PhD Student Position in Optoelectronics

Reference number REF 2010/55

Application deadline 2010-05-01
The Photonics Laboratory at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2), with about 25 members, conducts application oriented research in the areas of optoelectronics and fibre optics, directed primarily towards the development of new material, device and system technologies for optical communication, measurements and sensing.
Research on semiconductor lasers, which are key components in modern optical communication and sensing systems, started at Chalmers already in the early 1980's. Today we master everything from laser design, epitaxial growth and laser fabrication to laser characterization and system evaluation. We are in a world leading position in certain areas, including lasers for high capacity data communication links (multi-mode) and access networks (single-mode) with record performance in terms of modulation bandwidth, transmission capacity and high-temperature performance. We also develop lasers for high power/short pulse generation and photonic THz generation and light emitting diodes for deep-UV wavelengths. We participate in several European projects and work closely with academic and industrial partners world-wide.
To further strengthen our efforts on semiconductor lasers we will now expand our team with a new PhD student working primarily on high speed lasers for short reach optical communication links and interconnects.

Job description
We seek a PhD student to work in a team of senior researchers and other PhD students with complementary skills and tasks. After being trained in device fabrication using state-of-the-art equipment in a clean room environment, the new PhD student will actively participate in the fabrication and characterization of high speed lasers. This also includes system level experiments. A limited amount of efforts in laser design and modelling is also expected. Much of the work will be conducted in close collaboration with external partners within European and other projects.
Required qualifications
Master of Science degree in Engineering Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering or equivalent. Solid knowledge in the areas of semiconductors, electromagnetic fields, optoelectronics and photonics is required. Any experience from device fabrication in a clean room environment and device characterization, including high frequency measurements, is a merit.
