PhD position in Petrology and Geochemistry

at the Department of Earth Sciences. Starting date: August 2010 or as agreed upon.
Magmas are one of the most important probes into the Earth’s interior. As magma travels from its source through the Earth’s crust to finally erupt at the surface it records the lithologies with which it interacted along the way. This project will use a combined petrological, textural and in-situ isotope approach on whole rocks and feldspar phenocrysts from the porphyritic lavas of the Faroe Islands, to unravel the chemical changes experienced by the magmas on their traverse through the crust (e.g. recorded within core-rim variations). Employing crustal contamination systematics in the basalts as a probe into the sub-Faroese crust, this project will characterise the composition and broad litho-structure of the crustal rocks beneath the Faroese basalt pile. A combination of in-situ isotope stratigraphy in minerals and thermo-barometric modeling will allow petrological and geochemical mapping of considerable depth variations within the sub-basalt basement and will identify the position of sedimentary units between basement and basalt cover.
The candidate should have a background in petrology and geochemical analysis and should be willing to travel to the field localities and to analytical facilities in Sweden and abroad. Special attention will be given to candidates with experience in igneous petrology, in-situ mineral analysis, thermobarometry and/or isotope geochemistry.
Research directions within the program include traditional and experimental petrology, high-temperature geochemistry, mineralogy, diagenetic processes, theoretical and tectonic modeling. Apart from standard equipment, an electron microprobe, as well as hydrothermal and high-pressure experimental laboratories (autoclave and diamond anvil cell), a tectonic analogue laboratory and an SEM exist amongst the facilities (http://www.geo.uu.se/mpt/).
Proficiency in oral and written English are required. The PhD position is for a maximum of four years and may include departmental duties at a level of at most 20% (typically teaching). In order to be eligible for this position, the candidate has to be admitted, or be in the process of being admitted, as a PhD student at Uppsala University and therefore is required to have a Masters of Science or equivalent qualification.
Uppsala University is an equal opportunity employer and encourages female candidates to apply.

10/057 - PhD position Membrane Dehydration of Pressurized Carbon Dioxide Streams

The Faculty of Science and Technology (700 faculty members, 1100 students) offers a range of bachelor and master courses (NanoTechnology, Applied Physics, Chemical Engineering and Technical Medicine). The faculty’s research is organized in three of the university’s interdisciplinary research institutes: MESA+, MIRA, and IMPACT. These institutes increase the vitality of research by enabling collaboration between programs and disciplines, by providing shared facilities, and by attracting funding for joint projects. They also provide a conduit to industrial and other external partners.

PhD position Membrane Dehydration of Pressurized Carbon Dioxide Streams

    Project
Aim of this project is the continuous dehydration of pressurized carbon dioxide streams, using water selective membranes. We are looking for a PhD candidate that will prepare, develop, and evaluate the performance of different membranes (organic/inorganic) for the removal of water vapor from near/super critical CO2.

Industrial drying processes are generally based on the supply of heat, and are inherently energy-inefficient. Alternative processes for drying include the use of compressed fluids, such as carbon dioxide. Continuous operation of such drying processes requires efficient subsequent dehydration of the pressurized stream. We propose the use of water selective membranes for this purpose.

Main challenge of the project is to develop membrane technology with adequate separation performance (high flux and selectivity), under the relevant high pressure/low pH conditions, over a sufficiently long time. The project is very multidisciplinary in nature, covering for instance materials synthesis and characterization, mass transport studies, and process design.

The research will be carried out at the Membrane Technology Group of the University of Twente within the framework of a PhD project supervised by dr. Nieck E. Benes (www.membrane.nl), in close coorporation with the Centre of Excellence for Water Technology (Wetsus, www.wetsus.nl), Feyecon B.V. (www.feyecon.com), and various other companies.

    Requirements
You should have a M.Sc. degree in Chemical Technology, Physics, or similar. Preference will be given to applicants who have a strong affinity with membrane technology. Furthermore you should have excellent proficiency in English, in writing and in word.

    Conditions of employment
The assignment is for 4 years, with a go/no-go assessment at the end of the first year. The candidates are expected to finish the project with a PhD thesis and disseminate the results through patents (if applicable), publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences. Your starting salary will be € 2042, - in the first year and up to € 2612, - gross per month in the last year.
    Applications
For more information and application, please contact Dr.Ir N.E. Benes (+31-53-489-2983; n.e.benes@utwente.nl. Applications should consist of an application/motivation letter as well as detailed CV (resume). Please send you application before June 1st, 2010. Vacancy number 10/057.

Open PhD position in the Nanoparticles Self-Assembly Group
The newly founded Nanoparticles Self-Assembly Group at the Adolphe Merkel Institute,
University of Fribourg (Switzerland), is searching for outstanding, highly motivated, energetic
PhD candidates, starting from January 1st, 2012.
There is currently one available position.
    1) Modeling of nanoparticles self-assembly in the presence of external field, and in
    particular of flow fields
Job description. Suspensions of spherical nanoparticles find a variety of applications in the
preparation and processing of polymeric and ceramic materials. Exploiting their self-assembly
in order to generate structures and materials with controlled features is one of the challenges
of nanotechnology. The use of external force fields is a powerful tool to control the
mechanism and structure of nanoparticles assemblies. In particular, flow fields have attracted
the interest of scientists, and are commonly used in industrial applications. Nevertheless,
understanding the interactions of concentrated dispersion of particles with the flow field has
    proved to be challenging.
The objective of the work is to perform detailed simulations of self-assembly of particles at
high concentrations in the presence of flow fields as well as other force field, in order to gain
a deep understanding of the dynamics of the assembly process.
Qualifications. The ideal candidate should have a Master or equivalent degree in physics,
chemical physics, (chemical) engineering, or material science, should possess excellent
computer programming skills, a deep knowledge in numerical methods, and should be fluent
in English, both written and spoken.
Applications, including a CV, and the contact information of at least two references should be
sent electronically to Prof. Dr. Marco Lattuada (current E-mail address: marco.lattuada@chem.ethz.ch).
