    Banks and insurance companies try to make use of increasingly large volumes of customer-related data as new in-house and external data sources become available for analysis. This position is part of a larger project with the overall goal to develop foundations and techniques for next generation big data analytics, facilitating the development of a wide range of applications in banking and insurance, including but not limited to fraud detection, loan default prediction, prediction of extreme (health-insurance) claims and data-driven product development with a special emphasis on modeling, changing environments and endogeneity problems.

    The overarching theme is to efficiently combine large amounts of data and expert knowledge. We bring three major data-science expertise areas into this multidisciplinary project: predictive analytics, modern statistics, and visual analytics.

    The joint NWO-funded project of Tilburg University, TU Eindhoven, Rabobank and Achmea is led by prof. dr. Mykola Pechenizkiy (predictive analytics), prof. dr. Bas Werker (financial statistics and econometrics) and prof. dr. Jack van Wijk (visualization). The joint project features 2 PostDoc openings and 2 PhD openings; one of each at Tilburg University and one of each at TU Eindhoven.

    One Postdoc and one PhD focusing on modern big data econometrics and statistics will join the Department of Econometrics and OR at Tilburg University. The focus of these two openings is to develop new econometric and statistical expertise and methods to improve banking and insurance practices. They will closely collaborate and spend significant time within the Data Science teams of Rabobank and Achmea and we envisage close collaboration with the Department of Computer Science at TU Eindhoven.

    Work duties
    The position comprises participation in research on Logistics and Supply Chain Management. The area deals with design, implementation, organisation and control of all processes involved in the material and service flow along the entire processing chain.

    The research will mainly focus on material handling and warehouse operation in Omni-Channel Logistics.
    A Hakon Swenson foundation project, focusing on the Omni-Channel challenges of fast moving consumer goods, provides part of the financing for the doctoral position. The doctoral student will also work closely to a similar project funded by the Swedish Retail and Wholesale Council. Other research performed by doctoral students and supervisors at the division includes work on Production Strategies, Global Production and Logistics Networks, Measurement of Change Management, Short Food Supply Chains, Supply Chain Risk Management and Humanitarian Logistics. Supervisors at the division includes professor Andreas Norrman, professor Jan Olhager, associate professor Dag Näslund and senior lecturer Joakim Kembro.
    The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties will also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).

    Department of Industrial Economis and Tchonology Management
    Postdoctoral Fellow position in Sustainablility Management

    The Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management (IØT) is looking for a postdoctoral fellow for research projects within Sustainability Management, to be hired for a period of 2 and a half years, with an option for an additional year of duty work, and starting as soon as possible in the spring of 2017.

    The postdoctoral fellow will primarily work on two externally financed research projects: ECHOES and SISVI.

    ECHOES is three-year project funded by the EU H2020 program and coordinated by NTNU with 14 partners from 9 different countries. Its scope is to analyze acceptance of the European energy union and measures to carbon neutral European societies in three technological foci (smart energy technology, electric mobility and energy use in buildings) from the micro- (individual decision-making as part of collectives), meso- (energy cultures and lifestyles) and macro-perspective (formal social units like companies or governments). ECHOES combines psychology, sociology, political science, and economics in a multimethod approach. Within the project, focus-group interviews, individual interviews, national surveys, psychological experiments and a 30 country transnational survey will be conducted. The postdoctoral fellow will primarily contribute to the research on formal social units.

    SISVI is a four-year competence building project financed by the Norwegian Research Council. SISVI aims to provide Norwegian industrial firms with four crucial building blocks they can use when developing their own unique competitive strategy. These are internationalization, innovation, interactions in networks and supply chains, integration and implementation. The purpose is to develop knowledge that strengthens the industry’s long-term competitive capabilities in a way consistent with the concept of shared value. The project is coordinated by NTNU and carried out together with Sintef Raufoss Manufacturing AS and several Norwegian companies and public sector organizations. The postdoctoral fellow will primarily contribute to the research on interactions in networks and supply chains.

    In addition to ECHOES and SISVI, the postdoctoral fellow will also work on and develop other, related research projects at IØT.


    The position as a postdoctoral fellow is a fixed-term position with the primary goal of qualifying for work in professional academic chair positions. The position period is two and a half years, with the possibility for an additional year consisting of duty work for IØT. The position will be placed in the Operations Management section at IØT. Professor Luitzen de Boer will be supervisor of the postdoctoral fellow.


    Information about the Department
    The department has 23 professors, 20 associate professors and more than 50 PhD candidates, postdoctoral fellows and adjunct professors belonging to four research groups:

    1. Managerial Economics, Finance and Operations Research,
    2. Operations Management,
    3. Strategy and Business Development, and
    4. Health, Safety and Environment Management.

    Qualifications
    Personal qualifications will be ascribed high importance in the selection process. The requirement for the position is a completed Norwegian PhD in a relevant field, a completed foreign PhD approved as equivalent to a Norwegian PhD in a relevant field, or competence to an equivalent level documented with scientific work of the same extent and quality.

    It is mandatory that the candidate can document a strong background in qualitative research methods, experience with various types of empirical data gathering, the ability to work in a team of researchers in a dynamic and demanding project setting, as well as the ability to write, publish and present scientific papers and reports at an international level. Fluency in both English and Norwegian (written and spoken) is required. In addition, project management skills and the ability to actively involve practitioners from industry and/or public sector organizations in research projects is required for the position.

