    Research TopicThe PhD student will conduct research on how to improve the performance of machine translation when it is used in an information retrieval or a multi-modal interaction (via video/speech) use case.This post is within the "Platform Theme B: Understanding Global Content" of the SFI-funded ADAPT centre at Dublin City University. This theme focuses on achieving translation of targeted quality, handling different levels of noise when spanning language pairs and domains and optimally leveraging human quality judgements.

    RequirementsThe successful candidate will have an excellent academic record (first class or II.1 primary degree or a postgraduate qualification, e.g. M.Sc.) in Computer Science or a related discipline. They will have a good knowledge of machine learning and statistics, with a background in Natural Language Processing being a distinct advantage. They will be highly motivated, with strong written and oral communication skills and a demonstrated proficiency in software development, with strong design and programming skills. They must be eager to work in and learn from multi-disciplinary and multi-organisation teams.     Research Topic
    This Ph.D will investigate the integration of speech recognition with multimodal features including textual and visual modalities for improved indexing of spoken and multimodal content. This will further analyse how affective interpretation of spoken or visual content can be utilised to improve recognition or annotation of multimodal content.
    This post is within the "Platform Theme A: Understanding Global Content" of the SFI-funded ADAPT centre at Dublin City University. This theme is seeking to develop robust, domain-agnostic, linguistic analysers, which can be applied to any language and which are informed by cues from non-linguistic sources.

    Research Topic
    This Ph.D. will focus on the development of techniques to select and transform content for delivery in a mode or modes most appropriate to the user’s current context. For example selection and transformation of textual content to audio or visual representation. While this research will focus on algorithms for content selection and transformation, it will work with other researchers in this theme to exploit inputs signals and outputs methods developed within in other projects.
