Catalysis for Sustainable Processes - Conversion of CO2 to dimethyl carbonate

    50000403v1558
    Promoter: Paolo Pescarmona

Description: In the Centre for Surface Chemistry and Catalysis of the University of Leuven (K.U. Leuven), we are looking for a motivated and talented Ph.D. researcher for a 4-year project on the development of heterogeneous catalysts for the conversion of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide to dimethyl carbonate.

Carbon dioxide is produced in large amounts from fuel combustion and represents the main contribution to greenhouse gases. Therefore, CO2 emissions are considered a serious threat to the environment. On the other hand, this implies that carbon dioxide is an easily available, abundant, economical and renewable carbon source. In this project, the target is to identify a suitable heterogeneous catalyst for the conversion of CO2 to dimethyl carbonate. Dimethyl carbonate is a versatile compound with applications as solvent, as fuel additive and as eco friendly alternative reagent for methylation and carbonylation reactions. High-Throughput Experimentation techniques will be employed to enable the rapid and efficient preparation and testing of a large set of heterogeneous catalysts in different reaction conditions, including the use of supercritical CO2.

Key words: Catalysis - Sustainable Processes - High-Throughput Experimentation

    PhD position in Microbioreactor Development

The Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at DTU coordinates a project of the strategic research council entitled ’Towards robust fermentation processes by targeting population heterogeneity at microscale’, in collaboration with the Department of Systems Biology and the Department of Photonics Engineering at DTU, the University of Copenhagen (KU) and Aalborg University (AAU). The Department now seeks a PhD student to continue development of the microbioreactor platform in the frame of the above-mentioned project.

Traditionally, a microbial population has been considered homogeneous in optimisation studies of fermentation processes. However, research has shown that a typical microbial population in a fermentor is heterogeneous. There are indications that such heterogeneity may be both beneficial (facilitates quick adaptation to new conditions) and harmful (reduces yields and productivities) for the robustness of the fermentation process. A thorough investigation of population heterogeneity has become possible due to continued technological developments in genetics and molecular biology (reporter systems), flow cytometry and microfluidics (microbioreactors).

The ultimate goal of the over-all research project is to be able to control population heterogeneity in industrial cultivations. Research activities will focus on constructing reporter systems for cell growth and productivity at the single cell level for industrially relevant model organisms, and the distribution of these properties for the population will be analyzed. The effect of cultivation parameters on growth and productivity will be investigated via experiments in microbioreactors. Finally, experimental results at the microscale will be extrapolated to labscale and pilotscale, and will be supported by combining computational fluid dynamics with population balance models to simulate and study the mechanisms governing population heterogeneity.

The PhD project that is offered has focus on extending the current microbioreactor platform (chemostat cultivation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae), with special focus on including additional on-line measurements in the microbioreactors. The project will be a collaboration between the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering and the Department of Systems Biology at DTU, and includes a considerable amount of lab work: most focus will be on design and fabrication of microbioreactors that include NIR spectroscopy or Raman spectroscopy as an on-line measurement, supplemented with fermentation experiments to test the microbioreactor designs. Depending on the interest of the candidate, experimental work will be supplemented with development of data-driven and/or first-principles based models to assist with the interpretation of the obtained experimental data.

    Qualifications
Candidates for the position should have a master's degree in chemical or mechanical engineering. Beside a strong commitment for research, the PhD student should ideally have an interest in fermentation and on-line monitoring. The position offers an opportunity to work in a dynamic multi-disciplinary research group with strong focus on gaining improved understanding of the detailed mechanisms governing population heterogeneity in a fermentation. In total, seven PhD students collaborate on this research effort, which ensures a highly stimulating working environment.

In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to:

    • Relevance of background experience
    • Proficiency in written and spoken English, and good communication skills.
    Approval and enrolment

Synthesis of novel functionalised or expanded oxacalixarenes and application in supramolecular chemistry

    50000403v1537

    Promoter: Wim Dehaen

    details
Description: Calix[n]arenes are [1n]metacyclophanes that are relatively easy to prepare and functionalize, and, due to their high level of preorganization, they have been widely used as molecular platforms in supramolecular chemistry. Heteracalixarenes, in which the carbon linkages between the aromatic units are replaced by heteroatoms, are far less prevalent, although they inherently possess different properties that might expand the scope of classical calixarene chemistry.
In previous work, we have explored the synthesis of oxacalix[m]arene[m]pyrimidines (m = 2–6) by nucleophilic aromatic substitution (SNAr) reactions of variously substituted m-dihydroxybenzenes and 4,6-dihalopyrimidines. Depending on the SNAr conditions, either a mixture of oxacalix[n]arenes (calix[4]- up to calix[12]arene), could be prepared or the oxacalix[4]arene could be synthesized selectively in a high yield (up to 80%).
In this project, a (ring size) selective synthesis of oxacalix[m]arene[m]pyrimidines (m > 2) will be pursued by nucleophilic aromatic substitution. The resulting calixarenes will have two bridging atoms between the aromatic moieties.
A second approach of structure modification is the intraannular substitution of the oxacalixarenes we obtained earlier by lithiation and electrophilic addition.
The conformations of the novel oxacalix[n]arenes in the solid state will be investigated by X-ray diffraction studies.
Binding studies of ssubstituted calixarenes systems in the presence of selected guests will be carried out by different spectroscopuc techniques.
