    Two PhD Positions in Experimental Astroparticle Physics

    KTH is the largest technical university in Sweden. Education and research cover a broad spectrum within natural sciences and engineering, as well as architecture, industrial engineering and management, urban planning, work science and environmental engineering. There are circa 12,000 full-year undergraduate students, 1,400 postgraduate students and 3,100 employees.
    The School of Engineering Sciences carries out a wide range of research at the international front line, from fundamental disciplines such as physics and mathematics, to engineering mechanics with applications such as aeronautics and vehicle engineering.     The astroparticle physics group at KTH

    conducts research on cosmic rays and the high energy gamma-ray Universe. This includes some of the most important scientific questions today, such as the search for dark matter and the origin of gamma-ray bursts. The research programme is centred around the development of advanced instrumentation, subsequent data analysis and interpretation. The group is playing a leading role in several international experiments: Femi Gamma-Ray Telescope, PAMELA, and PoGOLite. The Oskar Klein Center for Cosmoparticle Physics

    at AlbaNova University Center, to which the group belongs, provides a prominent and stimulating context for these activities.

    1. Observations of compact object with Fermi

    The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope is an international satellite experiment that has been observing the high energy gamma-ray Universe since its launch in June 2008. The successful applicant will join the group’s research within the fields of gamma-ray bursts, active galactic nuclei and pulsars.
    2. Observations of gamma-ray polarisation with PoGOLite

    PoGOLite is a balloon-borne instrument which will make pioneering observations of gamma-ray polarisation aimed at the study of energetic phenomena such as pulsars and black holes. PoGOLite is an international project which is led by KTH. The successful applicant will participate in hardware and observational preparations for the maiden balloon flight foreseen for August 2010, subsequent data analysis and future deployment to circumpolar flights.
    Qualifications

    Applicants should hold a Master of Science in Physics or Engineering Physics, including a solid background in physics, and demonstrate an interest in experimental and/or observational astrophysics. Experience in computer programming (both projects) and/or hardware development (PoGOLite project) is desirable. The projects require independent work in addition to collaborative skills and creative thinking. Since the projects are part of international collaborations good oral and written communication skills in English are required.
    The position is offered under the teaching assistant scheme (utbildningsbidrag) for the first two years of study. The remuneration associated with this appointment can be supplemented by a maximum of 15% paid departmental teaching duties. Full PhD studentships (doktorandtjänst) with an associated higher salary will be offered for the remaining years of study.
    To address its varied work, KTH aims to employ a diversity of talent and thus welcomes applicants who will add to the variety of the University, especially as concerns its gender structure.

    6 PhD Research Fellowship positions in Information Technology, Mathematics and Electrical engineering


    Faculty of Information Technology, Mathematics, and Electrical Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applicants for 6 PhD research fellowship positions. The fellowships are intended for PhD studies and are open to applicants in all areas of research covered by the 6 different Faculty departments:


    The 6 research fellowship positions are awarded on a competitive basis, to help recruit talented candidates for the PhD study programs administered by IME. These programs comprise the following fields of research; communication technology, computer science, cybernetics, electronics, information science, mathematics, power engineering and statistics. Collaboration with researchers from other areas of science and engineering at NTNU, as well as with external partners from industry, research institutes, and other universities (Norway and abroad) is commonplace.     The Faculty is keen to attract the best candidates available and puts few restrictions on training background and fields of research (see list above).     The PhD fellowships are placed in salary code 1017, salary level 45 - 61 in the national salary scheme, gross NOK 355 400 – 471 700 per annum, of which 2 % is deducted for the State Pension scheme. Starting salary is expected to be at level 45. The salary might be adjusted after negotiations with the employer to reflect the applicant’s experience.

    The appointment will be made in accordance with current regulations with supplementary rules for research fellowship appointments in universities and polytechnics.     Postdoctoral fellow in geothermal simulation at the Department of Mathematics


    At the Department of Mathematics there is a vacant position as postdoctoral fellow within the project “Assessing the potential for deep geothermal energy”.

