    Two Open Graduate Research Assistantships
Usama El Shamy (Environmental and Civil Engineering Department) and Paul Krueger (Mechanical Engineering Department) at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, USA announce two open Graduate Research Assistantships for their project entitled “Multiscale experimental and computational investigations of erosion-induced failure of levee systems” and recently funded by the National Science Foundation. The activities of this interdisciplinary research effort are centered around providing an experimentally validated, and thus predictive, computational research tool for the analysis and design of geotechnical systems subjected to extreme loading conditions and exploring the complex response of flood-induced failure of levee systems under representative flooding scenarios. The research includes a computational component, supervised by Prof. El Shamy, and an experimental component, supervised by Prof. Krueger. One GRA opening is available for each component, brief descriptions of which are given below.
Computational Component (Prof. El Shamy): A multi-scale computational approach that combines the best features of continuum-based techniques and microscale models will be developed to simulate the soil-fluid-structure system that represents a levee in a general way. The objective of the computational work is to capture, with minimal empirical tuning, the effects of surface waves and deformation of the floodwall, the possible separation between of the floodwall and from the soil as floodwater rises and the impact of such separation on the distribution of water pressure surrounding the wall as well as possible occurrence of piping and scour in the soil media in the neighborhood of the floodwall. The project requires a student with a strong background in programming (preferably using C++) and is familiar with computational modeling tools such the finite element method, DEM, and CFD.
Experimental Component (Prof. Krueger): The novel experimental program will quantitatively investigate the interaction between a fluid and embedded particles in shear and unsteady flows. Using transparent particles embedded in a matched-index-of-refraction fluid, the combined motion of the fluid and densely-packed particles will, for the first time, be measured using a combination of digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) and direct imaging of the embedded particles. The experimental results will serve to construct a model for the lift force on particles – which is necessary for accurate simulations of scour and erosion. Additionally, experiments of simplified model levee systems will be used to validate the computational method. Prior experience with DPIV is not a requirement for this project, but experience with DPIV and image processing will be evaluated positively. Interested students must have some computer programming experience, preferably in Matlab.
The GRA positions will be for 2.5 years, beginning fall of 2010. The positions include a tuition waiver and a monthly stipend of $1650. Students who have completed a Masters degree are preferred, but exceptional students who have completed a Bachelors degree and have experience related to the research will also be considered. Commensurate with the expectations of a PhD degree, the students will be expected to work as a teaching assistant in departmental laboratory courses for two semesters during the research project to assist in the development of teaching and communication skills. Candidates interested in either component should send a detailed résumé and one-page statement of interest to the appropriate supervisor. To meet deadlines for the fall semester, candidates should send information as soon as possible. The contact information for the project supervisors is given below:

PhD position in Historical geology and Palaeontology, Marine phytoplankton evolution and climate change

at the Department of Earth Sciences. Starting date: 15 September 2010 or as agreed upon.
Unicellular phytoplankton form the base of the marine food chain and play fundamental roles in biogeochemical cycles on Earth. There is growing concern that climate change will disrupt algal productivity and calcification due to rising ocean temperatures and lowering of ocean pH (‘ocean acidification’). However, very little is known about the mechanisms and rates of climatic adaptation by phytoplankton.
The PhD student will participate in a project, which is a collaboration between Dr Jorijntje Henderiks (Uppsala University) and colleagues at the Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis (University of Oslo). We want to understand why different species within a prominent group of marine calcifying algae (the coccolithophores) respond differently to environmental change, and what environmental factor acts as the main influence on algal evolution. This research aims to bridge the gap between short-term experimental observations of living marine algae, and long-term patterns of phenotypic (i.e., size, shape) variability observed in the fossil record.
The PhD candidate will collect fossil time series data of phenotypic evolution in key lineages using geological samples from various ocean drilling sites. The microfossil data will be paired with reconstructions of past oceanographic and climatic change using geochemical proxy methods. The project offers training in cross-disciplinary research between the fields of geology and biology. Analytical techniques will include (automated) biometry and time series analysis. The fossil analyses will be integrated with parallel–running subprojects that focus on culture experiments and evolutionary modeling.
The applicant must have a university degree with a strong component of geology and/or biology, with keen interests in (micro)paleontology, marine geology/biology, evolutionary biology, and/or ecology. Experience in biometry and statistical methods as well as knowledge of marine microfossils/phytoplankton are welcomed. Good communication skills and ability to work in a team are essential.
The holder of a PhD-student position shall primarily devote her/his time to own research studies. Other departmental work, such as educational or administrative can be part of the position (max 20%).The applicant must be eligible for PhD studies. Priority is given to those who are deemed to show the greatest aptitude for a successful completion of graduate studies.
The rules governing this process can be found in Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen) 5 kap §§ 1-7. Local guidelines at Uppsala University determine the salary.
The application shall consist of CV, copies of exams and list of courses including the grades obtained, a copy of the Master thesis (or a draft thereof), as well as names of two persons that can be used as reference.
More information can be obtained from Dr. Jorijntje Henderiks, tel. +46-18-471 23 16, jorijntje.henderiks@geo.uu.se. Union representatives are Anders Grundström, Saco-rådet, tel +46-18-471 53 80, Carin Söderhäll, OFR-S/ST, tel +4618-471 19 96, Stefan Djurström, Seko, tel +46-18-471 33 15.
The application should be sent, preferrably by e-mail to: registrator@uu.se, or by fax +46-18-471 20 00, or by mail to: Registrator, Uppsala University, Box 256, 751 05 UPPSALA, Sweden. In any correspondence, please use the reference number UFV-PA 2010/966. Application deadline on 31 May, 2010.

