    at Photonics and Semiconductor Nanophysics Department of Applied Physics

    The Department of Applied Physics at Eindhoven University of Technology has 15 professorial chairs with about 65 academic and 60 technical specialists, as well as 110 graduate and 375 undergraduate students. The leading research themes cover functional materials, transport physics, and plasma physics and radiation technology. The department has extensive national and international partnerships, including industrial partners. It participates in several national (top) research schools, and in two national top technology institutes: Dutch Polymer Institute (DPI) and Materials Innovation Institute (M2i). Eindhoven University of Technology is one of the three participants in the Dutch 3TU Federation of Universities of Technology.

    Tasks

    We offer a PhD position for 4 years in a European research project investigating the possibilities to use type-II quantum dots in a 2D electronic system for data storage. The task to be done in Eindhoven is first to characterize the structures grown in Lancaster concerning the geometry, position and chemical composition of the quantum dots. This will mainly be done using cross sectional scanning tunneling microscopy XSTM at room temperature. A next step will be to study the electronic properties of the quantum dots and its interaction with the surrounding heterostructure by means of scanning tunneling spectroscopy, also in XSTM geometry. For this work our lab offers an STM operating at low temperature (down to 5K). These 2 parts of the project are rather straightforward, whereas the following tasks will be challenging and might require optimization of the experimental setup. In order to avoid the restriction to a cleaved quantum dot we want to detect scanning tunneling spectroscopy on capped quantum dots in an in-plane geometry. The challenge here will be to handle the capping in order to prepare a sufficiently clean surface and to still be able to address the electronic states of the quantum dots. An even more challenging last part of the project is to detect tip induced luminescence in order to independently map the electronic states of the quantum dots. This task has to cope with the detection of low numbers of photons since type-II quantum dots are needed in order to store data over sufficiently long periods of time.
    Technically the PhD project is based on scanning probes, mainly STM and scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Since the STM’s are operated in ultra high vacuum the candidate must have a strong attitude in experimental physics.
    The European framework of the project will offer nice opportunities to interact with colleagues abroad, from e.g. the UK and from Germany.
    Requirements

    We welcome applications from candidates with a Master degree and an excellent academic record in physics (condensed matter or optical physics). Candidates must prove a strong attitude towards experimental physics. Candidates with engineering or material science background will not be considered.
    Appointment and Salary

    This position offers full-time employment for 4 years, with an initial evaluation period. The monthly (gross) salary will be approx. 2000 Euro in the first year and increase to approx. 2600 Euro in the fourth year, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement of the Dutch Universities.     The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science provides undergraduate and MSc programs in Mathematics and in Computer Science. The department has research collaborations with other departments at the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven as well as with a large number of other universities and companies, both at home and abroad. The Department has approximately 350 employees and more than 700 students.
    The CREST project (Collusion RESistant Tracing) investigates the resilience of digital watermarks against coalition attacks. A watermark is a sequence of hidden data embedded in audio/video, and is intended e.g. to trace the origin and distribution of files. A collusion attack is an attempt by multiple people, who each possess a differently marked version of the same file, to remove or distort the watermark.
    The cat-and-mouse game of attack and defense gives rise to some highly nontrivial mathematics, involving combinatorics, coding theory, information theory and cryptography. The practical side is equally complex, with much work in progress on attack strategies, signal processing attacks, optimal code constructions, efficient decoding algorithms, and embedding methods.
    CREST is a joint project of EIPSI (Eindhoven Institute for the Protection of Systems and Information) and industrial partners. The aim of the CREST project is to make progress on both the mathematical understanding and practical realization of collusion resistant watermarking.
    Tasks

    We have openings for two PhD students.
    One PhD student will do research in the Coding & Crypto group, the other in the Security group.
    These groups are located on the same floor and together form the EIPSI Institute. We expect a significant amount of overlap in the research of the two students.

    PhD scholarship


    A 3-year PhD scholarship is available at DTU Fotonik, Department of Photonics Engineering from January 1, 2010.

    Project
    The project is part of a € 700,000 project entitled Northern Light Emitting Diode Initiative (NORLED) supported by Nordic Energy Research. The NORLED project gathers participants from Sweden, Norway, Germany and Denmark. NORLED collaborates with Meijo University in Japan at which the blue LED was first developed. The overall objective of the NORLED project is to develop an innovative and industrially feasible LED technology with pure white light quality and aimed for general lighting.