    The postdoctoral position is a fixed-term post, the chief objective being to qualify the selected candidate for work in senior positions in their disciplines. The term of employment for this position is 3 years.

    It is not possible for any person to work under more than one temporary appointment as postdoctoral fellow for the same institution.

    The project this position is a component of is funded by the Research Council of Norway and StatoilHydro, and it is executed in collaboration with the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Bergen and Physics of Geological Processes (PGP), which is a Norwegian Centre of Excellence at the University of Oslo We are currently looking for a postdoctoral fellow to join our project on mathematical modelling and numerical simulation of geothermal systems. In addition to the currently announced postdoctoral position, the interdisciplinary project team involves two PhD students and one researcher as well as permanent faculty and associated master students.

    The successful candidate will develop numerical methods and computer code for simulation of anthropogenic geothermal systems. The project address mathematical modelling, numerical methods and simulation, involving both theoretical and practical issues. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to form an active part of the research team, interacting with ongoing work.

    We are soliciting applications from candidates with background in applied mathematics, geoscience or a related field. Specific qualifications that should be emphasized in the application are familiarity with modeling and simulation of geothermal systems, and, in particular, experience with numerical methods for partial differential equations, heat and fluid flow in (fractured) porous media, and programming.     Description of the position

    The postdoctoral position is part of the research group in secure and reliable communication (Selmer Centre) at the Department of Informatics (http://www.selmer.uib.no/). The project leader is Torleiv Kløve (http://www.uib.no/personer/Torleiv.Klove ). The Selmer Centre consists of 5 full professors, 1 associate professor, and approximately 15 researchers, postdoctoral fellows and PhD students.
    The postdoctoral fellow will work on the project "Studies on Codes for Error Detection", financed by the Research Council of Norway for the period 2009 to 2012. In all there will be two postdoctoral researchers and one PhD student working on the project. The main aims of the project are to investigate a number of open problems on codes for error detection, such as the existence of proper codes, optimal codes, worst case codes. The candidate should ideally have a background in coding theory.
    The successful applicant will benefit from highly favourable working conditions – Bergen is a beautiful city on the west coast of Norway, next to mountains and fjords. The project supervisor is Torleiv Kløve.

    The project this position is a component of is funded by the Research Council of Norway and the University of Bergen under the Outstanding Young Investigator program. The successful candidate will join a research team which aims at integrating the fields of upscaling, multi-scale methods and numerical linear algebra within the context of multi-phase flow in porous media. The project will address both theoretical and practical issues, and the candidate will be expected to familiarize him/herself with a broad spectrum of knowledge to form an active part of the research team.

    PhD fellowship position in «Physical effect of load fluctuations in rivers and reservoirs» CEDREN (IVT 131/09)


    The Norwegian government has established eight national research centres on climate friendly energy generation, one of which is the Centre for Environmental Design of Renewable Energy (CEDREN). In order to ensure environmental design of existing and new renewable energy production, interdisciplinary collaboration is necessary, alongside close collaboration and interaction between the R & D institutions, the industry and management authorities.

    SINTEF, NTNU and NINA are research partners and leading national and international institutions and companies are partners (i.e. Statkraft, Statnett, Hydro, Sira-Kvina, NVE, EBL etc). Many national and international research organizations are collaborating with the Centre for example NIVA and LFI in Norway, KTH and SLU in Sweden and BOKU in Austria.

    We are also collaborating closely with other relevant FME centres, such as Norwegian Research Centre for Offshore Wind Technology (NOWITECH) and Norwegian Centre for Offshore Wind Energy (NORCOWE).

    CEDREN will engage at least 15 PhDs and PostDocs, and 9 of the positions are already established. Due to lack of qualified candidates, this is the second announcement for three of the Ph D positions. The PhD positions are open for the first period of the research program 2010-2013.

    Physical effects of load fluctuations in rivers and reservoirs
    Better understanding of the effects of rapid flow fluctuations is necessary for planning hydro peaking operations and for designing hydraulic structures. The candidate will identify the state of art regarding physical effects of rapid flow variations. She/he will develop flow scenarios to monitor and analyze the effects of rapid flow variations in the field or laboratory. The goal of the study is to develop methods for predicting the effects of fluctuating flows, to develop guidelines and to propose mitigation measures.

