    The candidate is expected to do research during a period of four years leading to a doctoral thesis. In addition, he or she will be involved in teaching activities. A bachelor’s or master’s degree in economics, mathematics or physics is required. The focus of the research in our group is on microeconomics, in particular, auction theory and mechanism design. We encourage applications of young researchers who want to benefit from and contribute to a stimulating environment at an internationally renowned economics department.

    The Chair of Development Economics and International Economics offers two positions as Doctoral Student (50%) to be filled by January 1, 2010.
    Job description: The vacant positions enter an interdisciplinary environment at the intersection of applied economics and political science. Our areas of expertise include macroeconomics, international economics, political economy, and international organizations – all with particular focus on economic development. Background skills in econometrics are required.

    Job profile and requirements: Candidates are expected to have an excellent university degree (master or diploma) in economics or political science with emphasis on applied methods. Proficiency in English in speaking and writing is essential. Knowledge of German is helpful but not required.



    We offer a two-year fixed-term contract, potentially renewable for another two years. As a doctoral student, you are expected to write your dissertation in an area related to the economics of international migration, human trafficking, human trafficking-related crimes (such as transnational organized crimes and corruption) and human rights. Salary is based on the collective bargaining agreement of the German federal states (TV-L, salary level 13). The position involves no teaching.

    The Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology (NT) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invite applicants for until 15 PhD research fellowships. The fellowships are open to applicants in all areas of research covered by the faculty. Further information on the faculty and its six departments is available at http://www.nt.ntnu.no .

    Applicants must have completed a master degree (MSc, MEng) or provide documentation of equivalent training in a field relevant to research pursued at one of NT’s departments, and must satisfy the formal grades requirements for admission to the PhD programmes at NTNU.

    In order to be accepted as a PhD candidate the grades of the MSc study have to be sufficiently high (in Norway: B/2.5 or better), or the applicant has to document a similar level through later scientific work.     The appointment of the PhD research fellow will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees. Applicants for the position must agree to participate in organized doctoral study programs within the period of the appointment and have to be qualified for the PhD-study. A contract will be drawn up regarding the period of appointment.

    The national labour force must reflect the composition of the population to the greatest possible extent. It is therefore a major political objective to achieve a balance of age and gender and to recruit persons with an immigrant background. Immigrants are encouraged to apply for this post. NTNU wants to increase the proportion of women in its scientific posts. Women are encouraged to apply.

    PhD fellowships at NTNU are awarded for a period of 3 years but may be prolonged for a total period of 4 years incl. 25 % of teaching duties.

    Ph.D. Scholarships in the specialisation areas of Finance and Economics

    BI Norwegian School of Management offers a four year Ph.D. programme in business administration. The programme features six areas of specialisation: Finance, Economics, Strategic Management, Marketing, Leadership and Organization in addition to Innovation and Entrepreneurship. We are pleased to announce seven Ph.D. Research Scholarship positions available for two of the areas of specialisation. One of the scholarship positions is funded through NFR. For the autumn 2010 intake we will only be accepting applications for the specialisations in:

    Finance
    Economics

    The next intake for the remaining specialisations will be in 2011. Announcements for separate scholarship positions within research projects may occur before this time.

    The four-year programme is designed for talented students who wish to pursue an international career within academia and who can contribute on the international arena with their research and publications. This is in keeping with the school’s vision of being one of the leading research business schools in Europe. Applicants must have completed a two year (120 ECTS) Master’s Degree with thesis work (preferably a Master of Science) by September 2010 to be considered for a scholarship. An average of grade B or better is required. Fifth year Master of Science students are encouraged to apply. If applicants are otherwise equally qualified, female applicants will be given preference.     Accepted applicants will be subject to rigorous mentoring and follow-up by the research faculty.

    The four-year scholarships are set according to the Norwegian State Salary Scale, and currently pay NOK 344,200 per year. The positions are linked to The Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund (Statens Pensjonskasse).The scholarships require 25% teaching responsibilities (35 teaching hours pr. year). The compulsory duties may also include other work to be decided on by the relevant department. Ph.D. students will have their place of work at BI Norwegian School of Management in Oslo, Norway.

    GERMANY: PhD Position in International Economics


    PhD position in International Economics

    The successful applicant will work within the project “The effect of international trade on job flows, wages, and unemployment: The role of search frictions and firm heterogeneity”.


    This project is funded by the Thyssen Foundation. It is co-directed by Prof. Gabriel Felbermayr at Universität Hohenheim (Stuttgart) and by Prof. Julien Prat at IAE Barcelona. The candidate should hold a graduate degree (Master or German Diplom) in economics, preferably with a background in trade theory and/or labor economics. He/she should have good quantitative skills, some training in econometrics, as well as a good command of English. The successful candidate carries out doctoral research. She/he takes part in an international cooperation between IAE Barcelona and Universität Hohenheim. She/he also benefits from the doctoral program offered by Tübingen-Hohenheim Economics e.V., from a close integration into the International Economics Group at Universität Hohenheim, and from the support offered by the FZID Recearch Center.

    The successful candidate is based in Stuttgart during academic terms. The monthly stipend is EUR 1500 net of taxes. Additional funds for travel and IT are available. A supplementary assignment as teaching assistant is possible. The contract runs for an initial period of two years, but is renewable.
