PhD position in Mediterranean agro-ecosystems modelling

    Aix-en-Provence, France

3-yr PhD studentship, starting autumn 2012: Modelling the biogeochemical functioning of Mediterranean agro-ecosystems for assessment of their ecosystem services. Assessment of sustainability criteria for the future of Mediterranean agriculture under global change scenarios.
The work of this PhD is embedded into the scientific programme of the new Laboratory of Excellence OT-Med: "Objectif Terre - Bassin Méditerranéen" ("Destination Earth - Mediterranean Basin") that associates several academic institutions of the Aix-Marseille region (southeast of France) in the area of geosciences/life sciences, humanities and social sciences. The interdisciplinary project of OT-Med focusses on the environment and sustainable development of Mediterranean and semi-arid environments.
The first task of the PhD student will be the adaptation of an existing generic large-scale agro-ecosystems model that simulates the coupled carbon and water cycle of several potential natural and cultivated/managed plant functional types. For agricultural systems around the Mediterranean, it is necessary to enhance the model for:

    • additional permanent cropping systems (olive-trees, vineyards, orchards).
    • associated cropping systems (low-input systems, agroforestry). These diverse systems are either traditionally present around the Mediterranean or they are tested as innovative systems for potentially more sustainable agriculture (soil conservation, carbon sequestration, reduced external inputs, improved resilience against climatic stress, etc).

In a second task, the PhD student will perform spatial simulations with the model around the Mediterranean to estimate several ecosystem services directly depending on the management of agro-ecosystems. Global change scenarios will be used for simulating likely future performances and impacts of Mediterranean agriculture, including the estimation of environmental, economic, and social services for sustainable agriculture.
The PhD work will benefit from co-supervision at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK, Potsdam, Germany) and the department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science at the University of Lund (Sweden) where the model was initially developed and where it is further developed and used within several projects.
For testing the implementation of specific Mediterranean traditional or innovative cropping systems within the agro-ecosystem model, and for analysing their ecological and socio-economic impacts, the PhD candidate will collaborate with several institutes in Europe, and in the South Mediterranean (especially Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, and Lebanon).
The candidate should have training in geosciences or life sciences (environmental science, biology, agronomy, geo-ecology) with appropriate knowledge of computing tools (programming language, GIS, statistical and graphic software, etc). The candidate must be interested in interdisciplinary questions, linking social and development issues to ecology in the rural Mediterranean.
Applications (CV, motivation letter, names of 2 referees) should be sent to alberte.bondeau@imbe.fr before June 10, 2012

    PhD Thesis in Geomicrobiology

The research group for Geomicrobiology at the Institute for Geosciences at the University of Tübingen is looking for a PhD student who will work for 3 years on:
'Abundance, activity and interrelation of phototrophic and chemotrophic microbial iron(II)
    oxidation in freshwater sediments'

Iron represents one of the most abundant elements in the Earth's crust and is an important nutrient for almost all living organisms in various aqueous and terrestrial environments. Certain bacteria have developed a metabolism that is based on the use of ferrous iron (iron(II) oxidation) which leads to precipitation of Fe(III)biominerals. Bacteria either use chemical or light energy to drive iron(II) oxidation, which forces these organisms to inhabit microniches that provide well defined chemical and physical properties. Althoughthese bacteria were discovered almost 200 years ago, the exact mechanism of microbial iron(II) oxidation, their interrelation amongst each other and their local distribution patterns still remain unknown. The advertised PhD position offers a possibility to shed more light into this microbial Fe(II) oxidation process, especially with respect to the competition between phototrophic and chemotrophic iron oxidation in freshwater sediments for Fe(II) and the link between the iron and nitrogen cycle. Applied methods will include geochemical analyses, microbial cultivation and molecular biology techniques.
We are offering a PhD position in an interdisciplinary, international, young and dynamic team of microbiologists, geochemists and geoscientists. This position provides an opportunity for the candidate to be creative, and to work on a challenging topic which combines various fields within environmental sciences. Ideal candidates should have a solid background in geochemistry/environmental sciences, environmental microbiology and/or microbial ecology and are interested in geomicrobiology. Applicants must have the ability to work in a team, have good management and communication skills and should be highly motivated and committed to pursuing interdisciplinary research. Good computer and language skills (English) are necessary. The candidate will have the opportunity to participate in field work and present his/her results in international journals and conferences.
The starting date is September 1st or as soon as possible thereafter. The employment (TVL E13, 50%) will be arranged by the administration of the University of Tübingen. Disabled persons will be preferred in case of equal qualification.
Applications should be sent by email before June 30th to: Prof. Dr. Andreas Kappler, Geomicrobiology group, Center for Applied Geosciences, University of Tübingen Sigwartstrasse 10, D-72076 Tübingen, Germany, Phone: ++49-7071-2974992 Email: andreas.kappler@uni-tuebingen.de
More information including recent publications on the advertised PhD topic can be found on our website:http://www.geo.uni-tuebingen.de/arbe...obiologie.html

Within the Leibniz Association funded project LandScales (Connecting processes and structures driving the Landscape carbon dynamics over Scales) focusing on Carbon relations of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems at the landscape level , the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) in Müncheberg and the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries in Berlin invites applications for
3 PhD positions on the carbon cycle in aquatic-terrestrial interfaces,
Linking aquatic-terrestrial interfaces through biogeochemistry, remote sensing and limnology .