    Suitable background/Qualifications:
    The candidate should have a masters degree in hydraulic engineering, fluid mechanics or similar. The applicant must have profound knowledge of hydraulics and sediment transport around hydraulic structures which are typical for hydropower plants. In addition she/he should have experience from working scientifically in the field or laboratory.

    Salaries
    PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017 in the State salary scale 45-51, gross NOK 353400 to NOK 394 200 per annum (before tax), depending on qualifications.
    PhD candidates are normally remunerated at wage level 45. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Found from gross salary.

    The research in experimental particle physics at KTH

    is conducted within large international collaborations through the CERN research facility in Geneva. The KTH group has contributed to the construction of the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), in particular to the ATLAS electromagnetic calorimeter system. At LHC, where the collision energy will be almost 10 times higher than what so far has been available elsewhere, we will try to find the answer to some of the most fundamental open issues in science today like the explanation of mass and the search for signs of new physics that may explain the dark matter of the universe.

    The research activity for the PhD student will mainly be data analysis and physics interpretation of results from the ATLAS-experiment, but also to some extent detector development for future upgrades of the experiment. The group, which has its premises at the AlbaNova buildings in the Stockholm Campus area, has extensive collaboration with other groups, among them the Stockholm University group located in the same building, which contributes to a stimulating research environment. Part of the research time will be spent at CERN.
    Qualifications

    Applicants should hold a Master of Science in Physics or Engineering Physics, including a solid background in physics, and demonstrate an interest in experimental particle physics. Experience in computer programming is desirable. The project requires independent work in addition to collaborative skills and creative thinking. Since the project is a part of an international collaboration good oral and written communication skills in English are required.
    The position is offered under the teaching assistant scheme (utbildningsbidrag) for the first two years of study. The remuneration associated with this appointment can be supplemented by a maximum of 15% paid departmental teaching duties. Full PhD studentships (doktorandtjänst) with an associated higher salary will be offered for the remaining years of study.

    2-3 PhD positions available within physical metallurgy/metal plasticity (NT-64/09)


    Due to the importance of the Norwegian Aluminium industry, where our main industrial collaborator is Hydro, there is a high activity and a strong tradition of research on aluminium alloys at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. During recent years cross-disciplinary collaboration with Department of Structural Engineering and with the centre of research based Innovation CRI-SIMLab (http://www.ntnu.no/simlab) have beeen established. Here the traditional disciplines meet in the border between continuum and crystal plasticity and physical metallurgy.

    Due to the start-up of several new research projects we are searching for 2-3 new PhD candidates. We are searching candidates with a university degree (Master of Science or equivalent) in materials science and engineering, physics or equivalent, who have a strong background within at least one of the following fields:

    • Continuum plastisity.
    • Crystal plasticity.
    • Mathematical modelling.
    • TEM/SEM microscopy.
    • Skills in implementation in Fortran, C, Phyton or similar computer languages.

    The subjects of the theses are related to texture and microstructure induced anisotropy in aluminum alloys. The goal is education of researchers contributing to increased use of mathematical modelling in metal plasticity. Depending of the skills of the chosen candidate the main efforts will be on providing experimentally input to models or on the mathematical modelling itself. At least one of the tasks will be responses to strain-path changes.

    Context
    The primary workplace will be Department of Materials Science and Engineering, NTNU, Trondheim, Norway. The appointment of the PhD fellow will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations for university employees in Norway.

    Applicants are obliged to engage on an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicant's plan for a PhD study. Their MSc degree results are thus expected to qualify for acceptance as a PhD student at NTNU. The Fellow and the University must sign a mutual contract regarding the period of appointment and the obligations of the PhD fellow.

    NTNU’s PhD-rules require a master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best).     PhD scholarship recipients are employed for three years in the position. The salary is adjusted according to the Norwegian state salary scale at level 45, gross NOK 355 400 a year (before tax) at appointment, with a deduction of 2 % premium for the Norwegian State Pension Fund.
