After more than a decade of pre-clinical research on small- and large animal models, the Brännström group obtained enough skills and scientific evidence to receive ethical permission to evaluate uterus transplantation (UTx) as a mean to potentially cure absolute uterine factor infertility (AUFI). Using live donors, nine women received a transplanted uterus that replaced a missing uterus from birth, or after a hysterectomy (as a consequent of cervical cancer treatment). Up until today, five healthy babies have been born and with further ongoing pregnancies. These successful outcomes demonstrated that UTx offers a curative treatment for infertility caused by AUFI
Allograft tissue is generally used for human transplantation procedures, including in a UTx setting. This involves risky donor surgery, and all transplanted patients face the risks of tissue rejection and immunosuppressant-related side effects. The development of an alternative donor source, for example through the progress of a tissue engineered grafting material based on the patient’s own cells to reduce rejection complications and risky donor surgery would greatly benefit the transplantation field, including for UTx patients
For these reasons, we advertise this PhD position which will involve developing novel tissue engineering solutions for novel female infertility treatment applications, in particular using decellularized materials. The work will involve animal studies (rodents and sheep), cell culturing (including various stem cells), molecular- and protein based assays. The project is a continuation on our work published 2014 and 2016 (Hellström and Brännström) and the applicants are encouraged to read these two publications in detail prior to their application for this position.
The PhD position comprises 4 years full-time studies and leads to a doctoral degree. The position is funded via doctoral studentship
Eligibility
To be admitted to third-cycle studies you must fulfill both the general and the specific entry requirements. The general entry requirements is fulfilled if you have:
1. completed a degree at a second-cycle level, or
2. completed at least 240 credits worth of studies of which at least 60 credits must be at a second-cycle level, or
3. acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
The specific entry requirements is fulfilled if you have completed the English B/6 course or is considered to have acquired equivalent knowledge through previous studies
Assessment
Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for education on a doctoral level are given in SFS 1998:80
In selecting between applicants who meet the general and specific entry requirements, their ability to benefit from third-cycle studies shall be taken into account. The assessment shall attach particular importance to documented qualifications for:
- specific knowledge and skills within the subject area and related research fields
- experience of scientific theory and relevant research methodology
- scientific analysis and presentation verified through thesis, degree project, scientific journals or the like
