    Post doct/ Phd student positions

    One postdoctoral/Ph.D. student position is available within the Multi-Hazard & Multi-Scale Structural Dynamics & RISK Research Lab at Case Western Reserve University. The successful candidate will play a leading role for a research project on earthquake early response systems. The main objective of this project is to define the index of structural system damage states, based on structural responses at the constitutive level for decision-making, given signals from the earthquake early warning system.

    Qualifications:

    For Postdoctoral position:
    - A Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (US Degree only, Canadian citizens can apply for this position with Canadian degree and at least one US reference out of three references)
    - Productive writing skills for weekly or monthly progress reports and technical papers
    - Knowledge of seismic hazards and structural fragility analysis
    - Experience with nonlinear transient finite element structural analysis using LS-DYNA
    - Experience with parallel programming
    - Knowledge of data analysis and programming using MATLAB or C / C++
    - Knowledge of various operating systems, e.g., Linux, MAC and Windows
    - Commitment to working for at least 3 years (This is a fixed-term position for 3 years or longer)

    The Department of Civil, Coastal, & Environmental Engineering at the University of South Alabama is
    seeking to fill a funded Graduate Research Assistantship for a student interested in pursuing a Master of
    Science in Civil Engineering degree, with concentrations in geotechnical engineering. The initial
    appointment is for one year and renewal will be contingent upon quarterly performance reviews. The

    Position
    The successful candidate will be appointed to a Graduate Research
    Assistant position at the University of South Alabama (USA) in the
    Department of Civil, Coastal, & Environmental Engineering and will
    be expected to pursue a Master of Science in Civil Engineering
    (MSCE), in the specialty areas of geotechnical/structural
    engineering. The University of South Alabama is a public university
    in Mobile, Alabama and the campus is located 30 miles from the
    white‐sand beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. The department is
    housed in the state‐of‐the‐art Shelby Hall opened in 2012. The
    MSCE program at USA focuses on civil engineering in the coastal
    environment and department faculty research expertise includes
    the traditional areas of water resources, environmental,
    transportation, geotechnical and structural engineering as well as
    coastal engineering.
    Research
    The research responsibilities of the student will be to assist in a funded research project focused on
    developing and improving the design aspects of driven piles in the Southeast Region of the US. The project
    requires field instrumentation, data collection and database development, numerical analysis, and
    interpretation of results. Additional project details will be made available at an appropriate time. The ideal
    candidate will:
    1) Have demonstrated knowledge of common data analysis software (e.g. ArcGIS, Microsoft Access)
    2) Have demonstrated experience working in a laboratory and construction sites
    3) Be physically capable of performing their duties in the laboratory facility
    4) Be able to travel to meetings and conferences
    5) Be legally able to attend school in the United States without sponsorship or travel assistance

    Serves as an independent scientist performing post-doctoral research as part of a multi- disciplinary research team studying inactivation of a broad spectrum of pathogens and parasites using a family of novel, biodegradable disinfectants. The range of organisms include bacterial endospores and vegetative cells (planktonic and on surfaces), viruses, and helminth eggs. The work requires a professional knowledge of biological sciences to include microbiology, molecular biology, and biochemistry.

    1. Participates in designing, planning, and organizing research strategies to be used in projects. Independently designs and runs experiments to study inactivation of pathogens and parasites using biodegradable disinfectants. Prepares detailed plan of research and required resources for supervisory review, to include designation of research topics and projects for undergraduate research. Supervises and provides technical guidance to undergraduate researchers. Ensures adherence to safety regulations, laboratory protocols and departmental standards.
