entitled “Multiscale experimental and computational investigations of erosion-induced failure of levee systems” and recently funded by the National Science Foundation. The activities of this interdisciplinary research effort are centered around providing an experimentally validated, and thus predictive, computational research tool for the analysis and design of geotechnical systems subjected to extreme loading conditions and exploring the complex response of flood-induced failure of levee systems under representative flooding scenarios. The research includes a computational component, supervised by Prof. El Shamy, and an experimental component, supervised by Prof. Krueger. One GRA opening is available for each component, brief descriptions of which are given below.
Computational Component (Prof. El Shamy): A multi-scale computational approach that combines the best features of continuum-based techniques and microscale models will be developed to simulate the soil-fluid-structure system that represents a levee in a general way. The objective of the computational work is to capture, with minimal empirical tuning, the effects of surface waves and deformation of the floodwall, the possible separation between of the floodwall and from the soil as floodwater rises and the impact of such separation on the distribution of water pressure surrounding the wall as well as possible occurrence of piping and scour in the soil media in the neighborhood of the floodwall. The project requires a student with a strong background in programming (preferably using C++) and is familiar with computational modeling tools such the finite element method, DEM, and CFD.
Experimental Component (Prof. Krueger): The novel experimental program will quantitatively investigate the interaction between a fluid and embedded particles in shear and unsteady flows. Using transparent particles embedded in a matched-index-of-refraction fluid, the combined motion of the fluid and densely-packed particles will, for the first time, be measured using a combination of digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) and direct imaging of the embedded particles. The experimental results will serve to construct a model for the lift force on particles – which is necessary for accurate simulations of scour and erosion. Additionally, experiments of simplified model levee systems will be used to validate the computational method. Prior experience with DPIV is not a requirement for this project, but experience with DPIV and image processing will be evaluated positively. Interested students must have some computer programming experience, preferably in Matlab.
The GRA positions will be for 2.5 years, beginning fall of 2010. The positions include a tuition waiver and a monthly stipend of $1650. Students who have completed a Masters degree are preferred, but exceptional students who have completed a Bachelors degree and have experience related to the research will also be considered. Commensurate with the expectations of a PhD degree, the students will be expected to work as a teaching assistant in departmental laboratory courses for two semesters during the research project to assist in the development of teaching and communication skills. Candidates interested in either component should send a detailed résumé and one-page statement of interest to the appropriate supervisor. To meet deadlines for the fall semester, candidates should send information as soon as possible. The contact information for the project supervisors is given below:

    Job description
Would you love working with an enthusiastic team of experts in the field of constitutive modelling and characterisation of infrastructure material? If so, this might be just the job for you!

Practice and many studies have shown that asphalt wearing surfaces exposed to moisture generally start loosing aggregates prematurely. Long-term damage development in asphalt concrete is a complex problem, involving a large number of loading cycles and an interaction with the environment, in which temperature, oxidation and moisture play an important role.

Your challenge is to develop a new model for the simulation of water-structure interaction that causes the erosion process in the connected air-voids of asphalt concrete materials, and to measure the necessary parameters in the laboratory. The computational model will be incorporated in a large finite element code CAPA-3D, developed by the Group of Mechanics of Infrastructure Materials. The experimental work will be carried out at the laboratory of the Road and Railway Engineering group.

In addition to a working finite element-based model, you will develop a new testing protocol which can assist road contractors and authorities in better assessing the moisture susceptibility of asphalt concrete mixtures.

    Visit www.phd.tudelft.nl for more information.

    Requirements
You have an MSc degree in engineering with a solid background in computational mechanics and/or material science. Knowledge of finite elements and modelling fluid-structure interactions is an advantage.

PhD Scholarship in Structural Health Monitoring of Bridges, Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Australia

PhD scholarship in structural health monitoring of bridges (up to $50K tax free)

As one of Australia’s leading universities, Queensland University of Technology (QUT) has a solid record of success in solving problems for industry and the community, and developing new products and processes.

Applications are invited from appropriately qualified individuals for a PhD scholarship being offered in QUT’s Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering (Brisbane) to work on the following project:

Structural Health Monitoring of Bridges using Vibration Characteristics

Many bridges in Australia are old and are now subjected to heavier and faster moving loads, than originally envisaged and in addition suffer structural deterioration with age. These factors can cause localised distress, which if not attended to can cause bridge failure with adverse consequences.

To address this, the Commonwealth Government – through the Australian Research Council, supported by Queensland Main Roads Department and Brisbane City Council – recently funded a research project to develop an innovative structural health monitoring system to monitor and predict distress in our bridges.

This project will develop and use modern sensor (wired and wireless) technology and dynamic computer simulation techniques to achieve the aims.

We are looking for a Honours graduate in Civil/Structural/Mechanical/ Electrical Engineering with interests in experimental work and finite element modelling.

He/she can expect up to $40,000 pa tax free depending on qualifications and experience. This amount includes approximately $4,000 worth of tutoring. A top-up of $10,000 from CR-CIEAM is possible.