    PhD Thesis in Geomicrobiology

The research group for Geomicrobiology at the Institute for Geosciences at the University of Tübingen is looking for a PhD student working for 3 years on
'Microbial and diagenetic origins of Fe minerals in Precambrian Banded Iron Formations'
Banded Iron Formations (BIFs) are Precambrian, sedimentary deposits consisting of iron minerals and silicates that were deposited during a time of major changes in Earth atmosphere and biosphere. Understanding the mechanisms of BIF deposition therefore allows a better understanding of the earliest evolution of life and geochemical conditions on our planet. The deposition of BIFs is traditionally explained by a chemical oxidation of Fe(II) by cyanobacterial O2 and precipitation of Fe(III) minerals. However, there is increasing evidence that for the formation of the oldest BIFs, O2-independent mechanisms are necessary and that photoautotrophic Fe(II)-oxidizing bacteria could have fulfilled this function. As a consequence, Fe minerals in association with cell organic matter would be deposited at the seafloor.
The long term diagenetic fate of such cell-mineral aggregates is unknown and is will be the primary question of the PhD candidate. Our approach involves cultivation of Fe(II)-oxidizing bacteria in the presence of high silicate concentrations simulating Precambrian oceans. The precipitates will be treated in high-pressure autoclaves and the mineralogy and trace metal distribution will be analyzed and compared to BIF samples collected in South Africa and Canada. The project will also quantify the partition coefficients for biologically essential trace elements in BIF minerals. The goals of the project are i) to elucidate the primary or diagenetic origin of BIF mineral assemblages based on experimentally-constrained textures and associations of diagenetic minerals and ii) to constrain biological activity at the time of BIF deposition by determining the trace metal concentration and distribution in Precambrian seawater and BIFs.
The candidate will work in collaboration with researchers from Canada and the US and will have the opportunity to present her/his results in international journals and at international conferences.
We are offering a PhD position in an interdisciplinary, international, young and dynamic team of microbiologists, geochemists and geoscientists. This position provides an opportunity for the candidate to work at where various fields of science converge, to be creative, and to challenge themselves. Ideal candidates have a solid background in geochemistry and/or geosciences and are interested in geomicrobiology. Applicants must have the ability to work in a team, have good management and communication skills and should be highly motivated and committed to pursuing interdisciplinary research. Good computer and language skills (English) are necessary.
The start date can be July 1st or as soon as possible thereafter. The employment (TVL E13, 50%) will be arranged by the administration of the University of Tübingen. Disabled persons will be preferred in case of equal qualification
Applications should be sent by email before May 30th to: Prof. Dr. Andreas Kappler, Geomicrobiology group, Center for Applied Geosciences, University of Tübingen Sigwartstrasse 10, D-72076 Tübingen, Germany, Phone: ++49-7071-2974992 Email: andreas.kappler@uni-tuebingen.de
