Throughout history, the pursuit of pure mathematics has pushed not only mathematics itself but also other sciences forward. Research in pure mathematics is an investment in the future. We are looking for a PhD student to work in the exciting field of pure mathematics.
The Department of Mathematical Sciences houses approximately 80 researchers active in a wide range of research fields in an internationally recognized, strong research environment. The department belongs to both Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg.
The main research areas at the department are algebra and combinatorics related to mathematical physics, algebraic geometry, complex analysis, discrete mathematics, mathematical aspects of general relativity, number theory, probability theory, and spectral theory and harmonic analysis. Job description
As a PhD student you will be part of an international research environment while you expand your knowledge of the field of mathematics and write your PhD thesis. This gives opportunities for many inspiring conversations, much autonomous work and some traveling. Usually, a position is for five years and a PhD student will spend about 80% of his or her time on graduate studies, and about 20% on teaching. You can initially teach in English (or Swedish) but after two years you are expected to be able to teach in Swedish.
Required qualifications
Applicants must have a strong background in mathematics. They must have obtained a master's degree or a 4-year bachelor's degree, or expect to complete the degree by September 1, 2011.
It is important that you mention in the application your specific research interests. You should also include all relevant work such as bachelor's or master's thesis (or outline of a thesis under preparation) and articles (provide an English summary if necessary) that you have authored or co-authored, together with letters of recommendation (see item 4 below).
