    The Vision Science group in collaboration with interdisciplinary Photonics Laboratories at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) is seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to pursue a project on using the latest advancements in digital technology to develop a portable ocular imaging device. The incumbent will be exposed to a range of challenges including design (hardware), programming and trialing the end product. The ideal candidate would have (i) experience in common programming languages such as Matlab, Python, C++, java (ii) understands concepts of Java programing, (iii) acute understanding of the biological questions being addressed by the supervisors; (iv) experience with optics; and (iv) experience and desire to disseminate the image analysis know-how through workshops, collaboration, and international consortia. The PhD candidate is expected to innovate novel image analysis methods when the need arises, and share the methods through peer-reviewed publications and open source channels. This position will suit a candidate with a background in computer science, software engineering, medical imaging, physics or related field.     Computational Biologist (ETH Zurich/ Boehringer Ingelheim Pharma/ metabolism partnership)

    The Institute Molecular Health Science and the Institute of Food, Nutrition and Health of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, in partnership with Boehringer Ingelheim Pharma, are seeking a Computational Biologist (ETH Zurich/ Boehringer Ingelheim Pharma/ metabolism partnership)


    to support the research partnership in the study of metabolic disorders. The partnership has generated substantial genomics datasets from a variety of animal models and ex-vivo samples. The computational biologist will focus on the use of advanced computational techniques such as machine learning, deconvolution, and systems biology to leverage this data to identify novel pathways, therapeutic concepts and biomarkers. Moreover, there will be a focus on creating publicly available deconvolution tools and organizing existing proprietary and public information in a structured database. The candidate will work in close collaboration and joint supervision between the involved ETH and BI teams.
    Responsibilities include: (1) Interface/collaborate regularly with collaborators in the ETH and BI experimental groups as well as the ETH and BI computational biology groups (2) Evaluate and experiment with different advanced computation techniques such as classification, machine learning, gene interaction networks, deconvolution for the identification of biomarkers and targets also in cell specific contexts (3) Perform in depth analysis of multiple current and future NGS RNA-Seq datasets to help undertake meta-analysis across different studies in humans and mouse models. (4) Work on translational approaches to apply what is learned from the mouse models to humans (e.g. identification of translatable biomarkers); Keep track of relevant literature and integrate any publicly available relevant datasets that can enhance the interpretation of the results (5) Design and setup a public analysis server that can allow other labs to perform cell deconvolution for their own datasets (e.g. using R/Shiny) (6) Generate and present results from computational biology analysis (NGS mRNASeq, Pathway analysis, Biomarkers, Gene Prioritization, etc.) to lab members and BI collaborators (7) Participate in the publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and at scientific congresses.
    You hold a PhD degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, molecular biology or biochemistry.You have excellent knowledge and good understanding of both molecular biology & applied bioinformatics and you have a willingness to appreciate and understand the biological questions being tackled.You have good programming skills and can adapt to different script languages (R, Perl, Python) and are familiar with the Linux operating system. You know how to deal with large datasets (e.g. from next generation sequencing applications and gene/protein interaction networks). You have a familiarity and practical experience with bioinformatics tools and databases (sequence analysis and/or resources at NCBI & EBI). Your fluency in English both in writing and in speaking will be required to work satisfactorily in an international working environment. You are characterized by a focused working style, flexibility as well as innovative thinking, problem solving and analytical skills. You are a reliable team player with excellent organization and communication skills, and with a high degree of motivation

    Aufgabenbereich

    The appointed post-doc will help with student mentoring and will conduct experimental research on all aspects of radiotracer development. Specific areas include: radiolabelling and characterisation of radiotracers, protein expression and bioconjugation chemistry, cellular-based assays and PET imaging in vivo using animal models of human cancer

    Anforderungen

    Candidates must hold a Master's (MBiol, MSci or equivalent) degree and a PhD (or equivalent) in biology or biochemistry. Successful candidates will be ambitious, creative, and highly motivated, with an outstanding record of academic achievement. Essential requirements are:
    • First class Bachelor's and Master's degrees (or equivalent qualifications) in biology or biochemistry
    • PhD in biology or biochemistry
    • An excellent record of productivity as evidenced by academic awards and peer-reviewed publications

    Ideal candidates will have extensive knowledge and experience working with human cancer cell lines, as well as in-depth knowledge about protein expression and characterisation. Prior experience working with mouse models of human cancer is desirable and candidates with Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations (FELASA) accredited animal training (level B or higher) are encouraged to apply. Experience working with radioactive cellular assay and/or animal imaging (radioactive PET/SPECT, CT, MRI or optical methods) is an advantage

    PhD-Program Molecular, Cellular and Clinical Allergology, MCCA, of the Medical University of Vienna and the Veterinary University of Vienna, Austria. Students who decide to pursue their PhD degree within the MCCA program will have the exceptional possibility of obtaining profound insights into cutting-edge clinical medicine while at the same time becoming deeply immersed into pertinent questions of molecular and cellular allergology. Depending on the track the actual PhD-student’s project will be located in, aspects of either molecular, cellular or clinical allergology will be the dominating theme. Compulsory training within the two complementary tracks will round-up education and training of individual students and ensure that a holistic view of the entire discipline, i.e. allergology, is obtained eventually

