Department of Geography and Geology
Nordic Center for Earth Evolution (NordCEE)
Ph.D. position in Modelling the evolution of Earth’s atmosphere and biogeochemical cycles
A full funded Ph.D. position is available at the Nordic Center for Earth Evolution (NordCEE), Department of Geography and Geology, University of Copenhagen, Denmark.
We seek a highly motivated geoscientist interested in modelling Earth oxygenation – using and linking models of different complexity (3D ocean circulation, atmospheric chemistry and simple box models). In particular we are interested in building on our recent results published in Nature and PNAS in trying to understand the oxygenation of the oceans and atmosphere. Experience in modelling geochemistry, ocean circulation and/or atmospheric chemistry is an advantage. The position involves collaboration with NordCEE members Don Canfield (U. of Southern Denmark) and Minik Rosing (U. of Copenhagen).
NordCEE is a center of excellence funded by The Danish National Research Foundation. NordCEE is focused on exploring the geobiology of life’s evolution on Earth. We investigate how biological evolution has both shaped and responded to the evolving chemistry of the Earth-surface environment (www.nordcee.dk). Our goal is to untangle the dynamics between biological evolution, element cycling, and Earth-surface change. NordCEE currently has a large international staff and 15 Post doc and PhD’s
Qualifications
The successful candidate should be creative, innovative and ideally should have experience in numerical modelling in geoscience and an understanding Earth’s evolution interms of geochemistry, ocean circulation and/or biogeochemical dynamics. Good English skills are required. Candidates from a non-European or non-English speaking country are recommended to supply a certified copy of TOEFL-test or equivalent, and a GRE general test. We expect that the candidate will publish in international peer-reviewed journals, write a Ph. D. thesis within the project duration of three years and assist in teaching within the Department. The scholarship is open for two alternative Ph.D. arrangements:
A regular 3-year program; here the candidate must hold a M.Sc. degree,
A special 4-year program; here the candidate must hold a B.Sc. degree and have completed one year of the M.Sc. program (equivalent to 60 ECTS).
Terms of employment
In the regular 3-year program, the successful Ph.D. candidate will be offered a full-time Ph.D. position for a period of three years, contingent on a satisfactory performance, with the specific intent that it results in a Ph.D. degree and scientific publications. In the 4-year program, the successful Ph.D. candidate will be paid in accordance with the Danish State Education Grant and Loan Scheme Authority Order for the first two years until awarded a M. Sc. and as a full-time Ph.D. for the remaining two years.
The salary depends on seniority, as agreed between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations, and is within the range of 23,000-30,000 DKK/month (approximately 3,100-4,000 Euro/month) in the 3-year program and 10,000-12,000 DKK/month for the first two years of the 4-year program.
Further information can be obtained from Associate Professor Christian Bjerrum, (e-mail: cjb@geo.ku.dk). General information on the Department of Geography and Geology can be found at www.geo.ku.dk. and the PhD school athttp://www.science.ku.dk/phd/.
