Depth profiling of the glass transition dynamics and diffusion in ultra-thin polymer films using dielectric probes

    50000403v316
    Promoter: Michael Wübbenhorst

    details
Description: Glass forming liquids show deviations from their cooperative bulk-dynamics (finite size effects) when they are geometrically confined to dimensions comparable to the intrinsic length of cooperativity. Ultra-thin polymer films represent an attractive system for the study of size effects on the glass transition dynamics because of large reported Tg-shifts (> 70 K) and the ease with which nm-thick samples can be prepared.

This project aims to investigate the position dependence in the glass transition and related dynamics in ultrathin polymer films by employing “dielectric probes” or labels at specific depths in supported or freely-standing polymer films. Polymer films with a desired probe concentration profile will be achieved by assembling multilayers or, alternatively, by employing organic molecular beam deposition. Dielectric spectroscopy will be the principal technique to gather depth-specific dynamic information, which is complemented by structural investigations using ellipsometry and scanning probe techniques.
The ultimate goal of the project is to relate experimental mobility profiles in terms of intrinsic dynamic length scales, specific polymer-interface interactions and polymer conformation issues.

This position is related to the project “Depth profiling of the glass transition dynamics and diffusion in ultra-thin polymer films using dielectric probe techniques” and is open for a starting PhD student. The successful candidate should preferably have a Master degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Materials Science or Physical Chemistry.

Exploration and exploitation of exotic physical phenomena for the efficient harvesting, storage, release and transformation of thermal solar energy

    50000403v1649
    Promoter: Christ Glorieux

    details
Description: Except for nuclear technology based approaches, basically all existing energy harvesting techniques exploit the abundant energy supplied by the sun. The synthesis millions of years ago by natural processes of highly energetic complex molecules in biological materials and fuels that are combusted today was directly or indirectly based on solar energy. Nowadays, photovoltaic solar cells are converting a fraction of all available solar energy directly into electric power. A major obstacle with respect to the exploitation of solar energy is that, contrary to electric energy, it’s most abundant form, i.e. solar heat, is often not available at the right place (close to the user) on the right time. Also, the temperature of most naturally heated objects lies below 80C, making it not efficient to convert their thermal energy into e.g. mechanical energy. This project puts focus on the physics behind and efficiency improvement of heat harvesting, heat storage and heat release, and of the use of advanced thermal conductivity switches for improved magnetocaloric heat pumping and thermoelectric and pyroelectric energy harvesting. The research involves the design and implementation of physics experiments, theoretical and modelling and numerical simulation of the physical phenomena involved, and data processing.

    “Vortex matter in two-component nano-superconductors”

    details
Description: This research will be carried out in the framework of the METHUSALEM NANO Programme.
We shall investigate nanostructured single-component (reference system, low-Tc superconductors) and two-component superconductors with antidot lattices of different geometries and sizes. Moreover, the two-component superconductivity will be modelled by using the S1/S2 bi-layers where S1 and S2 are two superconductors with different coherence lengths and the London penetration depths. For that purpose Al/Pb, Al/Nb bi-layers will be used. The recent theoretical predictions of the non-composite vortex state will be experimentally verified. We shall fabricate antidot lattices by using modern techniques (e-beam lithography, in collaboration with IMEC, self-assembly, self-organized templates). Integrated response techniques, advanced local techniques with nanoscale resolution and state-of-the-art simulation and modeling of confined condensate and flux as well as their dynamics in different artificially nanoengineered confined geometries will be used to reveal novel phenomena appearing in nanostructured two-component superconductors.

    Magnetic nanophotonics”

    50000403v1266
Promoter: Victor Moshchalkov and Koen Clays

    details
Description: This research will be carried out in the framework of the METHUSALEM NANO Programme.