    Formal eligibility criteria:

    • Hold a master of science (MSc) or equivalent university degree (final degree) in a subject-relevant or -related diploma study, e.g. biological sciences, chemistry, medicine or a related discipline at the point of enrollment (the degree needs to be obtained at the latest before enrollment in the MCCA program) and fulfill the admission criteria for PhD-students of the MUV as documented by transcript and degree certificate.
    • Have a fluent command of English (written and spoken) and, unless they are native speakers, should document their proficiency in English (TOEFL test, GRE test, or similar). The knowledge of the German language is not required, however, interested international students will be offered opportunities to take German language courses
    • Provide a motivation letter explaining their commitment to science
    • Provide a detailed curriculum vitae including scholarships, prizes, awards and high school degree transcripts (incl. presentations at meetings/publications if already applicable at this early stage of the career)

    Letters of recommendation:

    At least two letters of recommendation from persons qualified to describe and evaluate the applicant’s professional, academic and personal qualifications are required. Applicants are advised to solicit only recommendations from individuals who are familiar with their academic achievements and who can judge the applicant’s potential for success in the research areas relevant to the MCCA-PhD program. Please be aware of the fact that applications lacking the appropriate number of letters of recommendation cannot be processed further.     Selection procedure and criteria for PhD students:
    Initially, a technical check regarding the fulfillment of all formal criteria will be performed by the Administrator in direct consultation with the Speaker. Should the technical evaluation reveal flaws or missing items candidates will be contacted by the Administrator and asked to complete their applications in due time. Applications still not fulfilling the formal criteria after this cross-check will be excluded from further evaluations.
    If eligible according to the above minimal criteria, applications will be ranked by the Admission Committee (all Faculty Members) according to a detailed and highly formalized scoring-process, evaluating academic credentials, personal traits, career objectives and the applicants ability to contribute to the further development of the art:

    Wir bieten

    The Institute of Animal Nutrition, Vetsuisse Faculty, University of Zurich, is accepting applications from qualified individuals for a three-year residency in animal nutrition. This program will begin September 1st, 2017.
    There is no tuition for the program. Professional liability insurance is provided, but health insurance (approx. CHF 2000 /year) are the responsibility of the individual. Twenty days of annual leave are available. The average annual salary is CHF 47‘000 per year.
    Residents completing this program will be eligible for the ECVCN (European College for Veterinary and Comparative Nutrition) board examination.

    Requirements: Candidates must be fluent in spoken German as well as written and spoken English. All applicants must be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in their country of origin, and priority is given to those candidates that fulfill the following:
    1) DVM Degree
    2) 1.5 year of general internship (small or large animal medicine) or a comparable training– to be acknowledged by the ECVCN-credential committee.
    3) Practical experience in small animal/large animal medicine. General clinical competency is essential.
    The residency program lasts at least 2 1/2 years. The first year is addicted to a profound education in clinical nutrition. For this, the candidate has to spend most of his/her time at the nutrition consultation service and feed analyses as well as at the clinics (small animals; large animals; horses; ambulatoric clinic and herd management unit).
    During the training, the candidate should work out a proposal for a scientific study and start the research as soon as possible. The candidate has to publish at least two peer reviewed publications (one of this written in English) during the training (at least one publication should come out of the proposed project). Besides, the trainee has to do nutritional support furthermore. First results of the work should be presented at international meetings.
    During the three years of training scientific work has to be completed and publications written. In the third year of training nutrition support and feed analyses have to be managed independently.

    The resident is encouraged to attend and present at a national or international conference every year, as well as attend lectures or seminars in the Veterinary Faculty or on University campus. The resident will work under the supervision of senior faculty members and will be responsible for (1) participating in the daily activities of the consulting services of the Institute including primary case responsibilities and case rounds, (2) participating in regular visits to farms, (3) providing assistance in instruction and supervision of veterinary students as well as doctoral thesis students, (4) presenting one 15-30 minute seminar to the College each year and active participation in nutritional journal clubs, book clubs rounds and rounds.
    A major aim of this residency program is to graduate veterinarians who are eligible to take the ECVCN board examinations.

    Program Structure – WRF Postdoctoral Fellows



    • Will be chosen by an outstanding external selection committee
    • Will be supported for three years at a research institution in Washington state
    • Will choose the laboratories and start date to conduct their research

    • Videoconference interviews will begin in late-August 2017 for candidates whose applications progress
    • Following the completion of all video interviews, an in-person interview will be offered to candidates then selected for our shortlist. WRF will provide a travel allowance for these interviews, which are currently scheduled for October 2017 in Seattle
    • Successful candidates will be notified that they have received a WRF Postdoctoral Fellowship in November 2017
