A research assistant position for supporting a PhD degree applicant is available in the geotechnical engineering program at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. There are several main research fields for the assistantships in geotechnical engineering in the areas of underground construction/mining, resilient infrastructures and soil/rock erosion characteristics.

Highly motivated individuals with an earned Master’s degree and strong academic backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Having a strong record of publication and knowledge of Finite Element modeling and familiarity with constitutive model developments as well as FLAC or PLAXIS or ABAQUS is a plus. A PhD with full financial support is available in construction engineering and management in our university (City University of Hong Kong). The admitted student will pursue Ph.D. degree in civil engineering with a specialization in construction management. The student is expected to work with Dr. Xiaowei Luo in the field of Building Information Modeling (BIM), Construction Automation, Construction Safety Management, Wireless Sensor Network and Green Buildings.
Minimum Requirements:
Ø B.S. in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Architectural Engineering, Computer and Electrical Engineering or related fields.
Ø TOFEL 550 (papers-based) or 213 (computer- based) marks or 79 (internet- based) or IELTS overall band score 6.5;
Ø Good oral/writing skills in English and good communication skill.
Preferred Requirements:

The goal with a PhD position is to develop general research proficiency and a high competence within your specific research area. As a PhD student, you will primarily conduct research, often together with other researchers and PhD students. You will also follow PhD courses, be involved in teaching activities, and participate in international conferences and networks. You are expected to write a licentiate thesis within 2-3 years and defend your doctoral thesis within 4-5 years. The total time period for the position is limited to four years full time, or five years with 20% teaching load.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The employment is composed of a maximum full-time four-year doctoral programme and a maximum one year of department duties, including teaching, equivalent to a maximum of 20% of the total working time. The employment is thus limited to a total of five years. The employment is tied to successful progress of doctoral studies, evaluated after one and three years.

Qualifications
To qualify as PhD student, you must have a Master's Degree, corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits, in a relevant field. The position requires good communication skills in written and spoken English. Applicants who do not have English or a Scandinavian language as their mother tongue need to have passed an English language test, for example TOEFL 550 (paper-based)/TOEFL 213 (computer-based), prior to admission. Two PhD Positions in Climate REsilient coaST (CREST) wave-current-sediment modellling
Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium

For the Hydraulics Section of the Department of Civil Engineering KU Leuven we welcome the application for two full-time (4 years) PhD research positions within the framework of the CREST (ClimateREsilient coaST) project funded by the Flemish Agency for Innovation by Science andTechnology (IWT - project 150028)
Models that will be used to reach the goals of the project will include OpenFoam and the TELEMAC (2D and 3D)-TOMAWAC-SISYPHE model train supplemented with the Xbeach model. The developments will be tested against lab (mainly from literature) and field data (application focus is the Belgian coastal area). The projec tincludes new field data collection in the Belgian coastal area, but special efforts are foreseen to make a wealth of earlier data easily accessible.
The positions will be open until filled. The earlieststarting date will be December 2015.

Profile
The candidate holds a master degree in Engineering (civil, mechanical, ...), oceanography or related fields. Background in coastal hydrodynamics ormorphodynamics will be an asset. Modelling experience (hydrodynamics, waves,sediment transport and/or computational fluid dynamics) and good knowledge of a programming language (FORTAN, MATLAB, ...) is essential to the position. Active knowledge of the specific software packages TELEMAC, TOMAWAC, SISYPHE, XBeach and/or OpenFOAM will be an asset. The candidate shall be able to carry out research investigation independently, and willing to work in a multidisciplinary team. He/she should be proficient in English, have excellent scientific writing, planning and communication skills, and be an enthusiastic team player.
