Production of a novel platform chemical and potential biofuel with yeast

    50000403v1608
    Promoter: Johan Thevelein

    details
Description: The production of bioethanol for use as transport fuel is considered a highly attractive short-term alternative for the use of fuels derived from fossil reserves like petroleum and natural gas. Ethanol, however, has a number of disadvantages such as its low energy content, miscibility with water and hygroscopic character. Higher alcohols and certain similar organic molecules lack these disadvantages: they have a higher energy content, are only poorly soluble in water and are not hygroscopic. Their poor solubility in water may allow other methods of recovery compared to distillation, which is used for ethanol and is an important cost factor in the production process of ethanol. Higher alcohols, however, are more toxic than ethanol to living cells and therefore their production with microbes up to levels that are no longer soluble in water is problematic. In this project, a specific mutant strain of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae will be used that produces unusually large amounts of an organic molecule that may serve as an alternative biofuel. The compound has a higher energy content than ethanol, is poorly soluble in water, not hygroscopic and moreover, it is not toxic. The compound can also be used for other applications and may serve as a platform chemical. In this project, metabolic engineering will be performed of the mutant yeast strain in order to further enhance the production of the compound and lower the production of ethanol. Small-scale fermentations under different conditions will be used for characterization of the production of the chemical and of the other yeast fermentation (by)products.

Sperm competition and the economy of sperm use in insect societies

    50000403v1528
    Promoter: Johan Billen

    details
Description: We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student to join the Laboratory of Entomology at the University of Leuven, Belgium (http://www.kuleuven.be/bio/ento) to work on a project on sperm competition and the economy of sperm use in insect societies. Insect societies such as ants, bees and wasps are remarkable in that queens store the sperm of the males they mate with in a sperm storage organ, in which they keep the sperm alive for their entire lives, sometimes for up to 20 years, thereby putting a strong selective pressure on them to make economic use of this sperm. The main aim of the project are to determine whether multiple mating in some species might lead to increased sperm competition and a reduced economy of sperm use, and whether there is antagonistic coevolution between the queen and the stored sperm over the fertilisation rate of eggs.
The project would be carried out under the joint supervision of Dr. Tom Wenseleers and Prof. Johan Billen.

Candidates should have an interest in evolutionary biology and functional morphology. Prior research experience in working with social insects would be a bonus, but is not strictly required. Funding for both salary and consumables for 3 years is available through a grant from the Fund for Scientific Research Flanders. The starting date of the project can be negotiated (between 1 October 2009 and 1 January 2010). All nationalities are eligible. For details on the formal applicatiton procedure please contact Prof. Johan Billen at johan.billen@bio.kuleuven.be.

At the National Food Institute a 3-year Ph.D position in quantitative microbiology is available from December 15.

The successful candidate will be placed at National Food Institute, DTU, to work in the Research Group for Epidemiology and Risk Modelling, in close collaboration with the Research Group for Food Hygiene and other research groups in the Institute. Temporary international work placement will be stimulated.

    Job description
The aim of this PhD project is to explore and develop effective methods for the analysis of quanti-tative microbiological data for the use in quantitative microbiological risk assessment (QMRA). The PhD student will perform a literature study on the application of commonly used statistical methods in food microbiology, and analyze the use of different methods like traditional statistics, maximum likelihood estimation and Bayesian analysis.

The basics of microbiological experiments involving enumeration will be modelled and simulated, to investigate the “cell counting dynamics”, and check the impact of beliefs and assumptions on the dynamics of bacterial cells and populations, as well as the consequences of experimental methods. Next, the PhD student will study methods to analyze microbial recovery and censored data in microbiology. Special challenges may be the development of novel predictive models meeting the specific needs of QMRA, related to variability and uncertainty, and the development of analytic methods to use quantitative molecular data.

    • A broad interest in different scientific disciplines.
    • Fluency in English
    • Good social skills, innovative and interested in communicating research results
    Approval and Enrolment

The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

The Department of Pharmacy offers a stimulating work environment in research and teaching in the Pharmacy disciplines. Our research and teaching programs focus on our core disciplines, i.e. biopharmaceutics, pharmaceutical formulation and technology, pharmaceutical physical chemistry, pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacoeconomy and pharmacy practice research. Information about the department and our research groups can be found on our web site http://www.farmfak.uu.se/farm/.
The position now opened is placed in the research group Pharmaceutical Physical Chemistry, the research of which aims at improved knowledge on tools and systems for efficient identification and administration of peptide and protein drugs. The research is interdisciplinary, including physical chemistry, biotechnology, and materials science, and is characterized by extensive scientific collaborations with research groups both in Sweden and internationally.
The PhD student will work within the project Interaction between amphiphilic peptides and complex biological membranes. Amphiphilic peptides have significant potential as drugs within a number of areas, e.g., as novel antibiotics or against inflammatory diseases.
