Post doc in Hybrid Quantum Systems

    Reference number REF 2009/255
    Apply for this job

    Application deadline 2010-06-01
The position is in the Quantum Device Physics Laboratory at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience - MC2. The work will be part of a large effort on quantum information and on-chip quantum optics involving several students and postdocs supported by senior researchers and professors, including both experimentalists and theoreticians.
The project is part of the EU integrated project SOLID, which brings together researchers from 12 leading European institutions and is coordinated at Chalmers. The work will take place in a strong research environment at Chalmers, supported by the Linnaeus Center of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems and the new Chalmers Nanotechnology Center. The project will allow opportunities for travel and collaboration.

    Job description
Quantum computation and quantum information processing have emerged as exciting new fields of physics in the last decade. While offering the promise of radical new technologies in the future, these fields are driving our basic understanding of quantum mechanics and its implications. These fields have become increasingly interdisciplinary in recent years, drawing in physicists from a variety of disciplines, ranging from quantum optics to condensed matter physics. Early work was dominated by results in natural quantum systems, such as photons and atoms. Recently, work on engineered quantum systems, i.e. solid-state devices, has become increasingly important. A particularly important contribution to this work has come from the field of superconducting quantum circuits.
The physical qubits implemented in these various field of physics all have distinct advantages and disadvantages. Natural qubits tend to have long coherence times but are difficult to couple together. Converserely, superconducting qubits are easy to couple using the tools of nanofabrication, but have shorter coherence times. In this project, we seek to develop a hybrid quantum system that combines the advantages of these disparate fields.
The goal of this project will be to demonstrate coupling of a superconducting microwave resonator to the microwave transitions of rare-earth ions doped into crystals, and to evaluate the coherence properties of the various transitions that could be used for a quantum memory and a quantum interface. These materials have received increasing attention as optical quantum interfaces owing to their long optical and spin coherence times. Spin state coherence times up to 30 sec have been measured in a rare-earth-doped crystal.
We seek a motivated postdoctoral researcher to be part of the experimental effort at Chalmers University of Technology. The position is available to start 1 February 2010, but the actually starting time is negotiable. The project has funding for 3 years, however, standard postdoc contracts at Chalmers are for 1 year at a time.
We will start to interview qualified applicants after 31 January 2010. A candidate maybe chosen at anytime after that, but applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

Required qualifications The successful applicant should have (or be nearing completion of) a PhD in a field of physics. Candidates should have experience in at least some of the following areas: superconductivity, mesoscopic physics, quantum optics, atomic physics, nanofabrication, cryogenics, microwave technology. Fluency in written and spoken English is also a requirement. We are encouraging women to apply for this position.

    Application procedure
The application shall be written in English and include the following items:

    1. An application of a maximum of one A4 page containing your specific qualifications for the position
    2. Curriculum Vitae including list of publications
    3. Two reference persons who can be contacted by Chalmers (describe association with them and give their contact addresses)
    4. Attested copies of education certificates, including grade reports and other documents

The application shall be sent electronically. Please use the button at the foot of the page to reach the application form.
The documents according to items 1-4 above shall be attached as two pdf-files.
One should contain items 1-3 in the listing of material to be included in the application The other should contain item 4 in the listing of material, and any other appendices. The files may be compressed (zipped).
If any material is not available electronically or cannot be transferred to pdf format, the material can be sent as a hard copy to Registrar. The applicants name and the reference number (REF 2009/255) must be written on the first page of the application.

From the first experiments a decade ago, the performance of superconducting quantum bits (qubits) has improved as much as 3 orders of magnitude. Early advances were gained through improved designs of the qubits and measurement systems. While this approach may continue to be fruitful, it is also general recognized in the field that there is a lack of understanding of the microscopic mechanisms that limit the performance of superconducting qubits. There is now a major international effort to understand these mechanisms and eliminate them through advancements in our physical understanding, but also through technological advancements in materials and fabrication methods.
At the same time it has become evident that the inherent nonlinearity of the superconducting circuits can be used to create strong interaction between microwave photons and these circuits. The interaction typically takes place in superconducting cavities formed in a coplanar waveguide geometry. These cavities can be made tunable in frequency so that the cavity can be brought into resonance with a qubits. Potentially the Q-values of these cavities can also be tuned. This new area of research called circuit quantum electrodynamics (circuit-QED) has gained a lot of momentum, and this has opened the possibility to integrate many cavities and qubits on-chip. There is a great opportunity to merge condensed matter physics with quantum optics and to do experiments on chip.
Quantum optics on chip with superconducting circuits

