Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology
Department of Design Engineering and Materials

Ph.D. Candidate in Novel coating and surface treatment for improved wear resistance (IVT-118/09)

Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology has responsibillity for the following disciplins: civil and environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, petroleum engineering, geology and mineral resources engineering and marine technology. The Faculty has 10 Departments (http://www.ntnu.no/ivt), about 750 employees, 3000 Master students, and about. 400 PhD candidates.
Nowadays, coatings are extensively used for protecting substrates (mainly metals and alloys) in many different industrial applications. For several of these applications, it is expected that they protect the substrate against corrosion attack, wear, fatigue, thermal degradation, etc. The mechanical properties of coatings/materials are extremely related to the wear resistance. The use of classical mechanical methods have been widely used to measure mechanical properties of coatings such as hardness, elastic modulus, residual stress, coating fracture toughness and interfacial fracture toughness (or adhesion energy). There is a need to develop a suitable method to measure the mechanical properties of thin coatings. The proposed method is based on measuring the properties locally, deforming the coating on a very small scale, thus avoiding the influence from the substrate. A convenient way to accomplish this is by indentation testing on a nanometer scale, commonly referred to as nano-indentation, combined with scratch testing.

The use of nanoindentation is growing due to the relative simplicity, but its real potential is still to develop. The novelty of the proposed project is to combine nanoindentation techniques with the Focused Ion Beam (FIB) milling technique. FIB is a unique technique suitable to produce 3D structures in a nano-scale into the surface of a coating or material by using high energy ion beams that can erode localized areas within the sample. By controlling the eroded area it is possible to reproduce any mechanical sample shape, which can be tested by using the nanoindenter.
This combination of both techniques opens a novel and unique wide range of opportunities to characterize the real mechanical properties of the coatings. A deeper knowledge of these properties would allow to a better use of coatings, especially in those applications where high loads must be applied.
This PhD is linked to the FME «Offshore Wind».

Ph.D candiate in Long term properties of polymers (IVT-122/09)

Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology has responsibillity for the following disciplins: civil and environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, petroleum engineering, geology and mineral resources engineering and marine technology. The Faculty has 10 Departments (http://www.ntnu.no/ivt), about 750 employees, 3000 Master students, and about. 400 PhD candidates.
    Long term properties of polymers
This project is part of a larger program within the composite and polymers group to investigate long term properties of composites and polymers. Applications are mainly related to energy generation and transport (conventional and renewable).
Long term properties like fatigue and creep are influenced by the external environment. Chemicals diffuse into the material, cause a local reaction and the byproducts need to diffuse out. The local reaction on the atomic scale creates a change of the global engineering constants. This project shall model this behavior for polymers. The effects of fatigue, creep and external environment shall be combined to a unified approach. Test programs need to be designed and carried out to develop and verify the models.
Testing and modeling will be challenging and go beyond standard procedures. You need to have excellent theoretical and experimental skills. Creativity and innovative thinking will be required to reach the goals. You will acquire a wide range of experimental skills and model development.

PhD scholarship in risk and reliability assessment of marine renewable energy facilities (IVT-119/09)

Facilities for wind, wave and tidal current energy are subjected to severe dynamic loading in a corrosive environment. They are subjected to loads that can cause overload and deterioration of the structure or energy conversion system, including failure modes associated with possible automatic control systems involved. An important design consideration is to ensure that the system is robust, i.e. small damages do not escalate into significant or total losses. The purpose of the present project is to establish a risk and reliability methodology for assessing the safety of facilities for ocean energy and especially critically examine the importance of robust design of such systems subjected to fatigue, wear and corrosion degradation; with due account of operational aspects of machinery components as well as a relevant inspection, monitoring and repair strategy. Case studies for application of the methodology will be selected in close contact with the industry partners. The results will form recommendations for the development of future standards and guidelines.

The research will take place in an international research environment in CeSOS, and involve several researchers and PhD candidates in the offshore wind centre Nowitech and the EU network Wavetrain2 and other programmes.

