PhD position in Physics in the area of Physics Education Research

at the Department of Physics and Materials Science. Starting date: 1 February, 2010.
The Physics Education Research Group is an integral part of the Department of Physics and Materials Science. The research focus is on interplays between the experience of learning and the learning environment. More detail may be found on our home page http://www.fysik.uu.se/didaktik/.
Simulators are fundamental tools in the training of reactor operators for nuclear power plants. However, there is little in-depth knowledge about the nature of the learning and how this learning experience impacts on praxis and practice - especially in incident-situations that require thoughtful, exacting, effective and rapid responses. In particular, we are interested in the gaining of conceptual understanding and the formation of a holistic overview in Swedish nuclear power plant simulator training environments. Hence we are looking for a highly motivated and independently minded PhD student to join a project that studies these dynamics in the Swedish nuclear power plant context.
The simulator situations that the successful applicant will be working with are designed to resemble the real control rooms as far as possible, and the training is to a very large degree based on re-acting realistic scenarios. The study will be undertaken in a case study framework where the essential collaboration network needed will have been officially established.
The successful candidate would have an excellent opportunity to be considered for employment by the Swedish nuclear power plant industry to contribute to the development of their reactor operator education programme.
If you are interested, send your application including a statement of research interest, a CV, copies of exams, degrees and grades, a copy of your Master thesis (or a draft thereof), published articles or other relevant material (if applicable) to the address below.
The PhD position is full time employment position for a tenure of four years. However, the possibility for the tenure to be extendable to a maximum of five years exists to allow the inclusion of university level physics teaching and/or laboratory supervision into the PhD education.
Please note that for this position excellent language skills in Swedish and English are essential.
Further information is available from: http://www.physics.uu.se/education/gradU/.
Uppsala University is striving to achieve a more even gender balance and women are especially encouraged to apply.
For more information, please contact: Cedric Linder, tel +46-(0)18-4713539 (cedric.linder@fysik.uu.se) or Staffan Andersson, tel +46-(0)18-4713520 (staffan.andersson@fysik.uu.se). Union representatives are Anders Grundström, SACO, tel 018-471 5380 and Carin Söderhäll, TCO/ST, tel 018-471 1996, Stefan Djurström, SEKO, tel 018-471 3315.
The application should be sent to: Registrar's Office, UFV-PA 2009/2263 Uppsala University, Box 256, 751 05 UPPSALA, Sweden; fax +46-(0)18-4712000 or e-mail: registrator@uu.se. An application by fax or e-mail must be followed by a letter containing the original documents, at the latest a week after application deadline.
Application Deadline on Friday 30 October, 2009.

The Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) has the following vacancy

    PhD-student on single-photon nonlinear optics(V34.338)

at the Photonics and Semiconductor Nanophysics group, Department of Applied Physics

The Department of Applied Physics at Eindhoven University of Technology has 15 professorial chairs with about 65 academic and 60 technical specialists, as well as 110 graduate and 375 undergraduate students. The leading research themes cover functional materials, transport physics, and plasma physics and radiation technology. The department has extensive national and international partnerships, including industrial partners. It participates in several national (top) research schools, and in two national top technology institutes: Dutch Polymer Institute (DPI) and Materials Innovation Institute (M2i). Eindhoven University of Technology is one of the three participants in the Dutch 3TU Federation of Universities of Technology.

    Tasks

A PhD student position in the area of quantum optics and solid-state physics is available at the Photonics and Semiconductor Nanophysics group at the Eindhoven University of Technology (The Netherlands). Quantum dots (QDs) are semiconductor nanostructures with a three-dimensional confinement potential, resulting in a quantized energy structure and atom-like radiative emission properties. Single QDs in optical nanocavities provide an ideal framework to investigate cavity quantum electrodynamic (QED) effects in a solid-state environment, with important potential applications to quantum information processing. This project, part of a TU/e High-Potential Research Program, aims at the investigation of single-photon nonlinearities in QD-cavity systems. We will study the transmission properties of a photonic crystal cavity when a single QD is resonant with it. Due to the strong coupling between excitons and photons, we expect to observe nonlinear effects at the single-photon level. Additionally we aim at demonstrating a single-photon optical transistor by using a second beam to control the excitonic population. Such a device would have important applications in classical and quantum photonic integrated circuits.
    Requirements

We welcome applications from candidates with a Master degree and an excellent academic record in physics (condensed matter or optical physics). Candidates must prove a strong attitude towards experimental physics. Candidates with engineering or material science background will not be considered.
    Appointment and Salary

This position offers full-time employment for 4 years, with an initial evaluation period. The monthly (gross) salary will be approx. 2000 Euro in the first year and increase to approx. 2600 Euro in the fourth year, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement of the Dutch Universities. The University offers an attractive package of fringe benefits such as excellent technical infrastructure, child care, savings schemes and excellent sports facilities.
    Information

More information about the University can be found at: www.tue.nl.
    Application

Please email (max 300 kB, no large attachments) a CV with name and address of two references to: Prof. Andrea Fiore, a.fiore@tue.nl
Candidates are urged to apply as soon as possible, as selection will start immediately.
Candidates applying to both this position and to the position on "Dynamic control of cavity QED" (http://vacatures-v2.tue.nl/vacature.aspx?vacaturenummer=V34.337&Taal=EN), please send a single application.
You can apply for this job before 31-10-2009