The overall objective of this project is to build a toolbox based on circuit-QED and tunable superconducting elements to enable on-chip integrated quantum optics. Our vision is to move quantum optics experiments from large optical tables and integrate them on chip, with a substantially increased level of integration. The tools that we intend to develop will open for new well-controlled experiments with many cavities and many “atoms” in the form of superconducting qubits. We enter a new road where the quantum nature of both photons and “atoms” can be integrated and utilized. Many, but not all, of the tools needed to do quantum optics in the microwave domain already exist. For example, bidirectional couplers take the role of beam splitters. The role of lasers is played by microwave generators, which can be modulated in many different ways and also phase locked to other sources. Circulators also exist in the microwave domain. However, there are also a number of “tools” which do not yet exist in the microwave domain, but it should be possible to make them with present technology. This project targets individual components which can generate, detect, and reroute single microwave photons on-chip. In addition to these single photon devices, the tunable superconducting circuits can also be used for parametric generation and amplification of photons. The parametric devices are not necessarily single photon devices but they are fundamentally interesting and can be very useful as on-chip sources and detectors for microwave signals.
The position is available to start immediately. The actually starting time is negotiable. The project has long term funding, renewable for up to 4-5 years. However, standard postdoc contracts at Chalmers are for 1 year at a time.
We will start to interview qualified applicants after January 18, 2010. A candidate maybe chosen at anytime after that, but applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
    Goals for the project include:

    • A superconducting cavity with tunable Q-value
    • An on-demand single photon source
    • A number resolving single-photon click-detector
    • A single photon router A single photon sluice

    Spin-torque effects in magnetic nanostructures

    50000403v283

Promoter: Kristiaan Temst, Chris Van Haesendonck, Alexander Volodin

    details
Description: This position is related to our research program on spin torque effects in nanostructured magnetic materials. The spin torque effect is a recent discovery in magnetic materials and refers to the switching of the ferromagnetic magnetization by subjecting the material to a spin-polarized electric current rather than an external field. Apart from the fundamental interest in this phenomenon, this may also become an important technological tool in new generations of magnetic memory devices. Within this project we will study how magnetization reversal occurs under the influence of a spin-polarized current in ferromagnetic nanowires, ferromagnet/metal multilayer structures and magnetic nanoparticles embedded in a non-magnetic host material.
This project will be carried out in close collaboration between the Nuclear Solid State Physics group (K. Temst) of the Institute for Nuclear and Radiation Physics and the Laboratory for Solid State Physics and Magnetism (C. Van Haesendonck, A. Volodin). The samples will be prepared in the Ion and Molecular Beam Laboratory in Leuven. We will study the spin torquee effects with magnetotransport, magnetic force microscopy, and Mössbauer effect. Additional measurements, involving synchrotron and neutron scattering will be carried out at the ESRF (Grenoble) and the Hahn-Meitner-Institut (Berlin).

Local probing of interfacial coupling in correlated electron systems

    50000403v929

Promoter: Kristiaan Temst, André Vantomme, Margriet Van Bael

    details
Description: This research proposal focuses on thin-film correlated electron systems in which layers with different functionalities (ferromagnet, antiferromagnet, superconductor) are confronted with each other at their mutual interface. The intimate contact between two dissimilar layers leads, in general, to a proximity effect that influences the intrinsic properties of the constituent layers. We will study interface coupling and proximity effects in three model systems that incorporate a ferromagnet on the one hand and another ferromagnet, an antiferromagnet, or a superconductor on the other hand. In all cases it is our aim to unravel the details of the coupling and/or mutual influence at the interface. One of the main tools in this work is the use of synchrotron-based nuclear resonant scattering and probing layers containing suitable Mössbauer isotopes to determine the interfacial properties.

Structural and magnetic roughness of thin films by off-specular neutron reflectivity

    50000403v1283

    Promoter: Kristiaan Temst, André Vantomme

    details
Description: We are looking for a candidate who is interested to pursue interdisciplinary research on thin film systems, leading to a PhD. The topic concerns the study of structural and magnetic roughness of thin fil msystems. On the one hand, metallic thin films (hard condensed matter) will be studied with the aim of correlating the structural features (in particular the film roughness) with the magnetic hereogeneity ('magnetic roughness'). On the other hand, the surface morphology of thin films of soft condensed matter systems (polymer films) will be studied. The overall aim is to develop a better understanding of roughness and fractal surface behaviour of thin films. In practice the main research tool will be off-specular reflectivity of neutrons. The candidate will be stationed at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble, where the world's most powerful neutron source is located. Neutron beam time for this project is forseen. Additional characterization measurements will be carried out in the university. The candidate will carry out her/his research work in tight collaboration with and under the supervision of the university promoter and a senior scientist at the ILL.

    Nanoprecipitate formation by ion implantation

    50000403v1759

Promoter: Kristiaan Temst, André Vantomme, Wilfried Vandervorst

    details
Description: The objective is to create precipitates embedded within a substrate as the interaction of the nanoclusters with the surroundings can lead to additional functionality versus clsuters which are solely deposited on a surface. An attractive approach for this purpose is to rely on high-fluence implantation of energetic ions followed by thermal treatment, such that clusters will self-assemble in the substrate. Eventually, this ion beam synthesis can be combined with the use of nm-sized masks to form either patterned groups of precipitates or even (large) ordered single precipitates. It is important to realize that the non-equilibrium conditions during ion implantation allow the formation of metastable phases, thus further expanding the possible control of the functionality. Concurrent with the fabrication, efforts towards refined characterization on the nm-scale need to be pursued. Structural information will be investigated using EXAFS, RBS, high resolution TEM and 3D-composition mapping using the Tomographic Atomprobe.