In quantum dots the photoluminescence (PL) is governed by the electron-hole recombination of excited charge carriers. This process will be probed and fine tuned by using external magnetic field, which “changes the colour” of the emission (blue shift of the PL line). We shall investigate confinement effects on magneto PL in quantum dots of different shape and sizes made from different materials. To enhance the optical output, we shall use nanomodulated metallic films placed on top of the planar structures containing quantum dots. One of the key experiments will be time-resolved magneto-photoluminescence and application of non-linear optical techniques. Enhanced PL using metallic nanostructures (“optical nanoantennas”) in close vicinity with nanostructures will also be investigated, including metal nanoparticles coated by polythiophene. Selective enhancement of the optical radiation at specific locations of plasmonic metallic nanoparticles will be probed by the photonic STM. This enhancement will be used for developing bright markers for bioimaging and bio- and chemical sensing as well as for boosting the efficiency of photovoltaic systems through plasmonics effects in incorporated metallic nanograins.

Development of polymer electrolytes for PEMFC (IRO scholarship)

    50000403v1569
    Promoter: Jean-Pierre Locquet

    details
Description: A gas fed battery that never needs recharging!
The fuel cell promises to deliver clean and efficient power by combining hydrogen and oxygen in a simple electrochemical device that directly converts chemical energy to electrical energy. Among various types of fuel cell PEM (proton exchange membrane) fuel cells promise to be an efficient one since it has an immobilized electrolyte membrane there is simplication in the production process that in turn reduces corrosion, provides longer stack life [1]. While many breakthroughs have been made over the past few years, both technical and economic barriers for PEMFC commercialization still exist. The most important materials under development for PEMFC stacks are construction materials for the cell frames, bipolar plates, electrocatalysts for the fuel and air electrode, and the ion conducting membrane [2]. In particular, much effort is being focused on the development of new membranes for PEMFC’s with improved performance and durability.
So the goal of the present work is to find a suitable polymer membrane with high proton conductivity, good mechanical, chemical and thermal strength and low gas permeability. The second approach is to improve the electrical performance of polymer membranes at T>100°C and low relative humidity by preparing new complexes with the ionic liquids. Due to its desirable properties such as high mechanical strength, good chemical stability, and high ionic conductivity under high-humidity conditions Nafion membrane will be focused for this research project. Later polymer electrolytes will be complexed with ionic liquids based on phosphonium cation because of its enhanced chemical stability under varied conditions, more thermal stability than ammonium and imidazolium salts and less expensive.

PhD Student Position in Theoretical Few-body Physics in support of the European (ERC-StG) Project ANSR

    Reference number 2009/129
    Apply for this job
    Application deadline 2009-10-31
The Department of Fundamental physics invites applications for a phd student position in theoretical few-body physics in support of the European ERC-StG project ANSR (Ab initio approach to nuclear structure and reactions++).

    Job description
The ANSR project aims at developing microscopic approaches to study strongly-interacting few-body systems. Our methodology is computational, quantum many-body theory, and the main focus is on addressing contemporary problems in low-energy nuclear physics. However, the formalism and techniques are sufficiently general to be adapted for tackling related problems in other subfields of the physical sciences. Two principal avenues for groundbreaking research under the umbrella of the ANSR project have been identified: (1) Developing a unified ab initio theory of nuclear structure and reactions; and (2) Adapting existing nuclear-physics, many-body techniques to study other strongly correlated quantum many-body systems. In particular, the method of effective interactions will be used to model few-body systems of ultracold atoms obeying either bosonic or fermionic statistics. The successful candidate is expected to work on one of these two research avenues.
This position is funded by the European Commission via the grant ERC-StG ANSR. The successful candidate will benefit from existing and productive scientific collaborations with researchers in Europe and the U.S. The computations within the ANSR project will be performed on local (linux cluster), national (SNIC) and U.S. (NERSC) supercomputer centres.
    Qualifications
Applicants should have a M.Sc. degree in Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field. The scientific interest of the candidates should be within theoretical physics, quantum few-body systems and computational physics.
As a PhD student you will perform research, take PhD courses and participate in undergraduate education. The objective of a PhD student position is to obtain a PhD degree, with the intermediate goal to obtain the degree of Licentiate of Engineering after about two years. The total time period for the position is limited to five years.
    Application procedure

The application shall be written in English and include the following items:
    1. An application of a maximum of one A4 page containing your specific qualifications for the position
