SOM, the graduate school and research institute of the Faculty of Economics and Business has two PhD positions available.

    Job description

This project is part of a NWO VIDI grant awarded to Prof. Floor Rink. Although recent fraud and remuneration cases has led to public calls for more stringent management regulation, research shows that strict regulation is not always enforceable nor desirable. This project therefore focuses on the social context in which management practices are embedded, which is largely determined by the relations top managers have with the supervisory bodies who monitor them; internal supervisory boards within their firm and external central market regulators outside their firm (e.g. Central Banks). The overall goal is to systematically examine how effective both supervisors are in influencing management decisions.
The aim of the first PhD project is to study whether the influence of internal supervisory boards on management decisions is contingent on several intergroup work structures suggested in the economic literature (e.g. two-tier systems and director mobility). The aim of the second PhD project is to examine whether the influence of external supervisory bodies depends on the communication strategies that psychological literature proposes to use in intergroup settings (e.g. comprehensive rule framing). Given, however, that internal and external supervisory boards often monitor management decisions in conjunction, both PhD projects may also include studies that explore their combined influence on management decisions.
Both PhD projects will include experimental, survey and archival research. They will be part of the SOM research programme on Organizational Behavior: https://www.rug.nl/research/hrm-ob/
and of the signature area on “Board Effectiveness”: https://www.rug.nl/research/som-ri/signature-areas/board-effectiveness/ Within this signature area, researchers from different disciplines within FEB (i.e. Economics and Finance, Management, Accounting and Organizational Behaviour) conduct joint research on the conditions that will make management boards effective, both at the micro- and macro-economic level.

    Qualifications

We are looking for a candidate with a master degree - preferably a research master - in management, social sciences (psychology, sociology) or economics. The ideal candidate is experienced in working with quantitative research methods (experimental, survey and/or archival research) and has some knowledge of the scientific literature on intergroup relations in organizational settings and/or management board dynamics. Candidates should be excellent in academic writing, should have excellent communication skills and should be able to cooperate in a multidisciplinary team. Given the need to closely interact with national stakeholders, the candidate should preferably master the Dutch language.

    Conditions of employment

The University of Groningen gross monthly starting salary is € 2,191 which increases yearly to a maximum of € 2,801. In addition there are a 8% holiday allowance and a 8.3% end-of-year bonus. PhD position Why some auditors thrive while others struggle (1.0 fte) (217046)

    Organisation

Since its foundation in 1614, the University of Groningen has enjoyed an international reputation as a dynamic and innovative centre of higher education offering high-quality teaching and research. Belonging to the best research universities of Europe and joining forces with prestigious partner universities and networks, the University of Groningen is truly an international place of knowledge.

FEB's programmes, academic staff and research do well on various excellence ranking lists.
SOM, the graduate school and research institute of the Faculty of Economics and Business has one PhD position available fot the project “Why some auditors thrive while others struggle: The effects of multiple team memberships on audit quality”.

    Job description

This project is part of a grant of the Foundation for Auditing Research: http://foundationforauditingresearch.org/ awarded to Dr Reggy Hooghiemstra, Prof. Floor Rink and Dr Dennis Veltrop. The overall aim of the project is to develop a multidisciplinary approach regarding the consequences of multiple team memberships on audit quality. The research will be primarily conducted within Dutch audit firms, firms that employ auditors who verify the financial statements of large organizations (including stock listed firms).
Auditors working within audit firms are generally engaged in multiple audits at the same time implying that they, for instance, have to work at different locations and switch between teams continuously. The goal of the project is to examine how working in such multiple teams affects auditors’ individual performance and the overall audit quality of audit teams, and whether these outcomes depend on environmental and individual factors (e.g. team climates, individual goal setting strategies). As such, the PhD project directly feeds into current scientific and practical discussions about workload, network and resource utilization and, ultimately, about the performance of auditing firms.
While not ruling out other research methods, the project will largely make use of survey research and archival data. The Foundation for Auditing Research will help with data collections among all the major audit firms.
The PhD project will be part of the SOM research programmes Organizational Behaviour: https://www.rug.nl/research/hrm-ob/and Innovation & Organization: https://www.rug.nl/research/io/ and will be embedded within the signature area Board Effectiveness: https://www.rug.nl/research/som-ri/signature-areas/board-effectiveness/ Within this signature area, researchers from different disciplines within FEB (i.e. Economics and Finance, Management, Accounting and Organizational Behaviour) conduct joint research on the conditions that will make management boards effective, both at the micro- and macro-economic level.