The PhD candidate must have an MSc degree in marine technology, mechanical or civil engineering or another relevant field. 1 PhD fellowship in Chemical Engineering (Palladium based membranes in catalytic reactions) (NT 61/09)

At Department of Chemical Engineering, Petrochemistry and Catalysis group, 1 PhD Research fellowship is available under the project «Design of novel Pd-alloy membranes with controlled composition, homogeneity and nanostructure for hydrogen production under harsh conditions». The project is financed by the Research Council of Norway and managed by SINTEF, with the Colorado School of Mines, USA as the third research partner.

The project has been awarded by the Research Council of Norway to SINTEF (www.sintef.no), with the Colorado School of Mines (CSM), Golden, Colorado, USA (www.mines.edu) and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) (www.ntnu.no) as research partners. The PhD fellowship is affiliated with the Department of Chemical Engineering, Petrochemistry and Catalysis group (KINCAT), NTNU, Norway (http://www.ntnu.no/aboutntnu/faculti...ikp/ikp_kincat). Opportunities exist for performing research in Oslo, Norway, and Boulder, Colorado, as well as in Trondheim, Norway.

Pd-based alloys are promising membrane candidates for application in membrane reactors. A main drawback has been the material cost, which is related to the thickness (>20 μm for commercial membranes). SINTEF has developed and protected manufacturing technology for membranes with thickness down to 1 μm that significantly improves flux and reduces materials costs. Further challenges include inhibition, or flux reduction, from species that occur in relevant reactant/product mixtures in hydrogen production from hydrocarbons or biomass, such as carbon monoxide and sulphur compounds. Recent research breakthroughs achieved by the partners indicate opportunities for improved control of such inhibition.

The main objective of the project is «to understand critical features related to Pd-alloy membrane stability in steam reforming and water-gas shift reactions, which will enable technology development for broad use in hydrogen production». The PhD fellowship is directed towards studies of Pd-based membranes under steam reforming and WGS conditions, with particular focus of establishing the connection between composition and/or pre-treatment, and the surface phenomena involved in hydrogen transport and inhibition. Novel Pd-alloy compositions will be prepared by magnetron sputtering, targeting to improve CO and H2S tolerance and temperature stability. The state-of-the-art SINTEF two-stage Pd-alloy membrane technology, based on the magnetron sputtering technique provides a basis for breakthrough development in this respect. Reaction laboratories are available and kinetic modelling may be included in the research. Collaboration on and utilization of relevant synthesis (sputtering) and characterization competence and infrastructure (e.g. AFM, XPS, TEM) are part of the project.

A multidisciplinary approach is envisaged, and a suitable background for the candidate is a MSc in chemical engineering and catalysis, inorganic chemistry and materials science or physics. Experimental training is advantageous.

Further information can be obtained from Associate Professor Hilde Venvik, Department of Chemical Engineering, NTNU, e-mail: hilde.venvik@chemeng.ntnu.no, Tel +47 73592831.

For more Information about the Department please look at our web page http://www.ntnu.no/kjempros/english

GOA/2004/03 Weak interactions / WITCH experiment

    50000403v233
    Promoter: Nathal Severijns

    details
Description: This PhD position is related to the GOA project “Nuclei under extremes”. The study of basic properties of the weak interaction in nuclear beta decay is the central topic. For this, the energy spectrum of nuclei recoiling after their beta decay in a Penning ion trap will be measured with the WITCH retardation spectrometer at the ISOLDE facility at CERN (Geneva, Switzerland). The research work will include the use and further optimisation of the WITCH set-up
(http://fys.kuleuven.be/iks/zi/witch.php), the performing of spectrum measurements with trapped radioactive nuclei and the analysis and interpretation of the results. Of special importance will be the study of systematic effects so as to optimise the precision that can be reached. The results will contribute to the testing of the standard model for the elementary particles and their interactions.
Active involvement in the development of other, future research projects with the same setup is appreciated.
The project is embedded in an international collaboration (Kath. Univ. Leuven, Univ. Muenster, ISOLDE-CERN, Academy of Sciences-Prague, GSI-Darmstadt).

Key words: low energy weak interactions, beta decay, physics beyond the standard model, penning ion traps

    Latest application date: 2009-12-15

    Financing: available

Type of Position: scholarship or salary

    Source of Funding: GOA/10/010 project

Duration of the Project : 4 years

Research group: Department of Physics and Astronomy

Remarks: The succesful candidate will be required to work full-time at CERN and to live in the Geneva area.
