The Adolphe Merkle Institute (
www.am-institute.ch) is a recently established independent center of
competence associated with the University of Fribourg. AMI prides itself with an unusual blend of
fundamental and application-oriented research within a multidisciplinary setting and strives to be a leader
in interdisciplinary research on soft nano-science. To complete our team, we are searching
PhD Candidates in the field of Polymer Chemistry
Qualified applicants must have a Masters Degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry (preferably organic synthesis),
Materials or Polymer Science and wish to pursue independent research involving small-molecule synthesis,
polymer synthesis and characterization, and mechanical analysis.
Two positions are available starting May 1st. The successful candidates will contribute to a cutting-edge
research program focused on mechanochemistry in polymeric materials. The program targets the synthesis
and exploration of a new family of bio-inspired, mechanically responsive polymers in which mechanical
stress provides the activation energy for pre-programmed chemical reactions, which will be used to bestow
polymers with unusual and previously unavailable functionalities.
Close collaboration with the other members of the Institute and the Faculty of Science is expected. AMI
offers highly competitive working conditions, an outstanding infrastructure and a generous salary.
