Lattice site location of impurities in semiconductors

    50000403v1779

Promoter: André Vantomme, Wilfried Vandervorst,Kristiaan Temst

    details
Description: The exact lattice site occupied by impurities in a semiconductor host drastically determine their properties, which can be either beneficial (as an electrical, optical, magnetic… dopant) or detrimental. By studying the anisotropic emission of charged particles, following the radioactive decay of implanted impurities, it is possible to determine the position of the impurity with a very high precision (down to 0.01 nm). This knowledge can finally lead to the manipulation of occupied lattice site(s) by varying external parameters, e.g. thermal treatment, co-doping, electron irradiation etc. These emission channeling experiments are mainly performed at the ISOLDE facility at CERN (Geneva) and are compared to existing ab initio calculations. These physical observations will be coupled to the electrical properties such sheet resistance, mobility, defect distribution thus providing a complete understanding of the impurity behavior during implantation and subsequent annealing.

Ion beam sculpting of thin film surfaces

    50000403v1780

Promoter: André Vantomme, Wilfried Vandervorst, Kristiaan Temst, Chris Van Haesendonck

    details
Description: There is currently a strong interest in processes that can lead to a largely parallel production of nanoscale features on a surface. Small features can be created using ‘top-down’ lithographic methods like electron beam lithography and focused ion beam writing, but these are serial, and hence, slow and expensive production techniques. The interest is therefore focused on self-organization (‘bottom-up’) as a route towards high-throughput mass production of regularly structured surfaces. One of the successful methods explored so far is sputtering with an ion beam in order to create topographically modulated surfaces. This has been observed to lead to the formation of ripple structures and dots (at the nanometer scale) on a variety of surfaces (semiconductors, metals, and insulators). The pattern is the result of a competition between roughening as a result of the ion erosion and smoothening as a result of surface diffusion. Ion irradiation has furthermore the attractive feature that it is a technique that is already familiar to and implemented in the mass production of semiconductor devices, and therefore it may be adopted by the industry as a tool for mass production of controlled manipulation of surface morphology.

Genesis of electrical and magnetic properties in condensed matter: towards multifunctionality

    50000403v1781

Promoter: Lievens, Temst, Van Bael, Vandervorst, Van Haesendonck, Vantomme, Locquet, Seo

    details
Description: Recent years have witnessed exciting new developments related to multifunctional thin-film structures with interrelated multiple functionalities. A first class of materials are multiferroics, where an intimate coupling between electrical polarization and magnetization can be established in one single material. Apart from single-phase thin-film multiferroics, heterostructures are intensively investigated, where different materials with nanometer dimensions are brought together, resulting in multifunctionality through coupling at the interfaces. The project aims at the genesis of specific electrical and magnetic properties, i.e., the exploration and improved understanding of their emergence, modification, coexistence, or mutual influence. Two complementary approaches will be used to obtain the multifunctional systems. In the first approach, films with a new nanoscale structure are obtained either by the assembly of clusters, by ion beam synthesis, or by physical vapor deposition through masks with nanosize holes. This way, nanometer size entities with lattice structure and composition that are unstable in bulk can be included. The second approach relies on known multifunctional systems, where the multifunctionality will be tuned by reducing size or by introducing specific defect structures, in particular by ion irradiation.

Magnetic deflection experiments of small clusters: metal alloys, doped semiconductors and oxides

    50000403v1461

    Promoter: Peter Lievens

    details
Description: In this experimental project fundamental aspects of magnetism will be addressed, in particular of ferromagnetism, antiferromagnetism, and the Kondo-effect. The aim is to investigate the onset of magnetism in ultrasmall binary clusters. More specifically the influence of size and composition on the magnetic structure will be studied by measuring cluster magnetic moments in the gas phase. This will require the implementation of magnetic beam deflection in the cluster beam setup, in combination with mass spectrometry, laser ionization, and position sensitive detection.

We seek a highly motivated and skilled student to take part in an ongoing experimental effort at Quantum Device Physics laboratory of the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience - MC2, Chalmers University of Technology regarding the newly discovered material, graphene.
The project will be run by the prospective applicant together with masters students, a Post doc and professors working within the field. Totally, there are about 15 PhD students, 8 Professors and Associate- and Assistant Professors in the group representing an international environment and the home of many national and EU projects, primarily in the field of quantum computation.

    Job description
Graphene is a single layer of graphite which has only recently been isolated and studied. Graphene is versatile both for fundamental studies and applications like various sensors and high-frequency devices. Graphene is mechanically robust and can be nanostructured to make very small electronic circuits. Its superb mechanical properties can be used for nanomechanical devices, including mass sensors. The long electron spin coherence time in graphene promises good performance in spintronics.

The objective is to utilize various techniques in fabrication of graphene, characterization methods with resolution down to the atomic scale, and device fabrication to i) assure reproducible supply of high-quality graphene, ii) to structure graphene for sensing applications and high-frequency devices using nanofabrication methods and functional substrates (high-k materials, ferroelectrics), iii) investigate fundamental aspects such as impurity scattering, adsorbents, and electron-phonon interaction in graphene nanostructures, including their effects on charge and spin transport.

The student will utilize a range of nanofabrication tools like e-beam lithography and Focused-Ion Beam (FIB) etching and methods to analyze graphene like Atomic-Force Microscopy (AFM) and RAMAN spectroscopy. The student will also electrically characterize graphene samples and devices at low temperatures (0.05 - 100 K) and high magnetic fields (up to 12 T).

    Required qualifications
A suitable background for candidates is a M.Sc. in Physics or Engineering Physics with a strong interest in experimental Solid State Physics and nanofabrication techniques. Computer programming skills in (MatLab and LabVIEW, in particular) and experience of working in a clean-room environment are the merits.

    PhD Student Position in Optoelectronics

    Reference number REF 2010/55

    Application deadline 2010-05-01
The Photonics Laboratory at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2), with about 25 members, conducts application oriented research in the areas of optoelectronics and fibre optics, directed primarily towards the development of new material, device and system technologies for optical communication, measurements and sensing.
Research on semiconductor lasers, which are key components in modern optical communication and sensing systems, started at Chalmers already in the early 1980's. Today we master everything from laser design, epitaxial growth and laser fabrication to laser characterization and system evaluation. We are in a world leading position in certain areas, including lasers for high capacity data communication links (multi-mode) and access networks (single-mode) with record performance in terms of modulation bandwidth, transmission capacity and high-temperature performance. We also develop lasers for high power/short pulse generation and photonic THz generation and light emitting diodes for deep-UV wavelengths. We participate in several European projects and work closely with academic and industrial partners world-wide.
To further strengthen our efforts on semiconductor lasers we will now expand our team with a new PhD student working primarily on high speed lasers for short reach optical communication links and interconnects.

    Job description
We seek a PhD student to work in a team of senior researchers and other PhD students with complementary skills and tasks. After being trained in device fabrication using state-of-the-art equipment in a clean room environment, the new PhD student will actively participate in the fabrication and characterization of high speed lasers. This also includes system level experiments. A limited amount of efforts in laser design and modelling is also expected. Much of the work will be conducted in close collaboration with external partners within European and other projects.
    Required qualifications
Master of Science degree in Engineering Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering or equivalent. Solid knowledge in the areas of semiconductors, electromagnetic fields, optoelectronics and photonics is required. Any experience from device fabrication in a clean room environment and device characterization, including high frequency measurements, is a merit.
