Master thesis Virus inactivation by solar disinfection (SODIS)
Among the global population, 11 % (or 780 million people) remain without access to an improved source of drinking water.1 These people live with an high risk of contracting waterborne diseases; consequently 1.8 million people die each year of diarrhoea, 90 % of which are children under the age of five.2 To tackle this health burden, so-called point-of-use water treatment methods are increasingly being promoted to disinfect drinking water at a household level. Solar water disinfection (SODIS) is a popular and fairly well-established point-of-use method. It requires only sunlight and PET bottles and is therefore a cheap and simple to operate. SODIS is currently providing clean improved drinking water to over 2 million users in over thirty countries around the globe.
Despite its popularity, the efficiency of SODIS to disinfect waterborne microorganisms is not entirely understood. To date, most studies have focused on waterborne bacteria, for which 6 hours of sunlight exposure was found to achieve good results. However, much less is known about the effect of SODIS on waterborne viruses, which also play an important role in waterborne disease. Initial results show that SODIS is less effective for viruses than bacteria, but comprehensive studies on the disinfection of viruses by SODIS are lacking.
This master thesis aims to fill this important knowledge gap. The overall goal of this project is to establish a database for virus disinfection by SODIS, and to determine the fundamental mechanisms by which SODIS inactivates viruses. We will work in clean laboratory systems, as well as in environmental settings: jointly with collaborators from Eawag, we will test SODIS in different bottle types and in actual water samples obtained from areas where SODIS is used. This study will give new insights in SODIS applicability for virus disinfection and will be of great interest for further improvements of SODIS ,hence, for both implementers and users.
The student will be introduced to many experimental techniques including culturing and enumeration of human viruses as well as chemical analytics such as high-performance liquid chromatography and fluorescence spectroscopy. The project will be supervised by LCE at EPFL (Michael J. Mattle and Prof. Tamar Kohn). SODIS know-how and water samples will be provided by the SODIS team from EAWAG/Helvetas (Regula Meierhofer and Samuel Luzi). For further interest and application, please contact: tamar.kohn@epfl.ch or regula.meierhofer@eawag.ch
Pre-requisites: Interest/basic knowledge in water chemistry and laboratory work

PhD Position - Environmental Assessment of Use of
    Geothermal Energy and Georesources

The Chair of Engineering Geology at ETH Zurich invites applications for a PhD position in the area of environmental assessment of geothermal energy production and use of georesources. The successful candidate must have an MSc in earth sciences, environmental sciences, or related field.

This position is part of a collaborative project on geothermal energy in Switzerland. The duration of the position is approximately 3 years and can be filled by the successful candidate in the beginning of 2013.

The goal of this research project is to elaborate a novel life cycle assessment (LCA) procedure for geothermal energy and georesources use. LCA is the standard framework for concerted evaluation and comparison of multiple environmental consequences. In each phase of LCA, the definition of the functional unit, life cycle inventory (LCI) and life cycle impact assessment (LCIA), we want to improve existing concepts. This involves substantial work on information research from multiple sources, statistical analysis and validation. We will adopt a prospective and geoscientific view, compare alternative methods, and discuss the expressiveness of available impact categories. We will enhance standard approaches, by incorporating prediction by geological models, and expect results will be applicable for selected case studies, as well as the development of generally valid procedures.

The ideal candidate should have knowledge and experience in geological and life cycle assessment methods. He/she should be a team player, have good communication skills and take on responsibility in an international and interdisciplinary research team. The Engineering Geology group consists of approximately 20 scientists involved in a leading research and teaching program in engineering geology, geothermics and hydrogeology. Detailed information about the Chair of Engineering Geology is available on the web: www.engineering-geology.ethz.ch. For further information regarding the advertised position please contact Dr. Peter Bayer, Department of Earth Sciences, ETH Zurich (e-mail: bayer@erdw.ethz.ch).

Complete applications should be sent by regular mail or e-mail to Dr. Peter Bayer, Engineering Geology, ETH Zürich, Sonneggstrasse 5, 8092 Zurich, Switzerland, and must include the following, ideally in one pdf-file: 1) A short cover letter where you outline your motivation; 2) Curriculum vitae which describes your complete personal details and career history; 3) Complete course grades and transcripts; 4) Contact details of two referees or written reference letters. We will start with the invitation of potential candidates in December 2012 and plan to fill the position in February. However, later applications may also be considered until this position is filled.

Post-doc and Funded PhD in Air-Sea Exchange

Post-doc: Characterising a New Gas Analyser for Eddy Covariance Measurements of Air-Sea Fluxes of Carbon Dioxide

Accurate measurements of atmosphere-ocean fluxes are important for quantifying the amount of greenhouse gases that are transferred across the air-sea interface. The eddy correlation (direct) method is considered to be the benchmark for accurate determination of air-sea fluxes. This method relies on high-frequency measurements of the fluctuations of vertical wind velocity (w') and gas concentration (c'). Current gas analyser technology places constraints on the ability to determine c' with the required signal-to-noise ratio, and measurements are limited to conditions of high air-sea fluxes.
The main objective of this project is to characterise a newly-developed photoacoustic gas analyser and implement it within an eddy-covariance system. This technology will provide a significant improvement in sensitivity over the IR absorption sensors that are currently in oceanographic use, and there is a very stong potential for reducing the scatter in the air-sea gas transfer coefficient.
Post-doctoral candidates should have completed a PhD in oceanography, atmospheric science, or a related field with a proven research record and evidence of high research potential. Familiarity with the eddy covariance flux method is exceedingly desirable. Experience with instrumentation is essential. Enthusiam for participation in ocean-going field experiments is necessary.
An annual salary of €38,286 is offered for an initial period of 12 months, with the possibility of a further extension. For more information, contact Dr. Brian Ward bward@nuigalway.ie.
Funded PhD Fellowship: Turbulence Measurements at the Ocean Surface for the SPURS Ocean Salinity Experiment

This project addresses the following question: What is the vertical distribution of small-scale temperature, salinity, dissipation, and velocity in the upper 100 m of the ocean, and how do these processes contribute to the North Atlantic Salinity Maximum?
The primary focus of this project is to study the small-scale processes at the ocean surface to quantify their impact on sea surface salinity using data from the Air-Sea Interaction Profiler (ASIP). ASIP is upwardly-rising profiler that has a suite of high-resolution sensors that can provide measurements from mixed-layer depths to the air-sea interface, including temperature, salinity, shear, velocity, and PAR. The shear measurements provide the level of turbulence, which is quantified by the dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy. This dissipation and temperature/salinity profiles are essential to determining the vertical turbulent fluxes of salt and temperature in a stratified system, which is the main mechanism of transport of these scalars. Because of the high spatial resolution of the salinity profiles, the sea surface salinity can be determined exactly and related to the bulk salinity and the turbulent fluxes.
Applicants should have a degree in physics, engineering, or a closely-related discipline, and a strong motivation for research. Familiarity with ocean turbulence is desirable but not essential. Experience with Matlab is essential. Enthusiam for participation in ocean-going field experiments is necessary. For further information, contact Dr. Brian Ward bward@nuigalway.ie.
Applications for both positions should be send to (curriculum vitae, motivation letter, references, research statement) should be sent by e-mail to Dr. Brian Ward: bward@nuigalway.ie