    Documented experience with research in one or more of the technological foci of the ECHOES project (smart energy technology, electric mobility and energy use in buildings) will be considered positively in the selection process.

    4PhD and 2 PDEng positions Optimization of healthcare logistics


    Complex care pathways require several outpatient clinic consultations, laboratory tests, imaging, assessment, multidisciplinary meetings, hospitalization, and post-operative follow-up. Complex care processes may be spread over many "episodes of care" and involve as many patient’s trips to the care center. In addition to that complexity, key resources on the patient pathway like operating rooms or diagnostic imaging face complex demand patterns (variability in demand, elective vs. non elective cases) that must be addressed through a robust session management system to match access expectation from all the healthcare professionals and the patient alike.
    In the PhD and PDEng projects we aim to develop a systematic approach to optimize a patient’s journey, taking into account a large number of constraints and optimal usage of institution resources. We incorporate the diagnostic phase (special emphasis on one-stop-shop concepts to shorten patient LOS in care trajectory and reduce hospital visits), surgical episode and follow up phase. The project involves tactical and operational levels of planning & scheduling; on a tactical level a mathematical model will be developed to allocate capacity to patient groups and determine optimal patient routing (planning). On operational level day to day clinic operations will be optimized using dynamic patient scheduling.
    The PhD and PDEng projects will be carried out in close collaboration with the following hospitals: IHU Strasbourg, Jeroen Boschziekenhuis, Sint Maartenskliniek, VU Medical Center, AMC Amsterdam, Erasmus MC, and the following industrial partners Asito, Medtronic, Ortec, Rhythm and Roche.

    You have a master’s degree in mathematics, industrial engineering, econometrics, physics, or a similar area with excellent skills in operations research and excellent grades. You have affinity for stochastics, statistics, and operations research. You are creative, ambitious, able to work independently, and you enjoy doing mathematics. You are fluent in English.

    To further strengthen our research and advanced teaching in the field of innovation, entrepreneurship and management of intellectual capital, we seek one or two candidates for a PhD student position. The position is full time. Our research program addresses how and why industrial firms and entrepreneurial knowledge-intensive firms use knowledge to compete globally. Innovation and entrepreneurship takes into consideration issues of firm strategies and competencies, set within a systemic perspective of industrial dynamics, public policy and innovation systems. The PhD projects will be run in connection with existing research projects, such as industrial dynamics, innovation system governance, and knowledge-based entrepreneurship. The research includes large scale datasets as well as case-studies, as related to the theoretical literature and implications for firms and public policy.
    Eligibility

    Personal abilities are important for the position. We are looking for talented and motivated individuals, who are able to work independently as well as in a collaborative research team. Candidates with a background in e.g. business administration, economics, innovation and industrial management, technology management, entrepreneurship and other relevant fields are welcome to apply.

    The applicant must meet the requirements for general eligibility. The qualifications for education on a doctoral level are: degree in advanced level, at least 240 university points, of which 60 are on an advanced level, or in another way acquired similar knowledge.

    The applicant must also meet the requirements for special eligibility with at least 30 credits, including 15 credits as part of a thesis within the area of innovation and entrepreneurship at the advanced level.

    Project description
    The Entrepreneurship section at Umeå School of Business and Economics have newly started a project which looks into the development and diffusion of eco-innovations. More precisely, this project investigates how competence development programs support small- and medium-sized firms’ possibilities to, via new business models, adopt digital technologies, e.g., 3D-manufacturing, while improving environmental impacts. We are looking for a PhD student who wants to conduct research within the project and study the development of the firms’ participating in this competence development program. An important dimension of this development concerns how these firms, via cooperation and competition, i.e., coopetition, can support or hinder the eco-innovation. The competence development program will start spring 2017 and is run by a project leader associated with Umeå School of Business and Economics. This close association provides the student with excellent access to the program’s activities, participants and processes. Moreover, the student will have good opportunities to, within the frames of the research project’s purpose, independently shape a doctoral project and define a research question.

    Besides being closely associated with the project group, you will, as a graduate student, be a part of the Entrepreneurship section together with other graduate students, senior researchers, professors, and international associates.
    Work description
    As a PhD student you should take courses and do an independent research project. You are expected to contribute to the research environment through active participation in seminars, conferences and other research activities that support your research as well as the research environment. Within the research group a number of studies are conducted with researchers from other countries. The work may therefore involve some travelling and involvement in such partnerships.
    Requirements and qualification
    The general requirement for admission is 240 ECT credits, of which 60 ECT credits are at the advanced level, and a degree at the advanced level.
    The specific requirement for admission is that the applicant has at least 90 ECT credits in Business Administration including an independent project comprising at least 15 credits.
    Selection among applicants who meet the admission requirements are made with respect to the estimated ability to complete the program, with particular emphasis on:
    • academic performance and the ability to keep time frames
    • scientific maturity and quality of the research outlined
    • personal qualifications, communication and cooperation skills
    In addition, priority is given to good analytical skills, good knowledge of Swedish and/or English and equal representation of different genders. Additional merits are courses in sustainability or related subjects, one or more degrees with specialization in entrepreneurship, and/or management, and documented ability to write scientific or popular science reports.
