The Electrical Energy and Power Systems Group of the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of The University of Manchester, UK is looking for a Research Associate to work on a research project funded by the EU H2020 project "Massive integration of power electronic devices (MIGRATE).


This multi-partner, multi-million euros, research project will develop and validate innovative, technology-based solutions in view of managing the pan-European electricity system experiencing a proliferation of power electronic devices to connect generation and consumption sites. This overarching goal can be re-expressed in two complementary goals when considering the time horizon, i.e. to better understand how a large penetration of PE will impact the transmission system behaviour and to propose innovative solutions to manage the-pan European electricity system; in the short to medium term, how to operate the existing system configuration with a growing penetration of PE-connected generation and consumption, based on novel methods and tools; in the long term, how to make possible the transition toward a system where all generation and consumption is connected via 100% PE, based on innovative control algorithms together with new grid connection standards. Within the MIGRATE project the particular focus of this position will be on development of a simulation platform to study and improve power quality (PQ), harmonics in particular, in power-electronic (PE) rich power networks of the future, ensuring secure operation of the network and appropriate quality of supply to network users. Harmonic performance improvement will be achieved by appropriate control of PE-based devices, which will become a part of the solution and not only the problem. The simulation platform will enable to evaluate the harmonic levels in future PE-rich power networks and to analyse cost-effective mitigation options, which will help maintaining the required harmonics level. In these mitigation options, PE-based devices are seen as an essential part of the solution for attaining and maintaining the required harmonic levels, while continuing to fulfil their functions in the power system.
