A PhD candidate is solicited in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The candidate is expected to carry out multidisciplinary research work in the Microelectronics and Sensors Research Laboratory headed by Prof. Mohammad Madani. The position is expected to be fully funded (stipend & tuition for up to four years) and are available from fall 2015, once the suitable candidate passes the university application requirements.

Students at the B.S. or M.Sc. level Electrical Engineering with background in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering are encouraged to apply. The project is a part of a large collaborative Industrial Partnership Programme between AMOLF, Wageningen University, University of Amsterdam and Unilever Research, entitled Hybrid soft materials: from physical mechanisms to designer products. The overall goal of the programme is to understand the physics of the assembly and visco-elastic properties of hybrid networks, consisting of mixtures of stiff and soft elements, which leads to the rich and complex multiscale physics that characterize real food products. The understanding of the design principles and the relation between the molecular, microscopic and mechanical properties of hybrid networks will be used in the design of new, improved systems, in particular new food products.



As part of this programme we are looking for a PhD student interested in the development and application of advanced magnetic resonance (imaging) methods to study the behaviour of food materials under shear and stress.



Job description

The PhD student will develop, validate and implement magnetic resonance approaches for non-invasive assessment of hybrid biopolymer network formation and degradation under dynamic conditions such as stress and shear. Velocimetric measurements under shear (RheoMRI) will be combined with nanoprobe (PFGNMR) diffusometry to provide a view on biopolymer network formation/degradation at sub-µm scale.



Location
The postdoc will be stationed primarily at Unilever Research in Vlaardingen, whilst also spending time at Wageningen University on a regular basis. The work will be supervised by Prof. J. van Duynhoven (Unilever, Wageningen University) and by Dr. H. Van As (Wageningen University).

Required qualifications:

The candidate should have an MSc degree (or the equivalent) in Physics or Physical Chemistry, with a strong background in nuclear magnetic resonance techniques applied to structure-function relationships of materials. Experience with food materials and/or magnetic resonance imaging would be an advantage. Good communication skills in English are required.



Terms of employment

You will be employed by the FOM Foundation for a fixed period of one year. Your salary will be up to a maximum of 3,922 euro gross per month, depending on your level of experience. The salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8 percent and an end-of-year bonus of 8.33 percent.

The PhD student will work in the CHEC Research Centre that is mainly focused in the fields of Chemical Reaction Engineering and Combustion, emphasizing high-temperature processes, formation and control of harmful emissions catalysis, particle technology and product design. Thermal gasification and pyrolysis of biomass is one the Research Centre’s main field of studies.

Thermal gasification provides highly efficient production of combined heat and power, biofuels and chemicals, and offers the possibility for utilization of a wide range of biomass residues. The successful candidate will work on improved gas cleaning techniques in biomass gasification and study oxygen blown gasification.

The applicant should preferably have qualifications within the following areas

Strong background in chemistry/analytical chemistry or mechanical engineering
Knowledge about any of the listed fields will be beneficial: biomass conversion technologies, biomass gasification, combustion, thermal processes
Experience and a great interest in experimental work is essential
Great analytical skills and the ability to work independently towards research goals
Fluency in speaking, reading and writing English is important
