PhD fellowship position in «Physical effect of load fluctuations in rivers and reservoirs» CEDREN (IVT 131/09)

The Norwegian government has established eight national research centres on climate friendly energy generation, one of which is the Centre for Environmental Design of Renewable Energy (CEDREN). In order to ensure environmental design of existing and new renewable energy production, interdisciplinary collaboration is necessary, alongside close collaboration and interaction between the R & D institutions, the industry and management authorities.

SINTEF, NTNU and NINA are research partners and leading national and international institutions and companies are partners (i.e. Statkraft, Statnett, Hydro, Sira-Kvina, NVE, EBL etc). Many national and international research organizations are collaborating with the Centre for example NIVA and LFI in Norway, KTH and SLU in Sweden and BOKU in Austria.

We are also collaborating closely with other relevant FME centres, such as Norwegian Research Centre for Offshore Wind Technology (NOWITECH) and Norwegian Centre for Offshore Wind Energy (NORCOWE).

More than 50 professors and researchers will be engaged in research at CEDREN together with a significant number of PhD and postdocs. See www.cedren.no for more details.

CEDREN will engage at least 15 PhDs and PostDocs, and 9 of the positions are already established. Due to lack of qualified candidates, this is the second announcement for three of the Ph D positions. The PhD positions are open for the first period of the research program 2010-2013.

Physical effects of load fluctuations in rivers and reservoirs
Better understanding of the effects of rapid flow fluctuations is necessary for planning hydro peaking operations and for designing hydraulic structures. The candidate will identify the state of art regarding physical effects of rapid flow variations. She/he will develop flow scenarios to monitor and analyze the effects of rapid flow variations in the field or laboratory. The goal of the study is to develop methods for predicting the effects of fluctuating flows, to develop guidelines and to propose mitigation measures.

    Suitable background/Qualifications:
The candidate should have a masters degree in hydraulic engineering, fluid mechanics or similar. The applicant must have profound knowledge of hydraulics and sediment transport around hydraulic structures which are typical for hydropower plants. In addition she/he should have experience from working scientifically in the field or laboratory.

PhD research fellowship position in Organic Chemistry (NT-62/09)

At the Department of Chemistry, NTNU there is vacant one PhD research fellowship position in Organic Chemistry for three years.

The person awarded the stipend is going to work with studies of Supramolecular- and synthetic organic chemistry. Supramolecular chemistry refers to the area of chemistry that focuses on chemical systems assembled from discrete molecules, held together by non-covalent forces. Understanding the non-covalent interactions is crucial to understanding many biological processes from cell structure. Biological systems are often the inspiration for supramolecular research. Included in the studies is the synthesis of new optically active amphiphilic compounds and the elucidation of how they assemble into micelles and vesicles, including cell-like structures, and the chemical and structural properties of such assemblies. The catalytic effects of the aggregates for organic reactions in water are also to be studied. An integral part of the planned work will deal with the development of new reagents and reactions, including reaction mechanistic studies. The research group is collaborating with groups at Norwegian and foreign universities. Applicants with a strong background in organic chemistry will be preferred.

More information about the stipend may be obtained by contacting professor Per Carlsen, E-mail: per.carlsen@chem.ntnu.no. Telephone: +47 73593968. Home pages: www.chemtalk.com

    PhD student position in photoelectrochemistry
at the Department of Materials Chemistry.
    Research area: Inorganic Materials Chemistry
We are looking for a motivated PhD candidate to join a project in photoelectrochemistry (PEC). PEC study focuses on the conversion of photonic (solar) energy to chemical energy. The PEC energy conversion efficiency is determined to a great extent by the properties of photo-electrodes, especially photo-anodes. The aim of the project is to prepare highly efficient nanostructured semiconductor photoanodes, and set up a PEC device that is efficient, durable and stable in practical applications. By using state-of-the-art nanofabrication and characterization methods, the parameters, which determine the total cross-section of the PEC process, will be identified and scrutinized in a systematic way. The parameters include size, morphology and arrangement of the photoanode nanomaterials, which can be controlled accurately and varied intentionally in preparation. This high degree of control aids the understanding of the mechanisms behind, which can further optimize the photon efficiency. Both nanofabrication and characterization can be carried out at Department of Materials Chemistry and the Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala University.
The applicant is expected to have a Masters degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Materials or Physics. Experience in one or several of the following subjects is beneficial: solid state chemistry, optical characterization, nanofabrication and characterization, electrochemistry. You should be good at communicating and teaching in English, and also able to work independently. A PhD position normally includes 4 years of full-time studies. Department duties such as teaching can amount to a maximum of 20%.
Salary is based on local guidelines at Uppsala University.
The application should include a statement of research interest and relevant experience, CV, official transcript of records for the courses and thesis, a copy of Master thesis, published article or relevant materials, if available. Also, letter(s) of recommendation should be included.
