    Job description

Project: 'Bayesian nonparametrics for diffusion processes'.
Diffusion processes are natural statistical models for many phenomena. Currently, these processes are especially popular to model financial time series. Estimating unknown parameters in the drift and/or diffusion function is a challenging and important problem. We aim to construct and analyse statistical procedures using Bayesian analysis. Especially in the nonparametric case, not much is known about such procedures, e.g., convergence rates are not known. The corresponding computational problem has recently received some attention, but a completely satisfactory solution is still unavailable. Depending on the candidate’s interests, the focus in this project may be either on the theoretical study of the procedures or on the development of fast and efficient algorithms.
Extensions of the present setup include stochastic volatility models, the multivariate setting, and models driven by a Levy process instead of a Brownian motion.

The candidate will write a PhD thesis on problems related to the project description and will have minor teaching duties in the area of probability and statistics.

The position is funded by the STAR (stochastics) cluster of the Dutch Science Foundation NWO and Delft University of Technology. The project is a cooperation between Delft University of Technology and EURANDOM.

    Job description

The goal of this project is to study and establish the physical mechanisms for sensing bacteria in water based on a nanocavity in a two-dimensional photonic crystal (PhC). Such a crystal is a periodic modulation of the dielectric constant, with a modulation period comparable to the wavelength of light. The nanocavity is an ultra-small resonator for electromagnetic waves inside the crystal, leading to a greatly enhanced and locally concentrated optical field. This property can be applied for both optical trapping of bacteria in water and their subsequent identification by Raman spectroscopy. These functionalities of PhC cavities will lead to rapid on-line sensing and identification of bacteria in water. The candidate will concentrate on the Raman spectroscopy part of the project. He/she will closely collaborate with the PhD student concentrating on trapping with a PhC nanocavity. We look for experimental physicists (MSc) with a background in photonics or solid-state physics and with an affinity for bio-sensing. Experience in device fabrication is helpful.

PhD position (FOM) in Nanomagnetism & STM

    Department of Applied Physics

    Date off
    30-06-2010
    Reference number
    V34.1021
− sensing and switching ‘hidden’ nanomagnets –

at the group Physics of Nanostructures, Department of Applied Physics
The Department of Applied Physics at Eindhoven University of Technology has 15 professorial chairs with about 65 academic and 60 technical specialists, as well as 110 graduate and 375 undergraduate students. The leading research themes cover functional materials, transport physics, and plasma physics and radiation technology. The department has extensive national and international partnerships, including industrial partners. It participates in several national (top) research schools, and in two national top technology institutes: Dutch Polymer Institute (DPI) and Materials Innovation Institute (M2i). Eindhoven University of Technology is one of the three participants in the Dutch 3TU Federation of Universities of Technology.
In nanophysics great advances have been made in using scanning probe microscopy to image and tune surface phenomena with ultimate resolution. Very recently, it is suggested that these tools are able to ‘look below the surface’ by exploiting anisotropically propagating electrons, see, e.g. Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 066101 (2009) and Science 27, 1190 (2009).
Inspired by these new concepts, the group Physics of Nanostructures at TU/e will focus on two appealing scanning probe microscopy experiments addressing forefront developments within spintronics, viz. (i) nanoscale sensing of embedded (‘hidden’) ferromagnetic nano-objects using spin-dependent quantum-well resonances of a strongly focused electron beam, and (ii) magnetic switching of buried magnetic entities via the spin-transfer torque carried by focused spin-polarized electrons. It is believed that the present approach will not only allow for the discovery of new phenomena, but may also accelerate the implementation of novel concepts within next-generation miniaturized (spin)electronic devices. Experimentally, this project will strongly rely on a commercial low-temperature scanning-tunneling-microscopy tool at TU/e, which also includes extended MBE deposition including x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and a tool for e-beam flashing of metallic tips.
    Tasks
The OIO candidate is expected to fully operate the low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy tool, and will be responsible for developing the novel imaging and manipulation method. The first objective it setup proof-of-principle experiments of spin imaging of ‘hidden’ magnetic clusters in the true nanometer regime. In a later stage, new directions may be explored, such as the use of spin-torque and Rashba spin-orbit coupling to manipulate the cluster magnetization.
    Requirements
We are searching for an excellent candidate with a (nearly) completed Master of Science in experimental/applied physics. A background directly related to the project (such as condensed matter physics, scanning tunneling microscopy, nanomagnetism, spintronics) will be appreciated.
    Appointment and Salary
These positions offer full-time employment for 4 years, with an initial evaluation period. The monthly (gross) salary will be approx. 2000 Euro in the first year and increase to approx. 2600 Euro in the fourth year, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement of the Dutch Universities. The TU/e offers attractive labor conditions, please see http://w3.tue.nl/en/services/dpo/ for details.
    Information
For further information please contact Prof. dr. ir. H.J.M. Swagten (phone: +31 40 247 5778, of the group Physics of Nanostructures, Department of Applied Physics, Eindhoven University of Technology.
    Application
Please include contact information, a CV, copies of transcripts/grade-sheets, the contact information of two or more references, as well as a copy of the Master thesis and (p)reprints of prior publications, if available.
Initial consideration will be given to applications received prior to March 1st, 2010. Thereafter, applications will be reviewed on an as-needed basis.

PhD Position development of a micro reactor

Department of Applied Physics, Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry
    Date off
    31-05-2010
    Reference number
    V34.1042
A PhD position is available in the group "Elementary Processes in Gas Discharges", Department of Applied Physics, TU Eindhoven, The Netherlands. The successful candidate shall be involved in the development of a micro reactor for the epoxidation of propene using a micro plasma. This plasma will be a pulsed dielectric barrier type discharge, which allows for high conversion efficiencies at very low electrical power. The aim is to develop an integrated system where the hydrogen peroxide is produced from hydrogen and oxygen gas in a pulsed microplasma in a dedicated microreactor. This hydrogen peroxide is then immediately used in a second step in a second microreactor for the epoxidation of propene. Besides optical spectroscopy to analyze the plasma an existing numerical simulation model will be used to optimize the process parameters.
A close collaboration with researchers from the Department of Chemical Engineering of the TU/e will aim at using this integrated concept for a clean, safe, simple, and efficient production of propene oxide that can be scaled to industrial capacities.
Ideally the candidate should have a degree in physics or a related discipline, a profound background in experimental (plasma) physics and/or optical spectroscopy is preferred.
This position offers full-time employment for 4 years, with an initial evaluation period.