    The NORLED objectives are:
    • Acquisition of new scientific knowledge in growth of fluorescent SiC material for white LEDs.
    • Production of experimental white emitting diode device with the target luminous efficacy of 100 lm/W.
    • Evaluation of innovative technology from scientific, economic and social points of view.
    The project is experimental in nature. The candidate will make use of our state-of-art facilities in both cleanroom and labs to:
    1. Make optical characterization of fluorescent SiC grown by the fast sublimation growth technology from partners for material optimization and work on theory of the mechanism of luminescence.
    2. Fabricate and characterize SiC LED chips based on the optimized material from partners.

    Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.

    Job description

    Operations at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport are sensitive to critical weather conditions such as fog, low level clouds, heavy rainfall and strong winds, and sudden changes in these conditions. Flight safety and an efficient use of airport capacity require precise information on these weather parameters at a local scale. Climate change will have an impact on weather variability at Schiphol Airport and on the frequency and intensity at which extreme events will occur. With this project, a new, high-resolution weather forecast model HARMONIE (www.hirlam.org) will be used to investigate the consequences of climate change on the weather parameters that are important for Schiphol Airport. The project aims to evaluate and improve HARMONIE’s capability to represent and resolve mesoscale systems over the Netherlands, e.g. isolated convective cells, cold-air outbreaks, squall lines and the precipitation associated with these systems. Model evaluation and improvement of HARMONIE will be based on: 1) idealised simulations of cumulus convection that will be compared with Large Eddy Simulations results and 2) realistic cases as observed over the Netherlands using the extensive observational network available. This research will be conducted in collaboration with the Weather Research and Development department of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) and Wageningen University.
    Requirements

    Applicants should have an MSc degree with a background in meteorology, physics, astronomy or mathematics and preferably a strong interest in turbulence, statistical mechanics and numerical methods. It would be an advantage to have programming experience in Linux and Fortran and experience in working with large numerical models.
    Conditions of employment

    The successful candidate will be employed full-time by TU Delft for a fixed period of 4 years within which he or she is expected to write a dissertation leading to a doctoral degree (PhD thesis). The starting salary for a PhD is €2042 gross per month increasing to a maximum of €2612 gross per month in the fourth year.     Improved understanding of short and long-term effects of CO2 and impurities in the CO2 stream on the chemistry of fluids and minerals in the storage formation, the cap rock and in shallower geology is crucial. Experiments should be performed to assess geochemical reactions in reservoir, caprocks and wellbore materials. These results can be used to calibrate reaction-transport modelling aimed at predicting long term behaviour. Another important research topic is to develop up-scaling procedures and guidelines for calculation of dissolution of CO2 in mobile fluid phases for different numerical grids and geological heterogeneities. Laboratory measurements of CO2 behaviour in rocks, including capillary trapping of residual (not mobile) CO2 saturation are planned.

    PhD Research Fellowship in Mineral Deposit Geology (IVT-112/09)


    One PhD research fellowship is vacant at the Department of Geology and Mineral Resources Engineering in Mineral Deposit Geology.

    For this position we are looking for an enthusiastic junior scientist with an MSc (or the equivalent) in one or more of the following disciplines: ore-geology, mineral deposit geology, mineralogy, igneous and metamorphic petrology.

    In our research group we are particularly interested in the processes that control trace element incorporation into the crystallographic structure of quartz. Our research shows that trace elements in quartz can be used much more actively in the interpretation of geological processes and, not least, in showing where and how precious intermediate to high purity quartz (IHPQ) deposits form. IHPQ is an attractive industrial mineral that, for example, is used in the production of solar cell silicon.

    NTNU and the Geological Survey of Norway comprise the core of the research group, but a part of the study may commence at relevant foreign research facilities.

    The successful candidate will undertake detailed studies of fluid-quartz interaction processes in pegmatitic and hydrothermal systems. Microthermometry and laser ablation ICP-MS analysis of fluid inclusions will be used actively in the research project together with other micro-characterization techniques. Field work/sampling is planned to start spring/summer 2010.

    Interested students, that expect to finish their MSc before February 1, 2010, are encouraged to apply.     The fellowship is awarded for a total of 4 years including 25% teaching of a lab-course in mineral identification and petrography by optical light microscopy for undergraduate students. Ability to communicate in a Scandinavian language is an advantage.

    Conditions of appointment: PhD students follow code 1017, grade 45 - 51, gross NOK 355 400 to NOK 394 200 per year (before tax). PhD students are normally remunerated at wage level 45. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross salary.

    Engagement as a PhD candidate is done in accordance with current appointment regulations with supplementary rules in force giving guidelines for scholarship appointments in universities and university colleges. The goal of each of the announced positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants are obliged to engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement. A contract of employment will be set up for the engagement period regulating the rights and duties of the PhD student.

    The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants.
