    Food Process Engineering
    Supervisor: Dr. Alex Martynenko, Department of Engineering, Faculty of Agriculture,

    Project: The objective of the project is the development of new energy-efficient and
    quality-saving drying technology. This project is a part of the integrated and
    interdisciplinary research program to improve the quality of food processing. The
    successful graduate student will quantify physical, chemical and textural attributes of
    food before and after processing, shelf-life and quality degradation. Successful
    candidate will be working closely with local food processing industry.
    Qualifications: Applicants must have experience in food dewatering (drying), computer
    programming and/or imaging. Undergraduate with a minimum GPA 3.5 or graduate
    degree in engineering or science is required. Knowledge of food science and
    technology, value-added food processing, fruit biochemistry and/or food analysis would
    be a strong asset. Strong written and oral communication skills are important.
    Stipend: $17,500 per year for two years. Qualified individual will also have the
    opportunity to apply for an NSERC-IPS (http://www.nserc.gc.ca) postgraduate
    fellowship.
    Start Date: May 1, 2013 (could be extended for suitable international candidates).

    University of Georgia: The University of Georgia (http://www.uga.edu), founded in 1785, is a land grant/sea grant institution comprised of 16 schools and colleges. Enrollment includes approximately 34,800 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The Daniel B. Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, founded in 1905, is a professional school with 57 faculty, 300 undergraduates, and 200 graduate students. The School offers Bachelor of Science, Master of Forest Resources, Master of Natural Resources, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Majors in the School include forestry, fisheries and wildlife, natural resources recreation and tourism, and water and soil resources. The School has a 740-acre forest less than 10 minutes from campus and 23,000 acres of forestland across the state for teaching and research. An assistantship is available for a master’s level graduate student in the area of Forest Products and Wood Quality. The 12 month assistantship is available immediately and will remain open until filled. Several projects are available for consideration including assessing the impact of intensive management on the physical and mechanical properties of loblolly pine, modeling the impact of intensive management on wood quality, development on new instruments to rapidly assess wood properties, and linking wood properties to product properties.     Salary:

    Qualifications:

    This three year studentship is sponsored by the AgResearch Core funded programme Food Provenance and Assurance and includes an annual tax-free stipend, tuition fees and consumables. The research will be undertaken within the Dairy Foods and Food Assurance and Meat Quality teams based at Ruakura Campus in Hamilton. The PhD candidate will be enrolled at Auckland University and have supervisors from both the Auckland University and the AgReserach teams. During the term of the PhD study the student will need to relocate to Palmerston North with the Ruakura teams. There will be at least 6 months notice of relocation and support to do so.

    The ideal candidate must have
    A relevant Masters or Honours degree (e.g. chemistry, food technology)

    Diligence, resilience and enthusiasm.

    PhD student - extending meat shelf life - AgResearch

    Applications are invited for a PhD Studentship which has been established to investigate the influence of cell-cell signalling on the interactions of spoilage bacteria on meat. The outcome of the study will be the identification of quenching molecules for incorporation into active packaging to significantly reduce the outgrowth of these bacteria.
    This three year studentship is sponsored by the New Zealand Meat Industry Association Innovation Limited and includes an annual tax-free stipend, tuition fees and consumables. The research will be undertaken within the Food Assurance and Meat Quality team based at the Hopkirk Research Institute, at Massey University in Palmerston North, New Zealand. The PhD candidate will be enrolled at Massey University, and have supervisors from both the Massey University and the Food Assurance team as well as the opportunity to work with representatives of New Zealand's meat processing industry.

    The ideal candidate must have
    A relevant Masters or Honours degree (e.g. microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry)
    Excellent written and oral communication skills (IELTS score of 6.5 required if English is not first language)
    Strong analytical and problem solving skills
    Diligence, resilience and enthusiasm.
    Previous experience working in a microbiology and/or molecular biology laboratory would be advantageous.