Background: Carbon (C) sequestration and release from terrestrial and freshwater aquatic ecosystems are important factors that can either mitigate or increase green house gas emission. Terrestrial and aquatic C dynamics are intimately linked to each other due to not only the transfer of C between systems but also to temporal and spatial changes and dynamics of the aquatic-terrestrial border zones, which are likely hotspots for landscape C balance. Consequently, there is a great challenge in amalgamating assessments of terrestrial and aquatic C cycles; thus, the project LandScales will focus substantially on the advancement of whole landscape C cycling research.
    Positions:
1 PhD position focusing on the assessment of the mechanisms regulating the C balance across scales, applying isotope biogeochemistry techniques ( Reference No. WP1 ). Priming in aquatic and terrestrial systems and their interfaces will be assessed in laboratory and field experiments. Experience in stable isotope techniques (labelling, natural abundance) would be a merit. Further information: Dr. Zachary Kayper (kayler @zalf.de).
1 PhD position focusing on the impacts of aquatic ecosystem structure on heterogeneity in C fluxes across scales ( Reference No. WP3 ). Impact of aquatic primary production and patterns at the landscape scale of CO 2 sequestration and release will be identified using in situ measurements in kettle holes and non-invasive methods, especially multi-temporal remote sensing with unmanned aerial vehicles. Experience in limnology and remote sensing would be a merit. Further information: Dr. Sabine Hilt ( hilt@igb-berlin.de ).
1 PhD position focusing on the uncertainties in scaling fluxes and mechanisms to the landscape level (Reference No. WP4 ). Hotspots of C turnover will be identified and classified with respect to the complexity of interacting processes. Innovative approaches of time series analysis and nonlinear statistics will be used for quantifying and minimizing the uncertainty of any upscaling to landscape level by adjusting monitoring schemes and optimizing the structure of process-based models. A good mathematical background is a prerequisite. Further information: Prof. Gunnar Lischeid (lischeid@zalf.de).
We are seeking highly qualified scientists who are also highly motivated and enjoy interdisciplinary work. In addition to the specific requirements stated above, the candidates need a master of science (or an equivalent qualification) in the following or comparable disciplines: biology, environmental sciences, limnology, aquatic biology, ecology, biogeochemistry, agricultural sciences, mathematics, or geography. For the successful realisation of the project, flexibility, autonomy, communication skills, and teamwork are required.
We offer an exciting interdisciplinary project at the interface of aquatic and terrestrial biogeochemistry within a young and dynamic team without classical hierarchies. The positions are fixed-term and limited to 3 years. Start of the project will be 1 st July. Salary is paid according to 13 TV-L (ZALF) and TVöD (IGB) (50% positions). In keeping with the ZALF and IGB's policy regarding gender equity, female applicants are particularly encouraged. Disabled people with identical qualifications will be favoured. For further other information please contact Dr. Katrin Premke(premke@igb-berlin.de), or go to the following website: www.landscales.de .
Send your application as a single pdf-file with the position reference number and include your motivation, CV, description of past research accomplishments, and information for 2 professional references (name, postal and email address) by the 31 May 2012 via email to:
    Dr. Katrin Premke

Ph.D. position in Evolutionary Ecology, at Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology

Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is a Swiss-based and internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH domain (Swiss Federal Institute of Science and Technology). It is committed to the ecologically, economically and socially responsible management of water resources and aquatic ecosystems.

TheDepartment of Aquatic Ecology seeks to recruit a

    PhD student in Evolutionary Ecology
The PhD student will be funded by a Swiss National Science Foundation grant, entitled "Interactive effects of environmental change and host-parasite co-evolution on the ecological speciation of sticklebacks”.
The aim of the project is to understand how environmental change affects the ecological and evolutionary processes that create and maintain biodiversity. The eutrophication of lakes can affect selection pressures by changing environmental heterogeneity and the composition of communities. In this project we will focus on how such human-mediated environmental changes can influence the co-evolutionary interactions between sticklebacks and their parasites, and, as a consequence, affect the functioning of ecosystems. The work will shed light on how natural and sexual selection are mediated by environmental conditions and species interactions, and how these processes can affect niche variation and diversification.
We are looking for a self-directed and motivated student with a broad interest in ecology, evolution, and/or ecosystem science. Ideally, the student will be interested in fieldwork, large-scale mesocosm experiments, genetics/genomics, and eco-evolutionary dynamics.
Eawag is an international research institute, and is closely affiliated with top universities that grant PhD degrees, such as ETH-Zurich. The working language of the department is English. We offer a stimulating research environment in the Aquatic Ecology department, which has locations in Dübendorf (near Zurich) and Kastanienbaum (near Lucerne). Located on the shores of Lake Lucerne, Eawag’s Center for Ecology, Evolution & Biogeochemistry (CEEB) is a strong nucleus of Eawag research groups aimed at integrating evolutionary biology, community ecology, and ecosystem science (http://www.eawag.ch/forschung/cc/ceeb/index_EN ). At both locations, the student will interact with a diverse range of researchers studying community ecology, evolutionary biology, ecological genetics, ecosystem science, and applied environmental science. The project will also involve collaborations between researchers at Eawag (e.g. Ole Seehausen, Jukka Jokela) and the Department of Evolutionary Ecology (http://www.ifm-geomar.de/index.php?id=home) in Germany (Dr. Christophe Eizaguirre: http://www.ifm-geomar.de/index.php?id=ceizaguirre ).
The starting date for the PhD student is flexible, but the ideal start date is in Sept 2012. The PhD program at ETH-Zurich generally lasts three years. Applications should include a cover letter, a curriculum vita, and three references. Copies of prior publications or theses will also be considered if made available via PDF.
    For further information:
    please visit Eawag’s website (http://www.eawag.ch)
